For our second album we have chosen to record Beethoven trios. Once again we had an adventure playing on gut strings, classical bows and the beautiful Salvatore Lagrassa, 1815 piano from the Edwin Beunk collection. As a musician one has individual timing, ones approach to colours, articulation and phrasing which are pretty personal. It could be akin to how one uses language to express oneself. The peculiar effect of using the historic instruments is how one suddenly has a new dialect in a language that one felt relatively at home in. This opens up new expressions and creates a different sound world, every nuance of emotion or thought that has been experienced becomes more rooted, there is more edge, so many small details are more vivid in colour and articulation which gives a very different picture of the whole. Its perhaps close to a restoration of a picture only much of what is restored happens to us! A recording is but a moment in time, hopefully capturing moments of inspiration.

The recording was originally digitized using the Hapi Merging converter at 256fs. The original session tracks were edited and rebalanced (which meant going through the mixer)  in the only available format for that purpose; the Pyramix 352.8KHz/24bit PCM (DXD). Prior to the advent of direct digital delivery, the next step in the production process from 352.8KHz/24bit PCM would be the DSD64 edited master for SACD production. What we have done now is also make a direct conversion to DSD128 and DSD256 from that original DXD edited master, without going through any interim processing steps.

Those DXD to DSD conversions are not up-samplings, as they would be going from one PCM sampling rate to another, for they are different encoding systems. PCM is a digital value sample based system, and DSD is a digital bit density modulated system. Conversion from any PCM sample rate to any DSD bit rate system is a remodulation, not an up-sampling.

We feel there is an audio advantage to this process in using the original files so we give you the choice and you can decide.

Thomas Gehrig

Die neue CD des Hamlet-Trios knüpft an die Qualität des Debüt-Albums an. (…)Musikalischer Fluss (…) gesamte dynamische Klangpalette

Klassieke Zaken (Aangenaam Klassiek)

Voor de liefhebbers van kamermuziek een aanwinst.

Diapason 5 out of 5

Les pittoresques Variations op. 121a complètent un programme unifié par les qualities imaginatives et esthètiques de cette excellente formation.

The Sunday Times

They make a wonderful complementary pair, especially as played so vividly by the period-instrument Hamlet Piano Trio.

Nederlands Dagblad

De waarde [van de vertolking] wordt nog verhoogd door de oude instrumenten. Daarmee wordt de klank die Beethoven zelf voor ogen had waarschijnlijk goed benaderd.

BBC Music Magazine 4 out of 5

These three refined musicians play Beethoven’s two Op. 70 trios with gut strings, classical bows and an 1835 piano – it’s an atmospheric mix. They capture the benevolent melancholy. ETA Hoffmann heard in the slow movement of the Ghost Trio (No. 5), and treat No. 6 with admirable poise.

Opus Klassiek
