Sir William Walton's Sonata for Strings is a piece that the Amsterdam Sinfonietta has performed with great success both at home and abroad. For this reason we felt that a recording of this work was an obvious choice. It is a powerful composition which gives a string orchestra the opportunity to display all of its discipline, virtuosity, and tone-color. We chose Beethoven's string quartet op. 135 as a companion piece for this recording because of our admiration for the greatness of this final string quartet. The only other recording of this work to date is the Vienna Philharmonic's legendary recording of op. 135 in an arrangement for string orchestra, conducted by Leonard Bernstein. In this earlier recording, the work is performed with a very large group of strings, and Beethoven's composition is realized on a symphonic scale. One important characteristic of the Amsterdam Sinfonietta is that the orchestra is conceived in terms of a string quintet, i.e. a small- scale setting. The orchestra has deliberately remained small in size for the exact purpose of preserving the intimate character of works such as those by Walton or Beethoven. In this way we are able to perform with a maximum of flexibility and articulation. During the recording sessions, attention was devoted not only to the dynamic levels in the score but an effort was also made to give different colors to the various motives. The Amsterdam Sinfonietta strives for the greatest possible expression in this way. Our choice for the combination of these two works is due more to the differences in their musical language than to their similarities.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcwlYMLzcSU

Antonio Vivaldi (1678 1741) composed around 550 concertos. Most of these were written for the Ospedale della Piet, a kind of orphanage which was home for the female offspring of noblemen and their mistresses. Even after leaving Venice he supplied concertos and directed performances for this Institute, where the musical standards were the highest in Venice. After listening to many of these works we soon realized that the guitar concertos, originally written for mandolin and lute, are amongst Vivaldis best. Besides the double concerto for two mandolins we decided to arrange two solo concertos, originally written for lute and mandolin. In these arrangements the second guitar takes the role of the continuo, which would usually be played on the harpsichord. When listening to the mandolin and guitar versions, we found that the same piece played on the mandolin sounds a lot clearer. This is not only due to the fact that the register of the mandolin lays an octave higher than the guitars. Arpeggio-like formations sound harp-like on the guitar but not on the mandolin. Traditionally guitarists play these figurations by holding all the notes of the chord with the left hand, producing this harp like sound. These formations played on the mandolin, violin or on wind instruments would sound a lot more like melodies, where notes do not overlap and you can hear the jump between the notes. It is possible to achieve the same on the guitar by lifting the fingers of the left hand just like other instrumentalist would do. Once we listened to this clearer sound we nearly always preferred this technique. We also tried to play as much as possible with rest stroke, (a guitarist technique of the right hand) as it sounds louder and fuller, which is useful specially when playing with or against other instruments......

What I really wanted was a motor scooter, if I remember correctly. But on that memorable day when I turned 13, it turned out to be something very different- a 45-rpm record, with a touching family portrait of Wolfgang, Nannerl, and Papa Leopold on the cover of the pretty little square case. The contents of that case were even more impressive: Mozart's Oboe Quartet! What wonderful music that was for me, and how beautiful the oboe sounded: open, warm, expressive, and piercing. It went straight to my childish soul. That was when I decided to start playing the oboe, and that's what I'm still doing today. Remarkable, really, that Mozart: he only lived for 35 years and he wasn't someone who immediately made an unforgettable impression when he walked into a room. In his day he was respected, in a sense he was famous. But there were composers who had more successful careers. He composed a staggering quantity of music, all of it in a style that you could describe as being of its time. Some 250 years later, it's a period in history that might or might not appeal to you. The appeal of a world of lace, periwigs, and Meissen porcelain. But the strange thing is that when you hear Mozart's voice 250 years later, that appeal becomes quite powerful, 250 years. Back then, as a 13 year old, I was hooked, and I'm not the only one: at the very moment that I'm writing this, we are all celebrating Mozart's 250th birthday. All you have to do is turn on the radio and you can hear Mozart. Either there's a wonderful opera, or one of his 41 symphonies, 27 string quartets, serenades, piano sonatas, incidental stage works, contradances, whatever. Of course there may be a potboiler here or there, but still, strangely enough, nearly all of Mozart's works are masterpieces, soaring far above the prevailing Stamitz-and Salieri atmosphere....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZxYCVTTCco

