Having had many opportunities to get to know his music ever since I started playing the violin (the well-loved A minor Concerto from L’estro Armonico is one of the set pieces in Suzuki’s violin method and played by most 6-10 year olds!), the Seasons and L’estro featuring strongly in baroque concert programmes, it was with interest but also a number of pre-conceptions that I approached these relatively obscure concertos. I rather arrogantly assumed I’d have to put my mind to making them sound as different from each other as possible, as they probably wouldn’t assert their own character within the set by themselves. I’m ashamed of that thought now, since I quickly realised that I wasn’t dealing with ‘samey’ music at all, but with extreme inventiveness within a definite framework. Vivaldi uses melodic figurations in so many remarkable ways. It’s as though he likes to experiment with every possible variant and push the players beyond expectation of what might be coming next.

Having said that, the most predictable comment about his music is that his music is predictable! But listen, for example, to the last movement of Concerto no.1, where we see him first setting up a simple phrase, experimenting with the opening figure (first 2 bars) in minimal ways, taking us unexpectedly (unpredictably!) into a new key just when we expect the solo part to take charge. For 111 bars he lets his imagination run riot with this very simple opening figure, transforming it and avoiding any obvious phrasing that the listener might assume. This way, he creates a wonderful spirit of exploration in the music. Fragments of figurations are often thrown from one part to the next in the orchestra, later making up a whole phrase. Vivaldi also uses very simple tools by, for instance, making the tune leap across the two violin parts: there is an ascending triadic figure which goes to-and-fro between the fiddles as a variation on a similar tune heard earlier in a single part within the orchestra (Concerto no.3, first movement). His citing of a tune, repeating it twice note-by-note and then changing it at the last minute is often both witty and clever (like in Concerto no.5, first movement, during the 4th tutti section).

Vivaldi conveys so much variety and character; it feels easy to perform as the language is so direct and the expression within looks candidly at you from the page. The sublime slow movements (such as in Concertos nos. 1 and 11) recall descriptions or paintings of paradise where you literally feel like you’re hovering on a cloud for the duration of the movement… and the demon-like moments in Concerto no.8 (first movement) make you believe you’re being devoured by hungry tigers. I want to thank all the members of Arte dei Suonatori for helping to make this recording such an exciting project and for being so good-natured in putting up with all my experiments in the sessions. The arrangement promised gain to all involved: Haydn was to receive the princely sum of 1200 pounds (far exceeding any of his previous earnings); Salomon was to put on an eagerly awaited series of concerts in the Hannover Square Rooms featuring Haydn's latest works; and the public was to be presented with the pinnacle of Haydn's symphonic oeuvre - the 12 London Symphonies.

Salomons timing in securing this accord was impeccable. Yet the reality was that like any self-respecting German composer of his time, Georg Phillip Telemann was thoroughly conversant with the stylistic conventions of other European countries and, notably, those of the great rivals from Italy and France.

By the early 1720s Telemann had already displayed a thorough working knowledge of the Italian style of composition in his numerous sonatas and concerti, a style that was to be heard all over Europe. However, until this time the French had managed to maintain certain characteristics of their music; namely the overture and suite together with its wide array of dances. Unlike the Italians who preferred overt displays of virtuosity in chamber music, the French developed the original form of the Sonate en Quatuor with its four closely-knit parts. These were quartets in the real sense of the word, in contrast to the trio sonatas Telemann had been writing until then for the same combination of instruments.

Telemann had demonstrated his exceptional grasp of this form when he published his first set of Paris Quartets in Hamburg in 1730. These were reprinted by Le Clerc in Paris in 1736, and while they were inspired by the French style, the structure of the compositions are more Italian; two concerti, two balletti and two sonatas. Perhaps it was because of the Parisian success of these Quartets that Telemann decided to make a visit to Paris in 1737. He stayed for eight months and whilst there heard a number of his works performed at the public concerts of the Concert Spirituel and met some of the most famous musicians of the day. He heard his first set of quartets performed by the flautist Blavet, violinist Guignon, gambist Forqueray (the Younger) and cellist Edouard. These works became extremely popular and were performed with such extraordinary success in Paris that Telemann was inspired to write a further six Nouveaux Quatuors in 1738.

Death and Devotion Cantatas by Tunder, Weckmann, Buxtehude, and Ritter It is a remarkable fact that the most expressive and original vocal church music composed in Northern Germany during the latter half of the seventeenth century was the work not of cantors, but of organists. Some of this is due to the exceptional status which had been achieved by organists in cities like Hamburg and Lbeck in the course of the century; they had become both virtuosi par excellence, and at the same time learned composers. The foundation had been laid by the teachings of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621), who had brought an entire generation of North German organists to this exalted level. But at the same time as this generation, typified by Jacob Praetorius, Heinrich Scheidemann, Melchior Schildt, and others, concentrated primarily on the organ as a medium for performance and composition, their students, in turn, took things a step further. They assembled a group (usually a small one) of singers and instrumentalists around the organ for the performance of refined, erudite vocal music, strongly inspired by concertante church music from Italy. Freed from the confines of liturgical requirements, they therefore chose texts, both Latin and German, which offered numerous opportunities for expressive composition: specially chosen excerpts from the Bible (strikingly often those dealing with suffering and death) and devotional texts, many of which were strongly mystic or pietistic in tone. The most important member of this second generation was Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707), who was most probably a student of Scheidemann, and who succeeded Franz Tunder in the post of organist at the Marienkirche of Lbeck from 1668 until his death. His surviving compositions include not only a large quantity of organ and harpsichord works, but also a number of string sonatas and some 120 cantatas. The enormous range of texts, compositional techniques, and settings - from intimate solo cantatas to large-scale works - suggests that he enjoyed a good deal of artistic freedom.

