The other, discovered and organised more recently, belongs to the collection of music manuscripts of the former Jesuit Mission of the Moxos Indians, in Bolivia. Copies of the latter were still being produced up to the 1990s. It is difficult to maintain that such a large number of works was to be found in each of the Jesuit settlements. It is possible that the musical libraries of the guaran settlements were even larger. Since these documents have disappeared altogether, we can neither confirm nor deny their existence. On the other hand, in the archives of the missionary post in Moxos, where 4000 sheets of music are kept, the instrumental works do not exceed 20 and are generally fragments of sonatas, concertos and dances. No instrumental music has been found, not even fragments. In among the quartets, dances, partitas, concertos, symphonies and sonatas belonging to the music collection of Chiquitos, the latter, numbering approximately 110 compositions, are the best known. In most cases, the copyist left no details regarding the composer. The ones of which the composer is mentioned or recognized by the musicologists that have studied the music collection of Chiquitos, were written by Arcangelo Corelli, Antonio Vivaldi, Niccol Jommelli, Ignazio Balbi, Pietro Locatelli, Giovanni Battista Sammartini, Nicola Calandro and Domingo Poretti. Ten sonatas that were attributed to Arcangelo Corelli make him the most popular and prolific composer of instrumental music in the ancient Jesuit missionary posts. Later, Rachmaninov himself was to write: \u003cem\u003e“Even though it seems unbelievable, this therapy truly helped me. I was already starting to compose by summer!”\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\nAlthough they were separated by the crisis which interrupted his work, both the second Piano Concerto and the “Moments Musicaux” date from the composer's early period, during which he was active primarily as a composer rather than a pianist. This explains the character of the second Piano Concerto, which partakes of both chamber music and symphony, despite the dazzling virtuosity of the solo piano part.\r\n\r\nUnlike many of Rachmaninov's other works, the concerto, dedicated in thanks to his doctor, was never revised after the first performance-another indication of the ease and freshness with which Rachmaninov went to work. The formal simplicity (e.g., in the first movement: main theme in the minor, second theme in the relative major, the development section laid out as a large-scale accelerando with gradually increasing dynamics, recapitulation with both themes, although given out with different instrumentation) is just as classically conceived as the choice of tonalities for the three movements (opening and closing movements in C minor, the slow central movement in E major, just as in Beethoven's 3rd Piano Concerto, except for the introductory modulations), and the balanced alternation between the freely improvisatory, martially strict, and dancelike, as well as between polyphonic and homophonic writing. In addition we have included a number of solo organ pieces from the Bolivian archives which James Johnstone recorded on the restored anonymous 18th century Blockwerk organ in the Mission Church of Santa Ana de Velasco. This is the first European recording on this remarkable instrument, its raw sound recorded here for posterity.The music on this volume differs considerably from the other two Channel Classics recordings (CCS 22105 \u0026amp; CCS 24806) as it mainly showcases Arakaendar Bolivia, the choir I set up in 2005. They continue to thrive and have shown tremendous commitment and determination in preparing this challenging and varied programme. In a letter addressed to Goethe, Zelter explained that the 25 members of his Liedertafel were accustomed to sit down at a well-furnished table for a sumptuous dinner followed by an evening of singing. Zelter’s group preferred original works, so freshly composed that the ink was still wet. The best musical contribution was then duly rewarded with a medal, a congratulatory toast, or a laurel wreath. Behind this convivial atmosphere there was a loftier goal: the stimulation and promotion of German poetry and music. Personally, I have often been asked this question, but I was never able to limit myself to a single composer. I came very close to choosing one, however, during my preparations for this CD, in fact very close indeed. For all that this choice may appear to be forced, subjective, and of a temporary nature, it is not. Not when one thinks of how many extraordinary piano and chamber music works, songs and symphonies Franz Schubert created during his all-too-brief life. This way of thinking sheds a different light on the choice, and justifies it. Nevertheless, Schubert avoided two larger forms: the opera and the concerto. The reasons for this could have included his character, which was in part deeply introverted, as well as his distaste for virtuosity, which he saw as a kind of exhibitionism of the soloist in front of the orchestra which accompanied him; in the same way, the frequently banal or superficial libretti of operas may have put him off. In no way did this indicate a lack of dramatic ability, for his