Unlike his great contemporary Mozart, who died at 35 in 1791, Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) lived long enough to be feted as a musical colossus in his own lifetime. Johann Ferdinand Ritter von Schnfeld, author of A Yearbook of the Music of Vienna and Prague in 1796, holds Haydn in similarly high esteem, waxing lyrical about his string quartets: [they] are full of bewitching harmonies, and have this special quality of immediately attracting ones attention, holding it and moving on, as in a labyrinth, through flowering meadows, past babbling brooks, alongside roaring streams.

String quartet nr. 2 in A On 2 September 1944, Shostakovich wrote the last note of his second string quartet in a country house near Ivanovo. Two months later, the Beethoven-quartet played the première. The second string quartet was created after the famous second piano trio and was written at a terrific pace. Shostakovich dedicated this work to his good friend Vissarion Shebalin, the director of the Moscow Conservatory at that time. Like his great example Beethoven, Shostakovich did not publish his first string quartet until he was thirty. In the preceding years, he thoroughly studied the string quartets by Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn. According to his students, he could effortlessly quote from this classic literature. The piece opens with an energetic Ouverture that in its form and counterpoint has been entirely fashioned after the forementioned classic examples. This quartet is primarily exceptional because of the longest and slow movement of the piece. The movement consists of a Romance enclosed by two recitatives. These long and grievous episodes of the solo violin in recitative form are accompanied by static, low chords. One can directly associate this movement with sacred music, in which the recitative technique is so common. In the Waltz, a soft legato theme develops, first in the celli and later in the violins, over a waltz pattern to a turbulent percussion part full of changes of pace. The movement concludes in pianissimo with the return to a clear three-four time in which the altos ‘turn off the light’. The last movement, Theme with variations, starts from an adagio. Per variation, both the tempo and the drama increase. The theme ultimately simmers down in an adagio in E flat. The ten works together comprising Op. 1, 2 and 'Op. 0' date from his 20s (c. 1758 - 1761); and the final nine works of Op. 76 (1797), 77 (1799) and 103 (1803) were written after the 'London' Symphonies, and in close proximity to his oratorios, The Creation and The Seasons. The stylistic journey Haydn took from beginning to end is striking indeed, on account of the extended time period involved and the inevitable changes in musical taste across Europe. The Op. 20 set (1772) is generally regarded as Haydn's first 'mature' contribution to the string quartet genre. Two early, unauthorized editions ensured widespread dissemination - from La Chevardière (1774) and Hummel (Amsterdam and Berlin, 1779). The title page of the latter, in fact, with its engraving of a blazing midday sun, was directly responsible for the nickname that accrued to the set ('Sun' quartets); equally, the order in which the quartets appear in this edition established the order in which they have usually appeared in editions ever since. Op. 20 was widely admired in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries-by Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms (who owned the autograph scores) among others-and retained a prominent place in the twentieth-century concert hall as well....

This is ‘Vivere’. When he set off to study law in Leipzig, he purposefully left all instruments, music and manuscript paper behind. However, as he recalled in his memoirs, when his roommate uncovered in his underwear a psalm he had set to music, his true vocation as a musician was never questioned again. Exposure to a large cross-section of society in his travels and in the many eminent positions he secured during his lifetime enabled him to soak up the latest vogue in musical styles. For instance, as Kapellmeister under Count Promnitz in Sorau, one of the earliest posts he held, he was obliged to study and compose in the manner of the great French master, Jean Baptiste Lully. The immediate result was the completion of two hundred French 'Ouvertures' in just two years. (Handel remarked that his compatriot composed music with the kind of ease another might write a letter.) It is well documented that Telemann's contemporaries marveled at his command of the French, Italian and even Polish national musical idioms he incorporated into his works. The 'Paris' Quartets (1730) and 'Nouveaux Quatuors' (1738) are a fine example of his contribution to instrumental music in the Baroque era. While they reflect his mastery of Corelli's Italian Sonata/Concerto forms and Lully's French Suite influences, they also provide a departure point for the forward-looking conversational galant style........