A good example of this is provided by Buxtehudes setting, BuxWV 38, of the Psalm text Herr, wenn ich nur dich habe [Lord, when I have but Thee] (Psalm 73, verse 25-26), a beloved funerary text in seventeenth-century Germany, usually set as a solemn motet. In contrast, Buxtehudes setting is a fashionable, graceful Ciacona, with a repeated six-note bass motive - a compositional technique which originated in Italian secular music. Above this unchanging bass line, the soprano engages in lively exchanges with the two violins, including much word-painting, e.g. the swaying triplets at meines Herzens Trost (the comfort of my heart). This Ciacona was written in the 1670s; in contrast, the Dialogus inter Christum et fidelem animam, Wo ist doch mein Freund geblieben? [Where for is my friend departed] (BuxWV 111) is a late work of the 1690s. This dialogue between Christ and the faithful soul, sung respectively by bass and soprano, is based on a paraphrase of a familiar text from the Song of Songs, referring to the lost beloved (Christ in this context). The text is strophic, but Buxtehude only sets the beginning, the monologue of the searching soul, as a song with uncomplicated alternation between the soprano, accompanied only by the continuo, and the strings. After the Beloved has been found, a freely composed dialogue arises between the two voices, an operatic love duet which is crowned by the ecstatic 6/8 meter of the conclusion So lieben die Seele und Jesus zusammenSie brennen und stehen in lieblichen Flammen. [Thus the Soul and Christ mingle their loveThey live and burn in the flames of love]. O Gottes Stadt [O city of God] (Bux WV 87) is also based on a strophic song text, in this case drawn from the Himmlische Lieder of 1642 by Johann Rist, a poet who was both a familiar figure in organist circles in Hamburg as well as a friend to Buxtehudes presumed teacher, Scheidemann. Buxtehude uses only the first and last verses of Rists song text, which speaks of longing for the eternal heavenly Jerusalem. Rists text is made to order for a simple strophic aria (and in the 1642 collection, it is indeed set in this way by the Hamburg violinist Johann Schop), but it has inspired Buxtehude to compose a compelling, broadly proportioned concertante version in which the strings function as an emotional sounding board for the soprano another example of freely written organists music. The first verse is set as an expansive sarabande with strikingly realistic illustration of the believers sighs. The second verse begins in a hesitant, searching four quarter time, and Buxtehude also lets the words break off (wenn ich aus diesem Leben) [when from this life I]. But he returns to the ecstatic, dancing 3/4 meter, and the reason can be found in the continuation of the text (zu dir spring in dein Reich hinein) [leap up to Thy glorious kingdom]. The works climax comes with the elaborate setting of the rejoicing Zion with showy coloratura writing for the soprano. Buxtehude must have drawn much inspiration from the music of Franz Tunder (1614-1667), his predecessor in the office of Lbeck organist. Tunder was in close contact with the Sweelinck-based school of Hamburg organists. Buxtehude married Tunders daughter and in this way became the direct heir to his music.

Tunders compositions, of which disappointingly few have survived, are distinguished by their unusual richness of harmony and polyphonic writing. An Wasserflen Babylon [By the waters of Babylon], a much-loved chorale in North German organists circles, was composed by Tunder as a type of polyphonic motet for soprano (taking the chorale melody) and five stringed instruments. Tunder set the first lines of this hymn, known as the Lament of Zion very expressively, culminating in the chromaticism of the line da weinten wir [there we wept]. From this point onwards, the setting relaxes into a more homophonic, simpler idiom for the remaining lines of the hymn. Far different is Tunders Ach Herr, la deine lieben Engelein [O lord, let Thy dear angels] - a text which is widely known from the closing chorale of Bachs St. John Passion. This is the third verse of Martin Schallings 1571 hymn Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, o Herr [Great is my love for Thee, o Lord]; the chorale melody usually associated with it is completely missing here, however. Instead, Tunder, like his son-in-law Buxtehude some years later in O Gottes Stadt, has written a concertante aria on the text. After a speaking sinfonia, the soprano sings the first half of the text in continuous dialogue with the strings; the last line, ruhen bis am jngsten Tage [to rest until the final day] is then illustrated in a static instrumental interlude. The change of affect afterwards, with Alsdenn vom Tode erwecke michin ewiger Freud [so then Thou shalt awaken me from death.in eternal joy], in rapid triple time, could not be greater. Tunder made a close study of the vocal church music composed by Monteverdi and his successors, as can be clearly seen in the German composers reworking of a motet by Giovanni Rovetta. But Tunders other Latin settings also draw their inspiration from the south, as is surely the case for O Jesu dulcissime, a solo motet for bass on a seventeenth-century devotional text. Matthias Weckmann (1616/9-1674) a student of both Heinrich Schtz and Jacob Praetorius, and organist at the Hamburg St. Jacobi from 1655, also wrote unmistakeable organists music. In 1663, Hamburg suffered a serious epidemic of the plague, which killed many citizens including several of the most important musicians, among them Scheidemann and the city cantor, Thomas Selle. This catastrophe inspired the large-scale dialogue Wie liegt die Stadt so wste [How the city doth lie desolate], completed by Weckmann on October 14th 1663. Here again we have an unmistakably liberated composer at work: the verses from the Lamentations of Jeremiah have been carefully selected and reshuffled in such a way as to allow them to be set as a soprano-bass dialogue. With the exception of the closing segment, the voices only sing separately: the soprano assumes the role of narrator, and symbolizes the mourning widow at the opening of the piece, whereas the bass takes the part of the somber, sinful prophet himself. The structure of the dialogue is underlined instrumentally by the sopranos accompaniment being limited to the continuo, while the bass is accompanied by the full string ensemble. This basic contrast, as well as the inspired alternation of recitative and aria styles from segment to segment, has produced a poignant setting of this Old Testament prophecy of doom. Particularly impressive are the desolate opening, the sighing Ciacona for bass, Man hrets wohl [Well dost thou hear] (because of the Italianate technique, just as in Buxtehude accompanied only by two violins and continuo), and the closing segment: here the two voices join together in a compelling cry for help (Ach Herr, siehe an mein Elend) [Ah Lord, behold Thou my wretchedness].

The organist Christian Ritter (1645/8-1717/25) was of Saxon origin and probably received his education in Dresden as a student of Schtz and other teachers. Later he worked alternately in Stockholm, Dresden, and Hamburg. His 22 surviving vocal works are of high quality and diversity - yet another example of organists music. Both in Stockholm and Dresden he attained the rank of assistant leader of court music. Cantatas, particularly those by Buxtehude and other North German composers, were familiar and beloved in the Swedish capital, while in Dresden, after the death of Schtz, the Italian style ruled the day. O amantissime sponse Jesu, a Latin devotional text, has the rhythmic power and vocal refinement (particularly in the recitatives) of the best Italian church music of the period, but the heavy five-part string accompaniment and the innovative dissonance of the harmonies are both unmistakably North German - nowhere as clearly as in the tension-filled opening, where the soprano declaims the motto of this cantata, surrounded by rich harmonies. The score, preserved in the Berlin library, was already published in a modern edition at the beginning of the 20th century, and in 1959 in the Netherlands, a famous, widely distributed recording of the piece was made by the singer Aafje Heynis, conducted by Anthon van der Horst - who was for more than 30 years the artistic director of The Netherlands Bach Society. The contents of that case were even more impressive: Mozart's Oboe Quartet! What wonderful music that was for me, and how beautiful the oboe sounded: open, warm, expressive, and piercing. It went straight to my childish soul. That was when I decided to start playing the oboe, and that's what I'm still doing today. Remarkable, really, that Mozart: he only lived for 35 years and he wasn't someone who immediately made an unforgettable impression when he walked into a room. In his day he was respected, in a sense he was famous. But there were composers who had more successful careers. He composed a staggering quantity of music, all of it in a style that you could describe as being of its time. Some 250 years later, it's a period in history that might or might not appeal to you. The appeal of a world of lace, periwigs, and Meissen porcelain. But the strange thing is that when you hear Mozart's voice 250 years later, that appeal becomes quite powerful, 250 years. Back then, as a 13 year old, I was hooked, and I'm not the only one: at the very moment that I'm writing this, we are all celebrating Mozart's 250th birthday. All you have to do is turn on the radio and you can hear Mozart. Either there's a wonderful opera, or one of his 41 symphonies, 27 string quartets, serenades, piano sonatas, incidental stage works, contradances, whatever. Of course there may be a potboiler here or there, but still, strangely enough, nearly all of Mozart's works are masterpieces, soaring far above the prevailing Stamitz-and Salieri atmosphere....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZxYCVTTCco

On 18 November 1763, Leopold Mozart, his wife, and his two children arrived at the first station on the grand European tour which they had started in Salzburg on 9 June of that year. Their support and refuge in the French capital was Baron Friedrich Melchior Grimm (1723-1807), a Regensburg-born diplomat and litterateur who was employed in Paris as secretary to the Duke d'Orléans. Grimm turned out to be Mozart's staunchest advocate in Paris, not only on the occasion of this first visit but again in 1766, and to a lesser extent in 1778. Together with several friends from the Encyclopédistes, Grimm published a biweekly bulletin Correspondance Littéraire, devoted to cultural and particularly to literary matters, which he sent to a number of the seats of the nobility in Germany and Northern Europe. On 1 February 1764, Leopold, bursting with pride, wrote to the wife of his friend Lorenz Hagenauer in Salzburg: “At this very moment, four of Mr. Wolfgang Mozart's sonatas are being engraved for printing. You can well imagine the excitement which will be occasioned in the world by these sonatas, when people see on the title page that they are the work of a child of seven.” (1) As early as 1 December 1763, or less than two weeks after the family's arrival, Grimm was filling his bulletin with praise for Wolfgang's talent in improvisation and composition: “What is truly unbelievable, is to see him play without any music before him for a full hour at a time, and to surrender himself completely to the inspiration of his genius, and to a wealth of enchanting inventions, which he can link together with perfect taste and without any confusion.

The most seasoned Capellmeister could not have any more profound understanding of harmony and the modulations, with which he can travel the most unfrequented routes, always with the greatest correctness. The earliest works, small-scale rococo trifles in which the violin played a subsidiary part and the keyboard (virtually certain to be a harpsichord at that date) was the star performer, date from the time of his first major tour through Europe. Leopold Mozart had four of these early sonatas published in Paris in 1764, two as opus 1 and two as opus 2. In the following year, he had another series of six sonatas published in London as opus 3. Yet another series of six sonatas, opus 4, written in the Hague by Wolfgang (and possibly by Leopold?) in 1766, appeared that same year, both there and in Amsterdam. Then Mozart's production of violin and piano sonatas was interrupted by a twelve-year silence. Not until his stay in Mannheim in 1777 and 1778 would he complete four new sonatas, in which the violin's role had grown considerably, offering a genuine partnership to the piano. In the summer of 1778, Mozart added two more new sonatas to the series of six Paris sonatas, and published the set there as Opus 1, as if he intended his mature oeuvre to begin at this point. Then, after another interval of three years, came the six sonatas published in 1781 as Opus 2 by Artaria in Vienna, Mozart's new and ultimate place of residence. One of the pieces had been composed in Mannheim, and another presumably dated back to Salzburg. Mozart composed the other four sonatas in the summer of 1781 in Vienna. The language of Haydn's later keyboard writing, containing such infinitesimal subtlety of expression, inflection, dynamic range, colour, and every mood under the sun, from tempest to sunny wit, seems to me perfectly matched by the gem of a piano used for this recording, dating from Vienna c.1785. In truth, I have never encountered an instrument capable of such breadth of touch and response from this period: to my mind, Haydn's last, and greatest, keyboard works, richly deserve being heard on such a piano, in order that the fullest range of expression and depth of imagination contained in these remarkable pieces may be brought alive. Commissioned by Breitkopf to write a group of piano sonatas in 1789, Haydn ended up composing only two: the Sonatas in C and Eb, Hob. XVI:48/49. Taken together, these new works represent an astounding advance in the composer's language on the keyboard. The opening Andante con espressione from the Sonata in C major is a set of variations, alternating major-minor tonality, and contains a level of mercurial fantasy and full use of all registers of the instrument, hitherto unmatched. The highly detailed dynamic, phrasing, and articulation markings represent Haydn's clearest intentions in performance, punctuated by many periods of silence. Haydn is the first composer to use silence in such a magical way! There are only two movements in this sonata: the ensuing Presto finale is the first keyboard movement of its type to draw inspiration from the sheer ebullience and brilliant scoring of finales from his later symphonies - together with an unmistakable, and increasing indebtedness, to Muzio Clementi, whose playing and piano sonatas were both greatly admired by the composer. The paired Sonata in Eb seems to me to be the most balanced, perfect composition. The outer movements date from 1788/89, but the work was only completed with the composition of the centre-piece: an extended, highly poignant, slow movement, written in 1790 during a period in which the composer felt troubled and lonely. He later admitted this movement was 'full of significance' to his close friend, and dedicatee of this sonata, Marianne von Genziger. Lack of space prevents a fuller discourse on the great merits of this work, but attention should be drawn to the vigour and inspiration of the first movement: that Haydn can sustain our interest with such suspense through the development section, using very little motivic material, and continue to do so in the unexpected final coda, is nothing short of remarkable. There is even a brief suggestion of Beethoven's Appassionata Sonata - as well as his Fifth Symphony! The simple, yet sublime, final Tempo di Minuet balances out the powerful opening movements beautifully, with delicate decoration, intense charm and a central minore section that is highly suggestive of Schubert!...

Trombonist Jorgen van Rijen is one of the few musicians who is among the elite of his profession when playing either a modern or a baroque instrument. He was bitten by the bug when he was still a student and arrived in Lyon. There he met the baroque specialist Daniel Lassalle, who was giving lessons in the technique of playing historical trombones. Lassalle brought Van Rijen's attention to the small number of surviving trombone concerti from the early Classical period and the extensive body of baroque music for small ensembles which combined the trombone with strings and continuo.

