Like in many other Eastern European countries, the 19th century saw an increase in the need for a stronger national and cultural identity in Hungary. It was in this period that Hungarian national music was born, for which the basic material was provided by the “bands” of gipsy musicians of the century. Based partly on verbunkos (19th century recruiting music in folklore style) and partly on gypsy music, this folklore was a source of inspiration for every European composer.
One of the most outstanding composers of the era, Franz Liszt was an Austrian-German cosmopolitan, but in his art and deeds he clearly declared himself Hungarian. He was also one of the fathers of Romantic thinking in music. In his symphonic poems depicting ideals, emotions, and images, musical themes are various musical characters derived from a single musical thought – with this practice he laid down one of the most important foundation stones of 19th century composition.
Les Préludes is and remains one of Liszt’s epochal works until today, casting, as its program suggests, the struggles of life and, in a Faustian sense, the conflicts of creative work into music. Another aspect why this work of Liszt’s is significant is that through the musical logic of the piece the simple musical thought makes an effortless, organic journey to apotheosis, one of the key ideas of Romanticism.