Known worldwide as one of the purest acoustic direct DSD recordings the acoustic trio session began and ended on the same morning in the La Honda Hills above Hwy 1 (San Gregorio). This 4 hour session captured the sounds of 2 acoustic guitars and voices and an upright bass being played and sang within arm's length of the 3 musicians standing in a close circle.

The trademark minimal microphone approach taken by Elias in his previous SACDs was repeated here with microphones for each instrument and vocal. In addition, microphones in the ceiling and back walls were, as with "The Window" and "Crossing" used to capture the natural reverberation and ambient characteristics of the recording space. Only these tracks were used in the Pure DSD mix on the Sonoma workstation, avoiding all compression and outboard or digital effects. There are no overdubs or edits in these mixes.

This collection of original material from the independent acoustic singer-songwriter David Elias is a special organic, natural sounding set of pure DSD recordings created at the Slipperworld Studios in La Honda, California (www.slipperworld.net). These 14 tracks feature David Elias (acoustic/vocal/harmonica), Charlie Natzke (acoustic/vocal) and Chris Kee (upright bass, Blue Coast Records).

This Acoustic Trio session release was captured in the studio on a single day as a series of live takes without any edits or overdubs. It was recorded by Charlie Natzke to no more than 8 tracks directly to a Sonoma DSD Workstation using Meitner converters.

The essence of the performance is the ambient and acoustic nature of all the instruments and vocals including natural resonance, harmonics, decay, and microphone bleed and decay using minimal micing without any artificial or digital effects.

Acoustic Trio DSD Sessions was recorded on a sunny day among the redwoods with the windows open. The musicians recorded standing roughly arms length from each other in a small circle with no isolation. A pair of microphones were positioned overhead to capture a stereophonic image of "the room". This was used as the only source of natural reverb in the mix.

The songs were mixed as DSD using a Sony mixer card in the Sonoma workstation. These tracks have never left the original DSD format, even as analog conversions for mixing!

As a result, what you hear from these pure DSD master recordings are the natural live performances of the trio, as if you were standing or sitting with them in the studio during the session.

David Elias is a DSD and SACD pioneer. He self-produced the world's first hybrid 5.1 SACD "The Window" in 2002 and released it in 2003. It was a final nominee in the Surround Music Awards in Beverly Hills that year. His next stereo and 5.1 surround sound acoustic live session production "Crossing" had 3 final nominations at SMA in Beverly Hills including "Listener's Choice" and "Best Non-Orchestral Surround Mix". Stereophile magazine called this one "Extraordinary".

The songs on the "Acoustic Trio: DSD Sessions" disc are just as extraordinary. Perhaps more so since they are the live session tracks of a very simple trio consisting of 2 acoustic guitars, 2 voices and an upright bass. Expressions such as musical idiom, musical intonation, are not simply metaphors. But music is not identical with language. The resemblance points to something essential, but vague.” These words were written by Theodor W. Adorno, one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century – as well as a respectable composer. He goes on: “The resemblance to language extends from the whole work, the organized linking of significant sounds, right down to the single sound, the note as the threshold of merest presence, the pure vehicle of expression. The analogy goes beyond the organized connection of sounds and extends materially to the structures. The traditional theory of form employs such terms as sentence, phrase, segment, ways of punctuating - question, exclamation and parenthesis. Subordinate phrases are ubiquitous, voices rise and fall, and all these terms of musical gesture are derived from speech.” What follows constitutes our focus: “[Music] makes use of recurring ciphers. These were established by tonality. If tonality does not quite generate concepts, it may at least be said to create lexical items. […] Their unchanging identity has become sedimented like a second nature. This is why consciousness finds it so hard to bid farewell to tonality.”

Adorno’s words help us understand the conceptual framework for the musical phenomenon in Austro-German culture. They also make us see that, just like linguists consider language a living organism undergoing a continuous process of change, composers deal with their own ‘musical language’ in a similar manner.