It was a revelation for Van Rijen to discover that it was possible to execute rapid running passages and delicate ornaments with the baroque trombone. He was a trombonist whose striking technical and musical abilities inspired the composers of his time, just as Van Rijen does today. Leopold Mozart was on the auditioners' commission when Gschladt came to audition for a job with the Archepiscopal court orchestra. In the course of the audition, Gschladt performed on no fewer than three instruments: trombone, trumpet, and violin, an unimaginable feat for a performer nowadays. Although ostensibly a law student, Telemann's compositions had so impressed one of the city's Burgomasters that he was rewarded with a fortnightly commission for St.Thomas', to be accompanied by 'ample remuneration'. Perhaps noting Telemann's own observation of Kuhnau - 'his frail constitution leads one to expect his early death' - the council reassured the twenty-one year old student of his suitability for the post. Defying all predictions, however, they had to wait over twenty years for a similar opportunity. Kuhnau died on 5th June 1722. Telemann was by this time a musician of considerable repute, established in Hamburg. There were five initial applicants for the newly vacant post, including Telemann. The Leipzig council weren't going to let him slip the net a second time, and, after complying with his request to be exempted from teaching Latin, he was unanimously elected to the post. Whether Telemann gave serious consideration to the post or not remains unclear, but following the success of his petition to the Hamburg city council for a pay increase, he declined the position. After a second election in 1723, the Darmstadt court capellmeister Christoph Graupner was appointed, but when he failed to obtain release from his employer, Johann Sebastian Bach took his place. And so the two great composers' paths crossed; yet the different directions their lives would take was evident from early on: for Telemann the new galant style, for Bach the perfecting of his contrapunctal skills..... When Johann Sebastian Bach was appointed Kantor in 1723 to the church of St Thomas, Leipzig, he may have hoped to augment his salary by regular commissions for the composition of secular cantatas for special occasions. But in the event, his expectations were only partially realised. The few commissions Bach received were for royal occasions, such as birthdays, a royal visit to Leipzig by King August III of Poland, homages to University professors and weddings....

GEORG MUFFAT, A EUROPEAN WITHOUT BORDERS 'Die Noten, die Saiten, die liebliche Music-Thonen geben mir meine Verrichtungen, und da ich die Franzsische Art der Teutscher und Welscher einmenge, keinen Krieg anstiffte, sondern vielleicht derer Vlker erwnschter Zusammenstimmung den lieben Frieden etwann vorspiele.' He was trained as an organist in Paris, where he received lessons between 1663 and 1669 from teachers including Jean-Baptiste Lully, the Florentine kitchen-boy who became more French than Louis XIV himself once he arrived in Versailles. Later, Muffat popped up again in Alsace (in Slstat and Molsheim), pursuing the study of law for a year in the German city of Ingolstadt. We rediscover him next in Vienna, where he became acquainted with the work of prominent composers such as Valentini, Bertali, Ziani, and Schmelzer. After a short time spent wandering around Prague, Muffat entered the service of Salzburg archbishop Max Gandolph as court organist. The concerti which we have selected for this recording are in the four-movement concerto grosso tradition; but Telemann has given each work a unique character, without once repeating himself. The concerto in F major TWV 52:F1 is firmly in the style of a concerto for soloists in the Italian manner, where expressivity is paramount. The amorosa sweetness of the opening movement and the dramatic cast of the third movement are linked by the energy of the allegros, where Telemann demands the most brilliant virtuosity from the recorder and bassoon, which are treated as complete equals. The concerto in G major TWV 54:G1, with its concertino of two traversi and bassoon* set against the strings’ ripieno, is faithful to the principles of the concerto grosso. The concept of opposing groups is sharpened in the first movement—a peaceful cantilena from the soloists interrupted by a joyful allegro for the strings; this is followed by a rustic dance, then a tender largo, an intimate moment for the winds, scarcely disturbed by the strings which subtly underline the cadences. The vigorous accents of the polonaise-finale awaken the soloists from their dreamy lethargy, drawing them into a whirlwind of joyful and irresistible virtuosity.

This disc of solo violin music is a real mixture of some favourite pieces. Each piece encompasses a unique expressive world where discovering the real essence of every movement becomes a kind of obsession! The concertos in A minor and E major are old friends. I’ve grown up with them and I played them a lot when young. The other two, in G minor and A major, were very familiar (as harpsichord concertos or in various transcriptions) – relations I knew reasonably well but not such close friends. It has been a delight to explore these pieces and renew acquaintance, first hand.

It's not easy to pick out personal highlights in these richly-endowed works but here are a few. It was an unusual pleasure bubbling along with the cascading arpeggios in the A major (normally played by the right hand of the harpsichord ) and contrasting that with the soulful melody beginning in the lower registers of the instrument in the opening solo entry. An extraordinary sense of exhilaration! In contrast, The A minor brings something totally different, a kind of symmetrical quality: the clarity of structure in the first movement, the sense of freedom in the slow movement and then coming back down to earth with the vivacious fugal gigue to end. The focus for the player here is about structure and pace, the building up of excitement throughout each sequence towards the climaxes.
The E major concerto is life-embracing and joyful in its larger scale. The expression in the contemplative slow moves between a deep sense of sorrow and tender hope; you can’t help reflecting on Bach’s humanity and the endless creative tools at his disposal. Despite this lack of information, we can surmise he produced them for his pupils at the Pietà, perhaps during the late 1720's and 1730's. Bach, Telemann and several French composers all explored the chamber concerto medium to a great degree. 18th-century Italian composers, who concentrated on opera, sacred and secular music for the voice, appear to have ignored it, with the exception of Vivaldi.A score of a flute concerto by Vivaldi was recently discovered by the musicologist Andrew Woolley among the Marquess of Lothian family papers in the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh. It is thought that the score of the concerto by Vivaldi, titled Il Gran Mogol, was collected in the 1730's by Lord Robert Kerr, the son of the third Marquis of Lothian, during a "grand tour" of continental Europe. During his Grand Tour, Lord Kerr may have actually attended a concert at the Ospedale Della Pietà, a major attraction for foreign visitors to the city. On that tour, Kerr, a flautist, is also believed to have acquired three pieces found in the same folder as the concerto. He was commissioned into the army in 1739, was captain of the grenediers and died at the battle of Culloden in 1746, fighting for government forces against the Jacobites.Il Gran Mogol, referring to India or the Mogul empire, is believed to have been written by Vivaldi in the late 1720's or early 1730's as part of a quartet of short "national" concertos. The other three in this collection were entitled La Franca, La Spagna, and L’Inghilterro. All four of these concertos were referred to in the sales catalogue of an 18th-century Dutch bookseller, but only Il Gran Mogol has since been discovered.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fppQseH1ZP0

