Before the days of air travel, the Rotterdam-New York journey played an important role for emigrants from Europe to America. During the 1930s, thousands of Europeans departed on one of the HAL ships, traveling from the Wilhelmina dock in Rotterdam to the United States, in search of a better life or a safe refuge. Many left their native countries forever in order to escape the growing threat of the nazi regime. This was also the case for Erich Collin, Roman Cycowski, and Harry Frommermann, all of whom sang in the famous Comedian Harmonists, and all three of whom were Jewish. They fled from Germany after the Nazis had disbanded their ensemble; ultimately they emigrated to the USA. America was not just the land of the free; it was a world power in the music business. European musicians had already been drawing inspiration from American examples for many years; the Comedian Harmonists, first set up in Berlin by Harry Frommermann in emulation of the American Revelers, were no exception. In the late 1930s, the American musical landscape was more fertile than ever. Jazz, which originated in black music, was undergoing a whirlwind development (swing, big band). White composers of musicals produced one immortal song after another: the American Songbook was coming into being. The influence of jazz on the originally European-derived folk music led to the development of bluegrass. Founded in 1930, the Mills Brothers are at first referred to as four boys and a guitar. They imitate brass instruments so convincingly that the labels on their records announce no musical instruments or mechanical devices used in this recording other than one guitar. The Ink Spots, modeled after the Mills Brothers, are founded in 1934. They accompany themselves on tenor guitar (a four-stringed instrument related to the banjo, with a characteristically high-pitched and clear-toned sound) and cello, which is played pizzicato as though it were a double bass. The consistently recurring guitar introduction is a hallmark of the Ink Spots' recordings. The Delta Rhythm Boys owe a large part of their fame to the number Dry Bones, which can be viewed as a musical anatomy lesson based on a Biblical text. The prophet Ezekiel has a vision: he wanders through a valley filled with skeletons. God piles up the bones, breathes life into them, and creates an army that helps the Jews to escape from Babylonian captivity. This was certainly the case when I met Phil, who had never before heard his Metamorphosis live on the harp. After my initial nervousness, tension soon melted away when I played the opening bars and he remarked “that sounds beautiful!”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter this special encounter, I looked into other pieces by Glass that could be played on the harp. I had heard him play the Opening Piece from ‘Glassworks’ himself, a very beautiful piece in its seemingly unending interchange between the two hands. The film music for The Hours was more tricky challenge. After examining the original score and the piano version I came to the conclusion that not all the movements could be arranged for the harp. But I managed to adapt six of the eleven numbers, working them out with the sound of the orchestral version in mind. I hope this album will add an extra dimension to the performance practice of Glass’s most frequently performed works.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e-- Lavinia Meijer\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis album of transcriptions of Philip Glass' music for harp, created by Korean-Dutch harpist Lavinia Meijer herself, comes pre-approved by the composer, who heard Meijer playing the transcriptions of Metamorphosis (1988) and encouraged her to pursue further experiments in the same vein. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eYou can see what he liked about the harp in his music. On one hand, it's a close substitute for a piano, which is involved in the originals of all three of these transcriptions. The excerpts from The Hours (tracks 7-12) were transcribed from a piano version of the original Nicole Kidman film soundtrack score, and unsurprisingly Meijer said that of the three works, that one gave her the most trouble. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut the harp is not equivalent to the piano in Glass' textures. Instead, with its greater variety of sonorities and attacks. It adds a slight elaboration to Glass' basic structures. And this is where the sound must have caught the composer's attention.  The kind of details Meijer adds to the music is the same as what Glass himself has added to his music over the years. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe result is an unusually satisfying way to encounter the music of Philip Glass, even though he, unlike Arvo Pärt, has rarely been subject to transcription. Audiophiles may have their own reasons for acquiring this release. We love the fact that these tunes have been treasured by so many others before us. They have been printed again and again in the tunebooks, and imprinted on the memories of generation after generation of singers, who continue to sing them at singing conventions, in worship services, and in many other settings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe story of the rural American sacred music featured in American Angels opens with the attempts of certain eighteenth-century colonists to “improve” upon the lining out of psalms. In this practice—the main musical worship practice in the Colonies at the time— a deacon read out a line of text, the congregation responded by singing it, the deacon read out another line of text, and so on. How did those in favor of replacing the “old way of singing” with “regular singing” accomplish their goal? With the introduction of the singing school, where students practiced singing the octave scale with European solmization syllables, ??fa-sol-la-fa-sol-la-mi-fa, and learned to sing music composed in three and four parts. The singing school acted as a primary means of teaching and disseminating music in New England during the eighteenth century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe musical settings of psalms and hymns taught in the earliest singing schools and published in the first colonial American tunebooks were imported from England. But by the late eighteenth century, New England tunesmiths—singing school masters who had themselves attended the singing schools—had started to make their own contributions. Many of them compiled their own tunebooks, which they sold to singing school students in each town they visited. They were at first greatly influenced by the English composers of their day, but soon the sound of their compositions began to reflect their rural American origins. Most frequently taking their texts from the English poet Isaac Watts, the New Englanders wrote pieces intended both for worship and for artistic expression. They favored among other styles four-part homophonic settings of psalms, such as Poland and Amanda, and fuging tunes featuring both homophonic and imitative sections, such as Blooming Vale. They had four children: sons Ira, George and Arthur, and a daughter, Frances. Father ran a Turkish bath. Ira dabbled in writing song lyrics while helping out with the customers, sowing the seeds of his long, marvellous partnership with his kid-brother composer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGeorge was a vigorous, active child, playing street hockey and roller-skating through the area. He had little interest in schooling. There was hardly any music in the household until a piano arrived in 1910. Intended primarily for Ira, it was George who was drawn to it most strongly. If it hadn’t appealed to him, he might have followed many of his friends’ paths and become a gangster.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of his piano teachers gave him Chopin, Liszt and Debussy to play, inspiring an early ambition to become a concert pianist. But the family’s need for money led him to drop out of high school at 15. He got a job as a song ‘plugger’ in the retail department of Jerome H. Remick \u0026amp; Co., one of several major popular music publishers located in Tin Pan Alley. His job was to sell their songs by playing and singing them for performers. That was how he met and befriended Fred Astaire, destined to be one of his greatest interpreters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe gradually broke into the pop song market he had come to know so well from the inside. The first of his songs to see print appeared in 1916. It bore the memorable title When You Want ’Em, You Can’t Get ’Em, When You’ve Got ’Em, You Don’t Want ’Em. He had to start somewhere! By the early ’20s, he was earning a healthy income from his own material. For several years he had also been taking private instruction in classical techniques. Sooner or later these two streams were bound to merge. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe premiere of Rhapsody in Blue took place as planned on February 12, 1924, in New York’s Aeolian Hall. Gershwin himself played the solo part. It came at the end of a long, varied program, but it was still received with overwhelming enthusiasm. This irresistible blend of ’20s jazz and daredevil classical virtuosity remains one of the most beloved and frequently performed of all American compositions. Walter Damrosch, conductor of the New York Symphony Orchestra, was in the audience when Gershwin’s rhapsody made its debut. Impressed by its unprecedented amalgamation of popular and classical styles, he commissioned Gershwin to compose a full-scale piano concerto. “Many persons had thought that my rhapsody was only a happy accident,” Gershwin wrote. “Well I went out, for one thing, to show them that there was plenty more where that came from. This factor was a major contributor to the apparent energy and spontaneity that is so well heard in this music.  The repertoire was chosen to be user friendly, vivid, colorful and impactful which is evident as these recordings have become sought after gems for both superb sound and enjoyment.\r\n\r\nThe philosophy of the recording process was to be as true to the natural acoustic and performance as possible which meant this was an \u003cstrong\u003eAnalog, Direct to 2 Track, Minimal Microphone Recording\u003c\/strong\u003e with no spotlighting of solo instruments.  Simply, these were not “fix it in the mix” recordings.