When someone mentions Arnold Schönberg’s name, people tend to react defensively, irately or untrustingly. Many professional musicians and programmers, as well as the average music lover, share a deeply entrenched prejudice with regard to Schönberg. Below his name, we find music made up of strange, unintelligible and difficult sounds shaping compositions which are often considered inaccessible, unnecessary and, sometimes without reserve, simply ugly.

Against the backdrop of the crisis that musical language experienced at the dawn of the 20th century, when chromatism progressively overtook the tonal system, not many proposals were as illjudged as Arnold Schönberg’s. His new path was (and still is) perceived as a terribly radical breakthrough, though it simply aimed at providing an honest, unaffected answer to the Classical and Romantic heritage, both formally and conceptually.

Schönberg and his two leading disciples, Anton Webern and Alban Berg, began writing strictly tonal music. While they evolved as composers in the intellectually and aesthetically stimulating context of early 20th-century Vienna, the three realised that the principles of clarity and unity, considered the unchanging fundamentals of musical expression, could only be maintained and guaranteed by delving into the path initiated by Bach, that is, the progressive substitution of tonality and the two modes, Major and minor, by a superior mode. Departing from a deep analysis and an exhaustive knowledge of the evolution of the linguistic system, which had influenced musical creativity in Europe from the Renaissance up until 1900, Schönberg and his disciples continued developing their composing technique until they concluded that chromatism had conquered the tonal language, thus condemning it to its definitive death or its necessary transformation into a different system.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2QdEIVLp3c

After the successful releases of parts 1 and 2 (being named “CD of the month” by Dutch Radio and a praiseful review in Strad magazine), the Ruysdael Quartet continue their journey with part 3 of their Russian Generations series. Looking back on his early efforts in the summer of 1824, just a few months after he had completed his Death and the Maiden Quartet D.810, he seems to have had scant regard for them. Responding to a letter from his elder brother Ferdinand, who described his pleasure at rediscovering those youthful pieces, Schubert told him, ‘it would be better for you to keep to quartets other than mine, for there is nothing to them, except perhaps that you like them, as you like everything of mine’.

Schubert had made a brief return to string quartet writing at the end of 1820, in a manner that showed his ambition to produce a work more intense and dramatic than anything he had attempted in the genre before. But just as his first serious efforts to master the piano sonata some three years earlier had resulted in several aborted projects, so, too, the string quartet of 1820 was destined to remain unfinished. Over the string quartet, as over the piano sonata, loomed the giant figure of Beethoven (‘Who can do anything after Beethoven?’,2 Schubert once complained to his friend Josef von Spaun); and perhaps it was unwise of Schubert to have chosen to make his return to the quartet arena with a piece in C minor – the key Beethoven had made so much his own. In terms of its actual material the one portion of the work Schubert did manage to complete – the so-called Quarttetsatz, or ‘Quartet Movement’, D.703 – is of the highest quality, though it is possible that he remained dissatisfied with its unorthodox form. At any rate, he abandoned the score after having composed no more than forty bars of its slow movement. The opening Allegro was published for the first time in 1870, more than forty years after Schubert’s death, while the fragmentary slow movement did not appear in print until 1897, when it was issued in the value to that of the ‘Unfinished’ Symphony.

