Ranagri sound like a precious, unspoiled spot of beauty – the Irish village of Ranagri that gave the band its name. The four Londoners marry musical influences ranging from classical, folk and blues. If their story did not exist, it would have to be invented. A get-together in the pub – a band’s story comes into being. Guitar and flutes, harp and bodhran, bouzouki – and each time these melodious voices oscillating between melancholy and pure joie de vivre.

Stockfisch Records is lucky to present the Irish/English band “Ranagri” with singer-songwriter Donal Rogers.

Four London musicians; one traditional Irish player, two classically trained, and one blues singer and guitarist, all with a passion for folk music.

A meeting in a pub in Richmond and the story of ‘Ranagri the band’ begins. Donal Rogers (vocals and guitar), Eliza Marshall (flutes/ethnic whistles), Eleanor Turner (harp) and Joe Danks (bodhran, Guitars) are all very well established within the music industry. They have recorded and performed with many artists including Stevie Wonder, Radiohead, Peter Gabriel, Paloma Faith, Cara Dillon, Luke Daniels, Hans Zimmer, Ennio Morricone, James Horner, the list goes on. However, between them all lies one common thread – the desire to have their own band and play their own music.

Hi-Fi News

London-based Ranagri takes their name from an Irish village. Translated in the title of this album. They specialize in breaking away from the folk norm.

Since releasing this recording they’ve collaborated with Tony Christie to record an album of Irish standards, but here we have a rather more diverse set of songs. The infectious tone is aided by the use of unusual instruments, including electric harp and bouzouki alongside traditional whistles, bodhran and guitar, and the effortless-sounding harmonies of the four members of the band.

Tracks like ‘The Bogeyman’ and ‘The Rhythm Takes You Back’ will get the feet moving, while the band can also sound mystical and haunting on the likes of ‘Atlas’. The whole thing is beautifully recorded by Günter Pauler of Stockfisch Records, with a real ear for the tiniest detail of each instrument and, format concerns aside, sounds fine throughout.