The Duos for Violin and Viola by Mozart have long been favourite pieces of ours – pieces we’d take out and play when there wasn’t a keyboard player or cellist to hand, or busk as teenagers to earn extra pocket money. Back then, the audience’s response clearly indicated how appealing these pieces were as our takings always doubled when we played them! These works never cease to amaze – Mozart uses the two instruments so effectively and with such exquisite craftsmanship that he never leaves one wondering where the rest of the string quartet might have gone….They are also hugely engaging to play and so endlesslyrich and interesting that the appeal to the listener is guaranteed. Mozart’s reference to other genres is always fascinating. In this case the writing is dramatic, operatic even (the violin taking the role as soprano diva (!) and the viola as the heroic tenor?!). One could perhaps go as far to say that these duos are distillations of the art of chamber music as in the Haydn quartets, but more naturally recreational and less self-conscious.For a violist they are about as exposed as you can be; hitherto very few sonatas or concerti had been written for solo viola – and the accompaniment would seldom have been as scant as a single violin. The conversational and imitative nature of the writing allows for freedom andcharacterization, and it was refreshing and rewarding to be as spontaneous as possible in the recording sessions. It was also a diverting and enjoyable experience to record two of the Michael Haydn duos, previously unknown to us both. The character of these pieces is often reminiscentof Austrian folkmusic and it really seems as if you can hear the yodelling vernacular bouncing off the mountains in timely echoes. The challenges in these works are quite different to those of his friend Wolfgang – the demands placed on the violinist are obvious as the writing is busy, yet in need of a casual fluidity, whereas the violist has the task of being constantly inventive with material which is largely accompanimental (melody and bass, in effect). Who knows?Maybe Wolfgang and Michael tried these out during Mozart’s visit to Salzburg when he helped his friend complete a set of six Sonatas in 1783.Rachel & JaneDuos for Violin and Viola

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmtD6V2wo2s

For two soloists chose themselves – so-called ‘Bach Double’ (a.k.a. the famous Concerto for TwoViolins in D minor) and the work for violin and oboe. Of course, the universal appeal of the former is unsurpassed with its timelessly beautiful middle movement of exquisite conversations between the two violins, framed by vigorous outer movements. In fact, this piece is a concerto for6 parts, as he himself stated on the manuscript title page ‘Concerto a Sei’ – all parts playing a crucial part in the colour and richness of the ensemble.

Performing these pieces with just single players on each part rather than an orchestra makes the roles of each particularly pronounced and clear, all of us ‘concerto-ing’, not just the conventional ‘soloists’.The other double concerto on this recording has a darker, broader and more dramatic landscape. The contemplative slow movement is the best answer to the question ‘what can I listen to after such a long day’s work?’, its gentle swing and beautiful mellifluous lines soothing any aches and pains. The last movement feels like a gutsy earth-bound ‘clog dance’ full of reels and japes.

The Triple Concerto in A minor is in a world of its own: it’s really a harpsichord concerto to which the colours of the flute and violin are sprinkled – the same scoring as in Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no 5. Written about fifteen years after the Brandenburg, Bach adapted the outer movements of the Triple from his Prelude and Fugue, bwv 894, and the slow movement comes from the Organ Trio Sonata, bwv 527. It’s a brilliantly written piece for the harpsichord showing off many novel keyboard tricks with rapid figurations and interesting and engaging ripeno parts.

As we know, recycling his own works and adapting them for different purposes and contexts was a common practice for Bach, and it is widely known that his harpsichord concertos all found their musical voice, initially, in versions for other instruments, especially the violin. Such is the case with both these double concertos; for the violin and oboe concerto the only extant source is the two-harpsichord score from the composer’s Collegium Musicum concert series in the 1730s.The scoring of violin and oboe is speculative, albeit rather more than a guess. The Concerto for Three Harpsichords in C major is also believed to have been conceived originally as a Triple Violin Concerto in D major. It’s a treat to play: the richly interweaving lines of the solo instruments providing intensity and exhilaration, whether in conversation or competition. The solo passages take your breath away within the realms of virtuosic writing.Knowing Bach’s writing for violin we can understand his fondness for the instrument, not least the care in exceptional craftsmanship of idiomatic writing for it. It goes well beyond any other baroque composer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arNHbK3ctRE

Rachel Podger Meets Holland Baroque

In September 1728, Vivaldi met the Habsburg Emperor Charles VI in or near Trieste, where the emperor was supervising the construction of a new harbor. Charles was a great admirer of Vivaldi, and he gave him the title of knight and a golden chain with a medallion, and invited him to visit Vienna. In turn, Vivaldi gave the emperor a manuscript with a collection of concertos entitled ‘La Cetra’ (the cittern or lyre).

It was probably no coincidence that the composer had used the same title for the Twelve Violin Concertos Opus 9 ‘La Cetra’ featured on this album, which he published a year earlier through Le Cène in Amsterdam, with a dedication to the Emperor.

According to the Vivaldi scholar Michael Talbot, the lyre symbolized the great love of music of the Habsburgers. Earlier, in 1673, Giovanni Legrenzi had already dedicated an early anthology - likewise entitled La Cetra - to the-then Emperor Leopold I. Talbot also considers the use of scordatura (adjusted tuning of the strings) in the violin part of the 6th and 12th concertos of Opus 9 to be a homage to the Habsburg Emperor.

The scordatura practice was indeed a popular tradition in Austria and Bohemia, as we know from the violin music of Biber and Schmelzer. Concerning the remarkable encounter between Emperor Charles and Vivaldi at Trieste in 1728, the Abbé Conti wrote: ‘The Emperor talked about music at length with Vivaldi. The young composer was probably on the road again. He had been employed (but without pay!) since the age of nine as violinist in the Archbishop’s court orchestra where father Mozart also played; but Mozart spent half of his time travelling, usually accompanied by his father. Leopold Mozart was a man with a mission. He was convinced that the birth of his exceptional son was a miracle that had descended on him, and he saw it as his holy duty to introduce Wolfgang to the world. He pursued this aim with diligence. Right up to the painful moment in 1781 when Mozart moved to Vienna and set up as an independent creative artist, father Leopold remained his impresario, concert manager, and the driving force behind Mozart’s career. For years on end, Mozart travelled constantly throughout Europe, from Pressburg (Bratislava) to Paris, from Naples to London. And Leopold arranged performances for the imperial family in Vienna, the Kings of France and England, and in the palaces of the religious and secular nobility of Europe. Mozart visited France on three occasions. During the great European tour as a little boy of seven and eight, when he visited Paris with his family, he was idolized. Every nobleman’s palace right up to the King of France, opened its doors to him. But when he returned in 1778 with his mother, it was a very different story. Mozart went to France with dreams of settling in Paris as an opera composer. His old friend Gluck and the Italian composer Piccinni ruled the roost, but they stood at the heads of two warring musical factions. And friendly Baron Grimm, “to whom”, according to Leopold in 1764, “we owe everything”, was by no means as forthcoming as he had been fourteen years ago. A 22-year-old Mozart was now only one among the many talented newcomers streaming into Paris. He was no longer the amazing six-year old curiosity, full of musical tricks and spectacular surprises, who had enthralled an audience eager for something new. No; this time Mozart did not really feel welcome in Paris. To make things even worse, Wolfgang’s mother died in Paris on 3 July 1778. In a most moving letter, Mozart informed his father of her death: “Mon très cher Père...”. The family member to whom he felt closest was gone. She had been a sweet-natured woman, with an inherent joie de vivre and a sense of humour that kept everything on an even keel: fortunately she passed both characteristics on to her son.......