The Beethoven boom continues apace. No other composer so completely defines our concert life in each important genre – symphonies, concertos, and chamber music – and no other is subject to such ongoing scrutiny of his life and his art. Indeed, with the passing of time and a deeper knowledge of historical incident has come increased appreciation of his breathtaking, path-breaking innovation. Perceived as unique in his own day, he remains so in ours.
Beethoven’s early training with Christian Gottlob Neefe affirmed his abilities; the first published notice he received, in 1783, applauded a “youthful genius” (Thayer’s Life of Beethoven, p. 66) and Neefe praised him as “unquestionably now one of the foremost pianoforte players” (Thayer, op. cit, p. 113). His inevitable migration from Bonn to Vienna – the Imperial capital and artistically pre-emminent – came in 1792, when he was 21 years old.
Haydn, we know, taught him briefly in a mutually unsatisfying relationship, and there also was tutelage with Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, Kapellmeister at St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the city’s foremost teacher of counterpoint, and with Imperial Kapellmeister Antonio Salieri. But nothing learnt from these men can directly account for the transformations he later wrought in how music was composed and how it was perceived. Although primarily known as keyboard virtuoso at first, as a soloist and improviser second to none Beethoven quickly won acknowledgement as the composer who would inherit the mantle of Classicism – nobody assimilated as fully the ethos of Mozart and Haydn. Yet, from the start of his Viennese career, he set about consciously to undermine the premises and practices of his artistic progenitors and redefine music’s most fundamental assumptions.
Beethoven arrived in the Austrian capital with a modest portfolio; his earliest Viennese works, however, already displayed those characteristics we associate with the mature composer: his “longrange control over bold harmonic action,” (Grove, Beethoven entry, p. 379), including melodic concision, rhythmic vigor, and rigorous motivic development.

For a classical ensemble, improvisation is by no means an everyday pursuit. Yet during its 28-year history, Calefax Reed Quintet has repeatedly yielded to the temptation of extemporaneous performance. This often took place in the context of a pre-existing form, style or musical convention, and usually to a modest degree, for instance as part of a larger composition.

Calefax, rooted in the eight centuries of music history from which it draws its concert repertoire, is well aware that music, as a rule, is the end result of improvisation and is often notated solely as a favor to the music-reading player. The desire inherent in the group’s past and present goal – to dissect and then reconstruct existing music – has resulted in the countless arrangements the group has performed the world over for nearly three decades.

Each of the members is thus not only a performing but a creative artist as well, qualities that also define an improviser. Calefax underscores the importance of continuously exploring the link between these two styles of music-making. This has led to the music on this album - On the Spot.

A survey of music history shows that composers from distinctly disparate periods and locales had surprisingly similar goals in mind. Arranging music for an essentially fixed instrumentation has more than once brought musical parallels to the fore that otherwise might have gone unnoticed. In doing so, the quintet has created a practice for the playing, playful musician with befriended composers from all places and all times.

Perhaps this is most applicable to the trumpeter Eric Vloeimans. While he is otherwise difficult to categorize, Vloeimans, with his well-nigh vocal playing style, is undoubtedly the ideal person to guide five classical musicians in the world of improvisation. Along the way he also showed a hunger for the wealth of classical music, willingly allowing members of the quintet in turn to lead him, without sacrificing any of his own uniqueness.

Kinan Azmeh and Albert van Veenendaal both composed works especially for the marriage of these two types of musicians. Additionally, Ivar Berix and Raaf Hekkema were given free rein to delve into the extensive oeuvre of Eric Vloeimans.