\r\n\r\nWhat you hear is what went directly on half-inch tape using what is arguably the finest 2 Track 30 IPS Analog Recorder in the world. The Wilson Ultramaster, a highly modified Studer tape deck with custom designed electronics designed by John Curl.  To accomplish this difficult, time pressure recording, the recording engineering skills of the renowned Bruce Leek were employed.  Ergo, the finest acoustic, the finest musicians, the finest recording engineer and the finest equipment were all in play under the watchful eyes and ears of David and Sheryl Lee Wilson.\r\n\r\nThis edition of Center Stage at NativeDSD features an \u003cstrong\u003eAnalog to High Definition Stereo DSD 64 Digital Transfer by Bruce Brown at Puget Sound Studios using the Meitner ADC-8 Analog to Digital Converter from EMM Labs\u003c\/strong\u003e. Puget Sound Studios received the tapes from Wilson Audiophile Recordings, LLC, in a wooden crate. Master Tapes were then cataloged in an Excel spreadsheet. Each Master Tape was then inspected, cleaned with an anti-fungal solution, and then a lubricant was applied to prepare the Master Tapes for the transfer process. All splices were inspected and repaired, if necessary.\r\n\r\nBecause of the extreme dynamic range of this music, the apparent level is low as this is not a compressed recording.  As such, the timbre of the ensemble remains intact as well as the soundstage being completely natural.  One can hear the hall because there is no added enhancement to the reverberation.  \u003cstrong\u003eA word of caution when raising the volume please be careful as these are real world dynamics which can be harmful to equipment if one is not careful.\u003c\/strong\u003e\r\n\r\nThese recordings provide a graphic sense of time, space and naturalness. Often doubting his own abilities, Gershwin, at one point, felt compelled to approach Maurice Ravel for lessons in “serious” composition. Instead, Gershwin received the famous reply:\u003cbr\u003e“Why would you want to be a second-rate Ravel\u003cbr\u003ewhen you are already a first-rate Gershwin?”\u003cbr\u003eGershwin’s larger purpose in these works was to establish the credibility of jazz (and hence his own credibility), as music worthy of the concert hall and opera house.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Rhapsody In Blue” was conceived with the idea of correcting a misconception on the part of the American audience. While the word “jazz” implies to modern listeners a widely varied brand of music, in Gershwin’s day the name implied little more than syncopation. For the critics of jazz, this meant rhythmic monotony. It was Gershwin’s desire to demonstrate that jazz rhythms could be more flexible, as varied as those of concert music; the result has been a staple of the concert hall ever since.\u003cbr\u003eThe creation of Porgy and Bess took several years of planning and two years of active composition (as opposed to the three weeks which produced “Rhapsody In Blue”). How to use a libretto which required a predominantly Black cast? How to avoid the strong emotional associations of Black spirituals? Use only original music (although cast in the form of hymns or spirituals)? What to do with the dialogue of the White characters? Have it spoken while the Black dialogue continues in musical recitative? Gershwin’s success with the difficult aesthetic questions was sufficient to eventually find his opera staged at La Scala.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith both “Rhapsody In Blue” and Porgy and Bess now firmly established in the mainstream repertoire, Gershwin’s presence in the world of “Classical” music is now permanent. Still, the larger question remains — are these works “serious” compositions, or are they “popular” music in concert attire? While this question may be indicative of the confusion of the “post-modern” world. it seems doubly perplexing with the output of Gershwin. “Rhapsody In Blue\" has, after all, been accepted into “serious” concert repertoire because it is so “popular” with audiences. Is the song “Summertime” somehow a more “serious” work than the song “I Got Rhythm” because it was conceived as part of a full opera? Yet, paradoxically, audiences have always loved drum solos, good, bad, and indifferent.\r\n\r\nFor five years Eddie Graham was the drummer with Earl Hines, one of the greatest and most spontaneously inventive pianists in jazz history. Hines had routines on several numbers audiences demanded every night, but on others, the performance varied according to his mood and inspiration. He himself had a practically perfect time, but the counter-rhythms he delighted in setting up between his two hands created something of a problem for even the most talented of drummers. Eddie Graham quickly learned to cope with it and Hines remarked gratefully on the fact that during his tenure all members of the group were “comfortable with one another,” and that there was “no temperament, no selfishness, no conflict of personalities,” all of which he had endured in earlier phases of his career. “Eddie is a very gifted drummer,\" he added, “who can put on an act that is a whole show in itself, and does.”