2xHD - Storyville

Named after the notorious New Orleans district where jazz was born, the label was launched in Copenhagen in 1952 by jazz fanatic Karl Emil Knudsen. Storyville originally sold imported American records but when the burgeoning post war jazz scene attracted the American jazz artists to tour in Europe and Scandinavia Knudsen seized every opportunity to record his jazz heroes for the label.

By late 2003 when Karl Emil Knudsen, the self-styled “Doctor of Jazz Archaeology”, passed away, his Storyville label was considered by the jazz cognoscenti to be the Scandinavian equivalent to America’s Blue Note Records. The Storyville archive includes recordings by Louis Armstrong, Ben Webster, Duke Ellington, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis and Benny Carter, to name but a few. Storyville Records was also instrumental in launching the career of some of the most influential Danish jazz artists including Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Fessor's Big City Band, and the legendary Papa Bues Viking Jazz Band.

In 2005 Editions Wilhelm Hansen, a Danish company with over 150 years in music publishing and part of the Music Sales Group acquired Storyville from Knudsen’s family. Anders Stefansen and Mona Granager, both long standing associates who worked with Knudsen to build the label, have stayed on with Storyville and will preserve the label’s unique identity.

As part of the Music Sales family of companies Storyville Records is ideally placed to bring its wealth of classic recordings to new generations of jazz fans through album re-releases, special collectors’ editions of rare jazz recordings and digital downloads. We are sure that Karl Emil would be delighted to know that his label lives on within a fiercely independent music company that shares the same passion for great music.

Storyville Records

Johnny Hodges featuring Ben Webster includes the superb November 1960 session recorded by the Ben Webster-Johnny Hodges Sextet in studio conditions at the Jazz Cellar, in San Francisco (without an audience). It is presented here in its complete form for the first time ever on tracks 1 thru 6.

These recordings are exceptional in that no other date exists in their collaborative discography featuring them as the only horns. The two great saxophonists were the only horn players heard at the session. They were backed by a rhythm section of piano, guitar, bass and drums.

A complete (and very rare) octet session featuring Johnny Hodges & His Orchestra from August 27, 1964, has been added as a bonus to this new DSD 256 Stereo release on tracks 7 thru 9.

Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges had already known each other for over 25 years by the time they recorded the present date together at The Jazz Cellar in San Francisco. The two sax giants recorded their first sides together as members of the illustrious Duke Ellington orchestra on August 19, 1935.

This album offers two jazz masters – masters of the saxophone – for the price of one. Ellingtonians both, John Cornelius Hodges and Benjamin Francis Webster were superbly lyrical and magnificently authoritative saxophonists whose extemporized compositions had a serenity and authority that are only to be found among the true elite of Jazz musicians.

Possessor of the most beautiful tone ever heard in Jazz, altoist Johnny Hodges formed his style early on and had little reason to change it through the decades. Hodges’ luscious playing on ballads has never been topped.

Hodges was best known for his solo work with Duke Ellington’s Orchestra where he played lead alto in the saxophone section for many years and his playing became one of the identifying voices of the Ellington orchestra. He is considered one of the definitive Alto Saxophone players of the big band era (alongside Benny Carter). His unchanging style always managed to sound fresh.

Please note that the booklet for this release contains a printing error regarding the instrumentation credits. Certainly one of the most important in recent years and yet one with which the American jazz public has had almost no opportunity of getting acquainted. It was formed with a special view to an engagement in Copenhagen, as no club in New York would, in 1963, be interested in sustaining a group like this during its formative period. Also, its first recordings were made during that stay in Copenhagen, as almost no American record companies could, in 1963, be persuaded to invest in music of this kind.
We are thus facing a situation unknown in the history of jazz up till now, a situation where important develop- ments take place outside of the United States. In par- ticular, the Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen seems to be out to becoming something like the Minton’s Play House of the ‘sixties. Ben had a long and distinguished career, of which his work with Duke was only a small part, but the crucial exposure just as he reached musical maturity was given by Ellington, and that maturity was hastened by the challenge of playing with Ellington. Before he joined for his longest stay (in January 1940), there had been no expectation of significant tenor contributions – despite Ben’s previous brief encounters in 1935 and 1936. But, in far less time than the 3 ½ years he remained, Ben had made the tenor an Ellingtonian voice almost as strong as Johnny Hodges and Harry Carney on alto and baritone. Since his arrival in New York in the Fifties, Hanna has acquitted himself with individuality and aplomb in contexts as disparate as the Benny Goodman big band and Charles Mingus’s experimental groups. While Hanna can make lovely solo flights and contribute meaningfully to bands, he also shares with such distinguished colleagues as Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan, and Barry Harris – to mention some fellow-Detroit emigres – a superb gift for providing even the most diverse artists with sympathetic accompaniment. Unlike his aforementioned colleagues, however, Hanna’s strongest musical antecedents are in the two-fisted “orchestral” tradition of his instrument. Jones, Flanagan and Harris have pared their solo styles to leave room for a bassist and drummer, but Hanna – though perfectly capable of fine work in such a setting – has such a finely-tuned sense of time and Rock- of-Gibraltar left hand that he is able to create without assistance performances of melodic, harmonic and rhythmic interest. Except for Duke Ellington’s Everything but You, all the tunes in this album are Roland Hanna originals and the fact that he is a composer of considerable talent is only icing on an already deli- cious cake. Sampling this particular slice of that cake, I am especially struck by Hanna’s ability to extract a full-ringing tone from his instrument at all tempi, and by the fact that he is capable of generating unflagging swing while creating the most lyrical mood. If you are a Roland Hanna fan, you probably know that he was knighted in 1970 by President William Tolber Tubman of Liberia, and it is therefore quite appropriate that at least two knightly virtues, Elegance and Grace, permeate Sir Roland’s music in this album.

[ill Farrar, (WBA1-FM, New York, March, 1980)]

Exclusively Available in Stereo DSD 64 & Stereo DSD 512 from NativeDSD Music

Tommy Flanagan was known for his tasteful, flawless, and swinging piano playing. Dexter loved being in Montmartre."

Dexter Gordon, Montmartre 1964 is one of the 2xHD Historic Series of vintage Monophonic recordings from the Storyville Records catalog. The album has been transferred from a Monophonic Analog Tape Recording to DSD 256 by Rene Laflamme. This new trio encounter combines three of the very best European jazz stars and makes for an album played with dramatic coherence - a seldom sight when three major personalities meet.

Playing with Fonnesbæk seems to give wings to Pieranunzi, the two men listen and talk to each other like two accomplices, who meet again after a long absence. Fonnesbæk enjoys this intuitive game, where they listen intensely to each other, propose another tempo or a new melody.

They can count on the rhythmic precision and great musicality of André Ceccarelli, one of Pieranunzi’s favorite drummers.

It is quite frankly evident that the trio enjoys the musical company of each other making ‘Something Tomorrow’ an important milestone in the career of a pianist, who never ceases to amaze us.

Enrico Pieranunzi, Piano
André Ceccarelli, Drums
Thomas Fonnesbaek, Double Bass
