The label's initial mission was to produce one live album at the Festival each season. The fourth album, however, featured Einojuhani Rautavaara's opera Thomas (ODE 704-2), raising major international attention and opening the ground for overseas distribution. Kiilunen, who was running the Festival's concert agency and had begun the recording activity part-time, soon decided to devote himself fully to the development of this new business, producing and editing the first 50 releases himself. It seemed somehow predetermined that Sibelius, left with- out a father at an early age, should take up the story of the archetypal orphan in the Kalevala, of a character who con- tinues to inspire Finnish music and art. Although Sibelius himself was nurtured tenderly by his mother and female relatives, he became fascinated with the tale of the rootless Kullervo when he was still at school in Ha?meenlinna. The first germs of setting this tale to music had thus been with the young composer for years, by the time when, while studying in Vienna in 1890–91, he began to re-read the Kalevala and to sketch a multi-movement symphony.

The premiere of Kullervo on April 28, 1892 immedi- ately established the work as the cornerstone of the Finn- ish sound in music, thanks to the originality and powerful impact of its music. This resignation had been preceded by a rushed departure from Salzburg after an infamous “kick in the butt” which Count Arco – the Archbishop’s chamberlain – had applied to the excessively free-spirited Mozart. Now, as Mozart saw it, “Clavierland” awaited: Vienna.

As in all big cities, the music scene in Vienna proved to be very versatile. On the one hand, there was the musical mainstream that served the up-to-date fashion. On the other hand, Vienna was full of amateur musicologists who devotedly indulged in exotic interests, which especially impressed and inspired Mozart. Salzburg, where everything followed the taste of Archbishop Colloredo, felt like the backwoods to the libertine Mozart.

Vienna was also full of wealthy patrons of music. In 1782, Mozart became well acquainted with one of them, Gottfried van Swieten, a diplomat who at that time was prefect of the library of the royal court in Vienna. In that position, he had access to numerous musical works of the Baroque era. In 1782 – a time in which all unnecessary grandiloquence and gaudiness in music was being rejected – this kind of music was regarded as highly old-fashioned. Nevertheless, van Swieten brought together a group of steadfast lovers of Baroque music. At their weekly Sunday ‘music meetings’ they listened to what was known as stile antico: music composed by Georg Friedrich Handel, Johann Sebastian Bach and other old masters of music – at the time an extremely exotic repertoire.

R. In the 1950s, his idiom began to acquire a sharper edge with his transition to a more Modernist style, including the adoption of twelve-tone technique. One of the first manifestations of this in his output was the orchestral work Modificata (1957). Moving on from dodecaphony and serialism, he sought a different approach in the 1960s and eventually ended up with a synthetic style that could be described as Neo-Romantic, the idiom of his late works. His percussion concerto Incantations (2008) and second cello concerto Towards the Horizon (2009) are fine examples of this period.

Alexander Scriabin’s creative career described a brilliant but tragic trajectory. He began as a pianistic prodigy in an elaborated Chopinesque style, as exemplified by his early Piano Concerto, sonatas and etudes. But his development was prodigious, and by the start of the 20th century he was capitalising with truly Russian fervour on the influence of Wagner – and the imaginative stimulus of the grandiose esoteric beliefs he was developing from Nietzsche and Theosophy – to create a personal language heady and erotically voluptuous in its chromatic freedom, extravagant and flamboyant in its gestures. This new language reached its apotheosis in the orchestral Poème de l’extase and Promethée and the heaven-storming Fifth, aloofly hermetic Sixth, and triumphant Seventh (White Mass) Piano Sonatas. These latter works, however, already show a trend towards concision (they are all in one movement) and to allusive but logical development out of germinal motifs and chordal structures – characteristics which Scriabin continued to explore and refine in the ever more inward, mystically self-communing piano works of his last years. In Scriabin, virtuosity is innate in the musical ideas themselves: it is the medium of communication with the divine, the portal to Nirvana.
