It was when Marlene was just beginning her career.
The album makes the point that our greatest recording artists have been steadfast throughout their careers about quality material, and about surrounding themselves with only the best players. This album will gladden the hearts of Marlene VerPlanck fans.
Originally issued on Savoy Records, the album is now being made available to listeners from Jazzology Records and the George H. Buck Foundation Jazz catalog. The album’s Original Mono Analog Tapes were used to create new DSD and DXD editions of the album by Rene Laflamme at 2xHD Mastering.
Backing Marlene VerPlanck is an amazing collection of musical talent including trumpeter Joe Wilder, flutist Herbie Mann, pianist Hank Jones, bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer Kenny Clarke, VerPlanck brings sincere emotion and a light swing to her renditions of ten ballads from the 1932-44 period.

This 1983 album is a reissue of Marlene Ver Planck’s first album.
A Savoy set with assistance from trumpeter Joe Wilder, flutist Herbie Mann, pianist Hank Jones, bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer Kenny Clarke.
