Pianist and composer Douwe Eisenga writes sparkling music for sparkling minds, a hypnotic mix of rhythm and compelling lyricism. The melodies carve into the soul of the listener. After having made ten albums as a composer, For Mattia is the very first album on which he himself plays his music.
He composed, others performed his work. That is how it went for 30 years. “I used to play in pop bands. But when I started studying composition at the conservatory in Groningen, I ended up in a different world. There were dozens of people there who played much better than me. It seemed better to everyone that I should stick to compositions. I kept that idea up for a long time. ”
Now he has released this album with nine recent piano pieces, including For Mattia, in that characteristic, compelling Eisenga style that leaves virtually no one untouched. “But it is and remains important to keep a certain distance as a composer. The music does not dictate emotion, but has a certain openness. As a listener you can go into it yourself and make your own story out of it. That makes it more universal.”
Eisenga has “giant pride” now that For Mattia has been released. It’s actually my first album. This feels like a debut. That’s kind of crazy, at age 57. I hope it will end up with many people, not so much because of the sale, but because it is so nice to share the music. In addition to writing it, I get the most satisfaction when it lands well. The essence of a musician is that you want to be heard. ”

Review in the latest issue of Dutch magazine Music Emotion
It was completely quiet when we played For Mattia. The audience was clearly very moved by the performance and the subject of the album. And the mix, of course, it’s as though you’re sitting behind the piano yourself!
Eclectic, visual emotional music from someone who also writes for theater and film and who certainly knows how to fascinate in this short program. The edition is luxuriously sober.
For Mattia is a short piece was composed at the request of Katja Bosch and Janpeter Muilwijik. It’s a small piece for piano about a young woman.
Douwe thought that Mattia deserved the most beautiful music in the world. The premiere of the song took place two years ago in the Utrecht Cathedral, performed by pianist Karin de Boef.
For Mattia is lyrical minimalism, melodious, both hands close to each other in the medium register, weaving haunting curls, with beautiful flights in the treble. Casually, this bright and simple piece of construction builds a disturbing harmonic labyrinth, which I like not to find the exit, listening to it in a loop on a tangent of time. It is a magnificent homage, upsetting, vibrant at beyond all sadness, interpreted by Douwe Eisenga himself.