Despite Georg Philipp Telemann's mother's clear efforts to warn her son against 'note-poison' (Notengift) as a youth, Telemann (1681-1767) became one of Germany's most prolific, accessible and popular composers in his day. When he set off to study law in Leipzig, he purposefully left all instruments, music and manuscript paper behind. However, as he recalled in his memoirs, when his roommate uncovered in his underwear a psalm he had set to music, his true vocation as a musician was never questioned again. Exposure to a large cross-section of society in his travels and in the many eminent positions he secured during his lifetime enabled him to soak up the latest vogue in musical styles. For instance, as Kapellmeister under Count Promnitz in Sorau, one of the earliest posts he held, he was obliged to study and compose in the manner of the great French master, Jean Baptiste Lully. The immediate result was the completion of two hundred French 'Ouvertures' in just two years. (Handel remarked that his compatriot composed music with the kind of ease another might write a letter.) It is well documented that Telemann's contemporaries marveled at his command of the French, Italian and even Polish national musical idioms he incorporated into his works. The 'Paris' Quartets (1730) and 'Nouveaux Quatuors' (1738) are a fine example of his contribution to instrumental music in the Baroque era. While they reflect his mastery of Corelli's Italian Sonata/Concerto forms and Lully's French Suite influences, they also provide a departure point for the forward-looking conversational galant style........

A Producer's Note Before embarking upon these recordings of Mozart's complete duo music for piano and violin, my experience of many of these works was as a typical post-war listener. That is to say, these were sonatas for violin and these should be performed only one at a time, usually as a good way to limber up the bowing arm and lubricate the fingers before the serious recital 'material' began. The journey of a producer in such a project - apart from all the generic responsibilities of supervising the sessions, ensuring all the music is covered and choosing the 'takes' which constitute the final product - involves regularly questioning the underlying motivation for wanting to communicate these pieces in a certain way. Both Gary Cooper and Rachel Podger have discovered a particular essence in this music, which has illuminated our understanding of the genre in Mozart's hands. For this reason, this is a radical series. For some, it may lack a tradition of the kind of structured and cultured elan which Szymon Goldberg and Radu Lupu perpetuated (produced by that wonderful Decca doyen of the dark art, Christopher Raeburn) but for others it will lift the dialogue and characterisation onto new and irradiating levels. Of course, each volume has its own narrative and how brilliantly Gary has managed to programme early (some very early!), middle and late sonatas in ways which allow one to understand Mozart's various ploys and distinctive ambitions in this music. In an ideally balanced oeuvre, one wishes there were another three big mid-to-late works. Yet what this series has done is highlight the care Mozart took in the refinement of sonatas or variations 'to order'- a touching insight into awareness of capability, perhaps individual characters of performers, and that delectable turn of domestic tenderness which these pieces often exhibit. These two players bring these intimacies to bear wonderfully and, as producer, I had great fun working with them to find the shifting moods in music whose unpretentiousness belies the supreme quality of most of these works. Indeed, some of the sonata are far greater than I had imagined. If the piano sonatas (well, say the last ten) draw upon microcosms of allusion and reference to fellow instruments and their idioms (serenades and the like), then these 'high end' piano-violin sonatas take trips which almost exceed their bounds - think of those great long adagios. So, my lasting impression, having dissected every note of the music, is of a cornucopia of hidden gems; hidden because history has under-rated, misunderstood and bowdlerized the collective meaning of these works by assuming that it is an uneven genre - but then so are the symphonies and even the operas! Finally, one asks why there hasn't previously been a complete recording on historical instruments. From my 'privileged' position as listener-in-chief, I can tell you it is because no pair can make such transparent and difficult music sound so effortless, elegant, witty, emotionally persuasive and enjoyable.

It goes without saying that Telemann had a thorough command of the French and Italian styles. Countless ensembles, including ours, have played such pieces. In ‘Barbaric Beauty’ we follow a completely different path by focussing on Telemann’s Polish style. At least, this is how he described the pieces he wrote after discovering the music played along the Polish-Hungarian border. It was at the beginning of his career, when he was just 25 years old, that he heard sounds that were to inspire him throughout his life. Telemann writes in his autobiography: “In 1704 I was appointed Chapelmaster in Sorau (Zary) by His Excellence Count Erdmann von Promnitz. When the Court resided for six months in Plesse and Krakow, I became acquainted with both Polish music and the music of the Hanaks. This in all its barbaric beauty. (The Hanaks are Czechs from Moravia) The music came from four different instruments: an extremely shrill violin, a Polish bagpipe, a bass trombone and a regal. On one occasion I even heard thirty-six bagpipes and eight violins together. One can hardly imagine the brilliant ideas the wind players and violinists brought forth during the improvisations at moments when the dancers were allowed to rest.” It is striking that Telemann was explicitly interested in the impro visa- tions, mentioning the ‘brilliant ideas’ for which there was only occasion when the band could free itself of the tight metre and musical require- ments of the dance. Telemann wrote with enthusiasm: “If you were to write down all that was played there, after a week you would have enough ideas for the rest of your life. If you know how to turn it to your own advantage, there is so much good to be had from this music.” He also wrote: “Later I wrote large-scale concertos and trios in this style, which I subsequently gave an Italian look to by alternating Adagios and Allegros.” Unfortunately, it cannot be established precisely what Telemann heard there. Although it cannot be confirmed, the 30 dances from the manuscript Danse d’Polonie which he wrote himself may well be literal quotes. What we do know is that the pieces from this so-called Polish dance book, which so inspired him, were clearly recycled later. They turn up in orchestral suites, for example in TWV 55:D3 where we hear the ‘Hanaquoise’, which he called Polonie in his manuscript. In TWV 55:B8 we find the ‘Mezzetin en Turc’, which he marked très vite in the Danse d’Polonie.

Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) the son of a clergyman, was self-taught in music and became the most prolific composer of his time. Melodious, surprising turns of phrase, virtuosity, flashes of humor, and exciting dialogue between piano and oboe. He progressed rapidly and within a year he was ap- pointed harpsichord teacher to the Duke of Burgundy and most of the royal children. In 1696 Louis xiv ennobled him and a few years later he was made a Chevalier of the Lateran order. In the early part of the 18th century he composed a considerable amount of church music for Versailles. At this time he also regularly composed chamber music for the Concerts du Di- manche series at Court and by 1717 he had officially succeeded d’Anglebert the younger as the Ordinaire de la Musique. He had been exerting his influence and control of this position for some time before 1717 and had already succeeded in having a number of outstanding musici- ans in his charge, including the viola da gamba player Forqueray and the violinist Rebel. By 1710 Couperin’s contemporaries were already referring to him as Le Grand and many of his disciples had already dedicated compositions to him. In 1713 he took out a privilège du Roi in order to publish his works, printing his first book of harpsichord pieces, which had been written over the previous fifteen or so years. In 1716 he published his theoretical treatise L’Art de toucher de la Claveçin and his second book of harpsichord pieces then followed in 1717. After the death of Louis xiv (1715) he published some of his instrumental works under the title Les Goûts Réünis and the success of these encouraged him to publish some of his earlier sonatas originally from around 1692 and in the Italian style. Antonio Vivaldi made the eighty-mile journey northeast of Venice to attend on him. It is not known whether the two men had met before, although the previous year Vivaldi had dedicated his twelve concertos Op.9, entitled La cetra (The Lyre), to Charles, suggesting they probably had met or at least corresponded. This encounter seems to have been the highlight of an otherwise disappointing trip for the Emperor, judging by two letters which survive from a Venetian Abbe?, Antonio Conti, to a French lady, Mme de Caylus. On 23 September Conti wrote, ‘the Emperor is not too happy with his Trieste. . . . He has spent a lot of time discussing music with Vivaldi. It is said that he has spoken with him more in two weeks than he has with his own ministers in two years. . . . His appetite for music is very strong.’ And in another letter Conti wrote, ‘the Emperor has given Vivaldi a large amount of money together with a chain and gold medallion.’

Cash and baubles were no doubt welcome to Vivaldi but probably not the reward he was hoping for: to become one of Charles’s court composers. Of all the arts, the Emperor favoured music in particular. Like his grandfather, Ferdinand III, and father, Leopold I, Charles was an able composer, mainly of church music, and a generous patron. He funded the publication of Gradus ad Parnassum (1725), one of the most influential works of western music theory by his composition teacher and Kapellmeister, Johann Joseph Fux, and he was skilled enough as a performer to direct performances of operas by Fux and the vice Kapellmeister Antonio Caldara. Charles maintained the Habsburg tradition of employing Italian artists at court, and Venetians in particular. As well as Caldara, Marc Antonio Ziani, Fux’s predecessor as Kapell- meister, was from Venice, as were Sebastiano Ricci and Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini, who painted altarpieces for the Emperor’s new Karlskirche, and the court poets Apostolo Zeno and Pietro Metastasio. Vivaldi no doubt had high hopes that he might join his countrymen in Vienna, perhaps with a dual role as player and composer, such as that of Francesco Bartolomeo Conti. Conti, no relation to the letter writer above, was for many years the principal theorbo player as well as court composer. Holding two posts meant receiving two stipends, which raised Conti’s income higher than that of Fux himself. It was not to be, however. Perhaps Vivaldi’s compositional style was too modern for the Emperor’s—or Fux’s—conservative tastes. When a new court composer was appointed a few years later, Matteo Palotta was chosen, a master of the stile antico. This was the ‘old style’ of Palestrina, ‘the brightest light in Music, whose memory I shall never cease to honour with the greatest reverence’ (Fux, Gradus).

Anyone performing handel’s Concertos Op. 3 has to tackle a basic problem – the musical text. the edition published by John Walsh in 1734 is by no means perfect, and is regarded with musicological head-scratching. there are no complete autograph manuscripts to help show us the way with these works. today Walsh is generally held in low esteem, criticised for shoddy editions, and equally shoddy business practices. And why not? these six concertos represent one of the glories of the instrumental repertoire.
Each ‘new’ version seems to require justification, particularly those on period instruments. too much ink has been spilled because of this, and more and more heated (and sometimes irrelevant) debate over historical and instrumentation issues ensues. the Brandenburg story should be very familiar to the Reader.1 these concertos were presented in a fair-copy full score, dated 24 march 1721, to the margrave of Brandenburg. Using this simple fact as a point of discussion, here is a small sample of the debate:- the manuscript is presumed to have been a gift to stimulate Bach’s advancement with the margrave. there is no acknowledgement of receipt or thanks whatsoever from the margrave. the ‘job application’ seems thus to have failed. the manuscript remained in the margrave’s library, unloved and unplayed.

During 2004, three hundred years after the death of Biber, The English Concert gave the first European performances in modern times of the Missa Christi resurgentis. Their subjective intensity, a style referred to then and now as Empfindsamkeit (ultra-sensitivity), was perhaps the com-poser’s own elixir of youth. Bach’s life falls neatly into three distinct periods.
He learned his trade literally at his father’s elbow, as a student not just of organ, harpsichord, clavichord and composition but of all the skills necessary to be a complete Kapellmeister. He sat at his father’s table copying out material for the Sunday cantata or the weekly Collegium Musicum concerts and met the many colourful characters who visited the Bachs’ Leipzig home. At the age of twenty-four, in 1738, he became harpsichordist to Crown Prince Frederick, later ‘the Great,’ King of Prussia.
It is hard to imagine how disorientating this change must have been to the young musician who had served his apprenticeship under Johann Sebastian. He found himself surrounded by colleagues, notably Johann Joachim Quantz, Carl Heinrich Graun and the Benda brothers, whose reputations and salaries far exceeded his own but whose talents were clearly inferior. In addition, Bach was now the subject of a royal employer whose tyranny extended to censoring his musicians’ works on matters of musical style. As Burney wrote, “with respect to the general and national style of composition and performance [in Berlin], it seems at present, to be formed so much upon one model [i.e. the King’s], that it precludes all invention and genius.” But perhaps the strangest change Bach had to cope with was the almost complete lack of interest Frederick showed in church music, to which generations of Bachs had devoted their lives.