\r\n\r\nThis “act” was one Hines appreciated very much. \u003cem\u003e“It takes the pressure off me,”\u003c\/em\u003e he said on many occasions. After creating a percussion fantasy that enchanted most listeners, Eddie would rise up modestly from behind his glittering equipment to a storm of applause. Small and dark-haired, his appearance suggested a veritable Merlin of the drums.\r\n\r\nHis solos, as this album demonstrates, were logically constructed and never a matter of loud, wild noise. The excellent recording here also shows the good, clean sound he consistently produced from the drums. Muffled thuds, as of backstage mayhem, have never been a part of his stock in trade. His strong beat and accents have a positive definition that frequently brings to mind the work of one of his favorites, Buddy Rich.\r\n\r\nFor this session, he left the selection of tunes to Jane Jarvis and Jim DeJulio, who chose fine standards written between 1927 and 1949. Tempos and rhythms were mutually agreed upon before each performance, most of which were made in one take. Always reaching for intimacy.\r\n\r\nEurope, while a haven for Jazz players from the United States, with the exception of the odd bassist or horn player, has yet to birth many world-class players. Actually, that may be a bit too narrow a definition. European players and I’m generalizing here so there are numerous counter-examples, in broad terms are superb executioners that seem to lack originality. Toïs, lovingly recorded by Netherlands-based Turtle Records, has set out to counter that trend.\r\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: justify\"\u003eTake, “I Got It Bad and That Ain’t Good,” for example, played as a trio. Verploegen has a Miles tone and feel, and the open space left by the trumpeter lets the bassist and drummer show their chops without showing off. We are left with, just as Miles left us with, the fragments of the tune necessary to fill them in an emotional heartbeat, and nothing more.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: justify\"\u003e“Brad’s Feast,” an original, adds Verhoeff’s guitar to great effect. A slow burner, the tune is familiar, but since the playing is so tight, so right, we can forgive that. In fact, throughout the album, each player consistently offers themselves in service of the song rather than using the situation as a personal showcase. If you are looking for knock-out solos, blistering runs or center-stage heroics, this is not the place. Instead, listen closely to “What Is This Thing Called Love?” The soft bass-and-drum opening leads to a gentle and oblique guitar statement followed by the tasteful trumpet. The mood is sophisticated, romantic and elegant. Multiply that by nine, once for each track, and you have the album.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: justify\"\u003eAs for the sound, it is reference quality, and one look at the liner notes explains why. Neil Patel of Avalon Acoustics lent both expertise and speakers to the mastering. The rest of the mastering chain, as you’d expect, was from Spectral and MIT. The recording was done with conversion happening with dCS equipment. The result is a very open and natural soundfield. The feel is of live music happening in real space right in front of you. Dynamics are superb and tonality is as good — top to bottom — as I ever expect to hear from any album.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: justify\"\u003eThis is a superb introduction to a swinging European combo to watch out for. I find it no coincidence that Gershwin wanted Ravel to become his mentor, whereas Ravel in his turn rejected this request in order not to disturb Gershwin´s unique talent of combining jazz and classical styles. I initially came across her work when my friend Paul Seydor, a senior writer for The Absolute Sound, gave me a copy of her first Groove Note album \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHere’s to Ben\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, a tribute to legendary tenor saxophonist Ben Webster. I don’t know which impressed me more: the lushness of her voice or the vividness of her interpretations.\r\n\r\nMy enthusiasm intensified with her second Groove Note album \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAutumn Leaves: The Songs of Johnny Mercer\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, which I reviewed. I likened my experience to being the last person in a small jazz club where she creates a direct link among her, the microphone, and the listener.\r\n\r\nThe immediacy is uncommon. The sound of her breathing, which would be intrusive in other singers, is so sensuous that it adds to the beauty of her voice. The perfection of her diction is so palpable that you don’t just hear the words — you feel their significance.\r\n\r\nNow, in her third Groove Note album Lush Life, she sounds even more sensuous while a new musical background “strings” has been added to what so far has been a compact jazz-group accompaniment. Although jazz and strings aren’t often paired, they can go together nicely. Clifford Brown worked with them. So have Charlie Parker, Ben Webster, Ella Fitzgerald, and Shirley Horn, to name a few great jazz interpreters of the American songbook.\r\n\r\nBut these are strings with a difference, thanks to Bill Cunliffe’s remarkable arrangements.