music is not only exciting, but goes far beyond, it penetrates deeply into the listener's senses. He lived in an unusual time. He lived in the interval between the Viennese Classical Style and Romanticism, in a world which was stylistically completely new, different, and exceptional. Like the previous five, this CD contains pieces from the 'Pchs de Vieillesse' or 'Sins of Old Age'. These are free character sketches, unconventional and free of any trace of pretension. Sometimes they are facetious, sometimes sweet, sometimes light and sometimes tragicomic, but the composer always wears a sly wink. They are bel canto suffused with irony, mockery and self-mockery hand in hand, in a setting of honesty and disarming innocence. Satire returns with the titles of the pieces and the albums to which they belong. The first five pieces on this CD are part of the 'Album de Chaumire' (Cottage Album). The last five pieces on this CD are part of the 'Album de Chteau' (Castel Album) 'How sweet!' the listener, the musician, and the unsuspecting publisher think, in the expectation of pretty little pieces about castles and country life. However, very much in Rossini's manner, not one of the pieces has anything whatsoever to do with these themes. For example, in the first piece, 'Un Cauchemar' (A nightmare), medieval knights and rolling fields are conspicuous by their absence. However, there is in fact an intimate, cantabile introduction, which explodes into ecstatic excitement. I wish my own nightmares were this cheerful! In the next piece, 'Plain-Chant Chinois' (Chinese Chorale), a bit of Chinoiserie peers round the corner. Chinoiserie was the rather naive and romantic vision of the orient which prevailed in 19th century France. At home I have a Steinway, on which I learnt to play, and it is a wonderful instrument. When I was about twenty I was fortunate enough to get to know authentic instruments: romantic grand pianos by Érard and Pleyel and older ones by Graf, Streicher etc.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This was a new world of timbres and expressive potential. Naturally, I took the inspiration and revelations provided by these instruments to the modern grand piano. A stimulating crossfertilisation of expressive and interpretative possibilities was the result. In this way it became increasingly natural for me to play the same repertoire on both old and new instruments. In my desire to share this fascinating crossfertilisation with others, I found the answer to the above question: a double CD with the same works on authentic and new instruments. This is particularly interesting in the case of Ravel, since the two types of instrument not only existed in his lifetime, but were actually used by him. The ‘new’ instrument used for the recording is a Steinway. ‘New’ is in inverted commas because the Steinway grand has hardly changed since the late nineteenth century. The authentic instrument on this CD is an Érard – one of the most celebrated makers of the nineteenth century, and immortalised by Liszt. Ravel frequently gave his recitals on a Steinway, while at home he used an Érard when composing.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe different tonal worlds of the two instruments result primarily from the parallel stringing and largely wooden frame of the Érard, and the cross-stringing and steel frame (to accommodate the higher tension of the strings and case) of the Steinway. The sound of the Érard is thus more stringy and dies away differently, while the various registers are more individual. The Steinway glories in the resonance of the strings and case, and the mélange of the notes. Since relationships between the immense richness of colour and timbre in Ravel’s music are therefore different, this is naturally of influence on the interpretative choices made by the performer. The pedalling, dynamic transitions, balance between the parts, harmonic colours, build-up of tension, tempos – all these must be approached differently depending on the instrument used. This is clearest of all in relation to tempos: none of the recorded pieces have the same length on the two CDs. For a musician and pianist this is an inevitable, inspiring, instructive, and in particular a delightful experience in the process of developing one’s interpretation. Nonetheless, Dvorák’s fame soon became unparalleled, in the first place probably because his music is such a successful synthesis of Czech - or, more accurately, Bohemian - folk music and Western techniques. And no doubt also because Dvorák was such a ‘natural’ composer: his music sounds so self-evident, so natural, music such as in Western Europe only Schubert was known for. It was precisely this aspect of Dvorák’s art of which Brahms was rightly jealous.