George Frideric Handel arrived in England towards the end of 1710, encouraged by a group of music lovers excited by the extraordinary success he had achieved with his opera Agrippina in Venice. His baptismal certificate was issued on 12 August. His father, Martin Biber, worked as a hunter at the Wartenberg Court and was thus a subject of the dynasty of the Counts of Liechtenstein. This noble family originated in Tyrol (Castel Corn, near Bozen/Bolzano) and came to Bohemia and Moravia during the sixteenth century. We can only guess how and where Heinrich Ignaz received his first music lessons. During his schooldays, two teachers – which is to say musicians – were active in Wartenberg/Str.z. But perhaps the term can embrace a more shadowy side of life, the way Mahler or Bartók used it. Not so long ago, one British politician blighted the career of a colleague by saying that there was something of the night about him. This recording explores the night-music of Mozart’s soul.
On 10th August, 1787, in the catalogue he kept of his own works, Mozart wrote Eine kleine Nachtmusik beside a piece in G major for strings—not so much a title as a description: ‘a little piece of night music.’ It is not known why he wrote it, whether to fulfil a commission or for a private occasion, though it is safe to assume that it was performed. In those days few pieces were written without a particular function in mind. The manuscript shows signs of extreme haste, even for Mozart. For example, doublings are written in shorthand, and large sections of the piece, where the music repeats itself, are simply left out with written instructions about where to find the missing measures. It is this in particular which shows how quickly Mozart was working, since he often took the opportunity to alter small details the second time around. Although his haste is visible, it is not audible, and the work is widely accepted as one of the great masterpieces of the genre. By looking at the other works on this recording, an insight into why this is so can be found.
The Serenata Notturna (k. 239) is the earliest piece here, written in Salzburg early in 1776. Serenades were often grand affairs, sometimes one hour long and involving as large an orchestra as could be mustered. A few months later in his ‘Haffner’ Serenade Mozart used flutes, oboes, bassoons, horns and trumpets, as well as a prominent solo violin. So why this Serenata uses the unlikely (and unique) combination of strings and timpani is a mystery, one which probably raised a smile as well as a quizzical eyebrow from Mozart’s employer, Archbishop Colloredo. Despite the restricted orchestration, and the fact that he was becoming increasingly frustrated as a middle-ranking musician in a provincial Austrian court, Mozart’s creativity runs riot. He draws a rich variety of colours from the small instrumentarium, one moment a full-blooded forte, the next a playful pizzicato. At the start, all the parts combine to deliver a pompous, public fanfare. Then the tutti give way while a string quartet of two violins, a viola and a violone (here a small three-string double-bass) play a more private concert. This rocking between public and private, high and low music runs through the whole piece, notably in the (public) Menuetto and (private) Trio. On paper the tutti / solo division is reminiscent of a baroque concerto grosso, but the music sounds closer to an operatic scene, such as the party in Don Giovanni. In the final Rondeau Mozart interrupts the flow with a cheeky pastiche of Handel’s pseudo-tragic style, and then immediately brings the music back to the here-and-now by breaking into a low folk tune (as yet unidentified but not unlike the ‘Strasbourg’ tune in the finale of the G-major violin concerto, written just a few months earlier).

The present three violin concertos were completed during the last four months of 1775. After the success of his operas La finta giardiniera in Munich in January, 1775, and Il Ré pastor home in Salzburg in April, Mozart was now back in his seat, earning a modest salary as a violinist at the Episcopal court. His employer Count Hieronymus Colloredo was rarely helpful when it came to the Mozart family’s extra-mural activities but he was a keen amateur violinist, so performing entertaining violin concertos was perhaps one of the better ways to keep in his good books. In addition, Mozart was working alongside the Vice- Kapellmeister, his father Leopold, who had taught him the violin and whose letters are peppered with parental pressure on the subject. “Every time I come home I succumb to a feeling of melancholy, for as I draw near to our house I always half expect to hear the sound of your violin.” (6 October, 1777). “Have you been practising the violin at all while in Munich?” (9 October, 1777). “Your violin is hanging on its nail, of that I’m sure” (a reference to a common way of storing a violin in the 18th century, by tying a ribbon to its scroll and hanging it on the wall; 27 November, 1777). During a visit to Vienna in May, 1781, Mozart had, according to his version of events, resigned – or more likely was sacked – from his position as court organist and concertmaster to the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, Hieronymus Colloredo. His father, Leopold, also a Colloredo employee, was none too pleased for many reasons. As a respected servant of the court he was embarrassed by his son’s behaviour and possibly jealous of his new-found freedom. He was especially unhappy that the now homeless Mozart had taken lodgings in Vienna with the Weber family, of which Leopold was endlessly suspicious. Mozart had known the Webers since 1777, when he had fallen in love with their eldest daughter, a coloratura soprano named Aloysia. (Although she turned him down, he went on to compose much wonderful music for Aloysia. In 1780 she married Joseph Lange, the painter who was to leave unfinished one of the most famous, and certainly the most poignant, portraits of Mozart.) With a roof over his head, Mozart could pursue a freelance career in Vienna. Performing, composing and publishing might all further one’s reputation, and Mozart did all three tirelessly, but they did not necessarily generate income. The first performances of Die Entfu?hrung aus dem Serail, for example, were a critical and box-office success but earned the composer himself only one hundred ducats. To put this in perspective, he had been paid fifty ducats by Emperor Joseph II for playing in a competition with Muzio Clementi. (Evidently both the Emperor and Mozart felt the Italian was well beaten: “He doesn’t have a penny’s worth of taste or feeling – he is a mere Mechanicus,” wrote Mozart to his father.) 1 Other high profile concerts, such as for the Wiener Tonku?nstler-Sozietät, a charity that supported the widows and orphans of musicians, raised his profile but no money. And although the list of princes, barons and counts whom Mozart counted amongst his friends and admirers is an impressive one, he was forced to rely primarily on teaching. “I’ve three lady pupils – that brings 18 ducats a month – for I don’t teach [a series of ] 12 lessons any more, but on a monthly basis. – I have learned the hard way that they often skip whole weeks – now, whether they learn or not, each must pay me 6 ducats.”

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons are amongst his most innovative and extraordinary compositions. Here, they come together to convey the diverse musical landscape at such an excitingly rich and creative era.

Monteverdi’s “Vespro della Beata Vergine” was published in 1610, together with his “Missa in illo tempore”. This edition is his first important collection of music for the Catholic service. It is assumed that the composer hoped that this would help him to earn a position under the protective wings of the Church; and it payed off for him in 1613, the year in which he was named maestro di cappella of the San Marco Basilica in Venice. There is much uncertainty about how this “Vespro” came into being. In fact, this is a collection of various pieces which were most likely not conceived together with the goal of creating a self-contained unity; there are for example two Magnificat compositions in a row; of course only one of these should be chosen by the performer.

In Vivaldi’s oeuvre, there is only one composition of which we are totally certain it was written for Pelegrina. Above the manuscript of the Sonata for oboe, violin, chalumeau and organ, RV 779, Vivaldi wrote the names of the girls for whom the piece was intended: Pelegrina dall’ Oboè, Prudenza dal Contralto, Candida dalla Viola and Lucietta Organista*. But since Pelegrina was by far the most accomplished oboist when Vivaldi worked at the Ospedale (the only other oboist mentioned in the archives is one Susanna, in 1726), we can assume that a number of the oboe concertos featured on this CD were also written for, and performed by, Pelegrina. And that is why I would like to dedicate this recording to her.

To you, Pelegrina dall’ Oboè, who came into this world with so little; but who managed to breathe colour and lustre into life with that beautiful, yet so obstinate, double-reed instrument; and who inspired one of the greatest Baroque composers to create little gems we can enjoy to this very day.
