Introduzione, written for alto flute, has a lengthy spinned out melodic line with repeatedly new preambles, changing from low to high and back again. The total scale of the alto flute is used for this. For the accompaniment the composer uses impressionistic sounding mixed chords that are introduced in a calm movement of brief sounds that are metrically arranged in groups of two and three cords. In that, the left hand intervenes with some antimetrical figures. In the second part, Capriccio, the composer swaps the melancholically alto flute for the clear sounding flute; an instrument more suited to bring to sound the whimsically written notes pattern. The swift movement in this part is twice interrupted by some tranquil bars; an other time, somewhat more cantabile for the flute and in the piano recalling the quiet eighth notes movement of the Introduzione. Hemsch is regarded as one of the most important Parisian harpsichord builders. Born near Cologne in 1700 as Johann Heinrich, he moved to Paris at the age of 28 to spend six years as an apprentice to Antoine Vater, another German émigré. Hemsch left the service of Vater to become an independent builder in 1734 and began work on his first instrument, finished two years later. The proportions of this instrument resemble those of the later harpsichords built by his master, Vater, on which Hemsch worked as an apprentice, although some characteristic details are Hemschian innovations. The resulting instrument is a double manual disposed with two eight foot choirs and one four foot, giving a very unusual level of colour diversity within each register - a quality only very few modern builders are capable of reproducing. Later in his career, Hemsch became supplier and tuner of harpsichords to the art patron la Pouplinière, who accommodated Jean-Philippe  Rameau as well as promoting his work. The original instrument from 1736, rarely copied because of its complexity, is at present to be found in the Museum of Fine Arts in  Boston, U.S. of A. The award-winning instrument used on this recording was built by Augusto Bonza (Turbigo, 2011). In the meantime he has fallen madly in love with Clara Wieck, a celebrated piano player and the daughter of his teacher. Father Wieck implacably exercises his veto against their relationship, causing years of psychological warfare between them. The other five are compilations of movements written years before, with a few new movements added. Opus 3, therefore, could be described as an environmentally friendly compilation of 60% recycled and 40% new material. The publication contains a wonderful variety of texture and colour, and is full of contrasting emotions. The individual concertos feature different instrumentations – pairs of oboes, recorders, cellos, violins and bassoons all make an appearance, as well as solo violin, oboe, flute and organ. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThe first concerto is the only one in the set that was newly composed – it contains no material reworked from earlier compositions. It is the most typical concerto grosso, a term implying the alternation of small groups of instruments with the full orchestra. In each movement, two pairs of solo instruments contrast with the full string orchestra. In the opening Allegro, a pair of oboes alternates with solo oboe and solo violin; in the following Largo, two recorders make way for the violin and oboe again, and in the closing Allegro a pair of oboes trades places with a pair of bassoons. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003eThe second concerto was probably written before 1720 for the opera orchestra in the Haymarket theatre in London. This proved to be important for her development as a composer, for while in the Austrian capital she worked closely with folksinger, poet and composer Walter Simlinger. \u003cbr\u003eHe wrote the libretti for her two operas, \u003cem\u003eDer letzte Tanz \u003c\/em\u003eand \u003cem\u003eDr. Pipalumbo \u003c\/em\u003e(1926-1927). \u003cbr\u003eCramer suffered recurrent money and health problems and in 1930 she was committed to a mental institution. After her release in January 1931 she returned to The Netherlands but withdrew entirely from public life, avoiding all contact with other Dutch musicians, and no more of her songs were published in her lifetime. However, she did not stop composing and over the years she also revised several of her earlier songs. In 1958 she deposited a suitcase full of manuscripts at a bank in Amsterdam. \u003cbr\u003eHer mental health problems persisted and she was forcibly hospitalised once again in 1960. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003eShe remained in a nursing home until her death on June 4th, 1968 at the age of 94. During the Renaissance the internal bore of the recorder was wide giving a round sound with rich lower tones. After the Baroque period many beautiful recorders were designed but in the long term they could not capture the increasingly loud, romantic and fast chromatic modern sounds. This required recorders to be louder and a sound with strong fundamentals. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThe narrow Baroque recorders were frequently copied since the revival of the old music scence and forms the basic model for most recorders that are now played.