\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eOn the other hand, Dvorak had such huge admiration for his older German- Viennese colleague, who had helped him so much and had even organized the first publication of his first volume of Slavonic Dances, that in his 7th Symphony, for example, he quoted a melody from Brahms’ 2nd Piano Concerto. \u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eIn terms of form Dvorák’s music does indeed belong totally within the Western tradition: we can draw a straight line from Mozart to him, via Schubert and Brahms, Schubert being the most important composer of songs and folksong-like melodies, and Brahms being above all the master builder, the direct heir of Beethoven. And yet neither of these possessed that special quality which made Dvorak so unique, namely the ability to write totally natural melodies, which at one and the same time, and in all modesty, were capable of accompanying another melody, but also, just as easily and entirely independently, of producing amazing contrapuntal constructions, and, on top of all that, of inviting everyone to dance. \u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eBrahms once remarked with some envy that he wished he could even write a tune such as Dvorak could write just for an accompanying voice... The rapidly growing number of smallish ensembles with combinations of instruments for which very little music is available has even proved to be an added incentive in this direction, leading towards a new development within classical music. Not infrequently, a particular interest is shown in lieder which were originally written for solo voice with piano accompaniment. Sometimes the composers themselves put a small instrumental ensemble or even a complete symphony orchestra in the place of the original piano part, but it is not unusual for others to undertake this task.\u003cbr\u003eOne of the composers who adapted a piano score for a complete orchestra was Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), and the orchestration for his Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer, written in 1883-1885) followed the piano version so quickly that the very first performance in 1886 immediately featured the orchestra. In 1920, Arnold Schoenberg created a new version for flute, clarinet, harmonium, piano, string quintet and percussion, and this instrumentation was taken by the ensemble KONTRASTE as the starting point for a project called Wanderer, in collaboration with the tenor Christoph Prégardien. It revolves around Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen as well as sixteen lieder by Robert Schumann, which were arranged for this project by Marcus Reißenberger. The idea was to retain the liveliness heard in the piano accompaniment while at the same time creating an instrumental colour palette that far surpassed it. Given that metre is such an evident characteristic of any music, and since triple time is something that – for us bipeds – will always be a dance, this central tenet of Christian doctrine had considerable (and possibly unintended) consequences for the character of sacred music. Bach, in addition to references to the Trinity (3 and its powers 9 and 27) and Christ’s age (33), also gave significance to numbers derived from his own name (BACH=14, 41=JSBACH, where A=1, B=2 etc.). Composers at the time did nothing so gladly as arranging Bach’s music and adapting it to their personal taste. Later, even Arnold Schoenberg ventured into Bach’s music. Renowned as a composer at home and abroad, Carissimi was memorably described by his successor Pitoni as ‘very frugal in his domestic circumstances, very noble in his manners towards his friends and others ... of tall stature, thin, and inclined to melancholy’. Carissimi was born in the small town of Marino, fifteen miles from the centre of Rome. We know little about his musical education, but as the youngest son of a cooper, he was presumably the beneficiary of church schooling often made available to boys with strong singing voices. After working in Tivoli and Assisi as organist and maestro di cappella respectively, he was appointed to the Collegio Germanico in Rome at the age of just 23.\u003cbr\u003eVery quickly thereafter he became maestro di cappella, a prestigious post previously held by Tomás Luis de Victoria. Conditions at the well-funded Jesuit college were excellent and Carissimi stayed for the remainder of his life, during which time he became arguably Europe’s most admired composer. His fame grew not through publishing or self-promotion, but via countless hand-written copies of his music being transported across the continent by his many students and admirers. From Purcell’s London to Buxtehude’s Lübeck, the work of Carissimi came to be regarded by the cognoscenti as the epitome of fine vocal style. When 17th-century musicians spoke of music in ‘the latest Italian manner’ it would have been the style defined by Carissimi they often had in mind. This fame and respect led naturally to offers of employment, including one enticing opportunity to succeed Monteverdi as maestro di cappella at San Marco in Venice. With the exception\u003cbr\u003eof the Scherzo in C flat for the Sonata F.A.e. he made his first violin solo work known to the public only at the age of forty five with the publication of the Concerto in D major, op. 77.  Cheered by the great success he had had in the summer of that year, 1878, he set to work composing the first of his three splendid violin sonatas. They are the only ones we know, as three previous similar sonatas were destroyed by the composer himself. Brahms wrote these three masterpieces during three happy and fruitful summer holidays which he