Calefax Reed Quintet
Eric Vloeimans - Trumpet

Two quintets from two very different periods in Brahms’s life. The Piano Quintet is the work of a frustrated but ambitious man. The Clarinet-led piece is an autumnal serenade by an experienced master. The journey between these two milestones was one marked by criticism, soul searching and ultimate triumph. Weighed down by the inheritance Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, Brahms often hibernated from public statements in the more modest realm of trios, quartets and quintets. But his symphonic ambitions soon found voice, not only in the composition of his first symphony, which he began in 1862, but also in the rich and radical landscape of his chamber music. Conviction and talent paid off and by the time we revisit Brahms in 1891, the year of the Clarinet Quintet, aggravation becomes reflection. 1862 was a crucial year. As well as starting that first symphony, the 29-year-old Brahms travelled to Vienna for the first time. There he met Wagner. Although history relates that Brahms’s conservative abstraction was at the opposite end of the musical spectrum to Wagner’s extremely theatrical music, Brahms felt nothing but admiration for his compatriot.
While in the city, Brahms performed many of his new piano and chamber works, garnering the enviable support of Eduard Hanslick, the city’s most-feared music critic. The former, with its programmatic clout, and the latter’s ability to embrace politics and pomp made for nimble agents in the nation’s search for its soul. Bedrich Smetana and Anton.n Dvorak, its prime musical movers and shakers, dedicated their lives to these totemic art forms, while the string quartet trailed quietly behind. Intimate and domesticated, its four-way dialogue was seemingly not for the national stage. But as Dvorak and later Smetana demonstrated, their music was not always about the grand gesture.
These two composers are now inextricably linked, but during the latter part of the 19th century, Smetana and the younger Dvorak were considered total opposites. Smetana was the progressive figure, embracing Liszt and Wagner’s musical innovations and making them apparently indigenous. He was supported by a loyal band of followers called the mladoceši [young Czechs]. Dvorak, on the other hand, was seen as conservative, aligned with the staroceši [old Czechs]. His success in neighbouring German-speaking territories and his friendship with Brahms likewise did him few favours back at home.
To the outside world, such infighting was irrelevant and Dvorak was as much the quintessence of the Czech sound as Smetana. And it was in that spirit that Jeannette Thurber, the president of the National Conservatory of Music in America, invited Dvorak to New York in June 1891. Dvorak’s Slovansk. tance [Slavonic Dances] had done incredibly well in America and by offering him a new post at the Conservatory, Thurber hoped to provide not only a famous musician for her students but also one renowned for embracing a national style. It was just what was needed, Thurber felt, having always wanted America to have a musical idiom of its own. A generous salary secured Dvorak’s services in December 1891 and he arrived in New York on 26 September 1892.

The two short Emily Dickinson settings that open and close this programme of premiere recordings were commissioned by Conspirare and Craig Hella Johnson for this recording. They frame the programme rather like a compositional ‘inhalation’ and ‘exhalation’, a crescendo and decrescendo or a prelude and postlude. Densely textured, the music aims to hint at the myriad readings Dickinson’s surface-simple poetry yields in its many readers. Each setting uses a solo soprano and tenor, their voices referencing the polarities inherent in each poem (‘sun’ and ‘shade’; ‘love’ and ‘hate’).
The Ecstasies Above takes for its title a phrase found in the lyric poem, Israfel, by Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), which was first published in 1831 in The Southern Messenger. The poem is set in its entirety, with the exception of one stanza. Through his creative description of the angel, Israfel, and the heavens, Poe creates a virtuous image of the supernatural. Poe compares this heavenly vision to the harsh reality of human existence. Whilst the beauty of Israfel’s voice and lyre can silence even the moon and the stars in the heavens, Poe suggests that if Israfel were placed in an earthly environment, he would not sing with such zest. From the Koranic source of the name for the protagonist, the story is refashioned by Poe into an homage of ecumenicity to an all-encompassing angel of music.
Musically the score makes much use of textural variation between the three groups (full chorus, solo octet and string quartet). The tug of war between material that is almost childlike in its playfulness and sections that seem more sombre reflect my own thoughts on Poe’s oeuvre. As a European transplanted to North America, I am intrigued by the seeming disparity between the quasi-adulation of Poe’s poetry in Europe and the much cooler reaction he has always encountered in his native environs.

This recording, by two generations of musicians from the Kuijken family (Veronica, Sigiswald, Sara and Wieland Kuijken), with my wife Marleen Thiers, 2nd viola in the quintet, was made with so-called ‘modern’ instruments. This is true, at least as far as string quartets are concerned. Cherubini composed six, Donizetti nineteen, Bazzini (Puccini’s teacher at the Milan Conservatory) wrote six and, during the last thirty years of the century, Busoni produced two, Verdi one and even Puccini composed various pieces, including a recently ‘reviewed’ Quartet. However in the majority of cases, there are pieces that can be traced to the composers’ student years and, as such are rather scholastic. At the same time they do show the completeness of preparation that the young composers underwent, imposed by their respective teachers, who encouraged the study of chamber music literature of the classical Viennese period, even though many were attracted to melodrama. The lack of instrumental technique that they are sometimes criticised for even today, seems to be commonplace because the comparison with German contemporary composers is misleading as these came from a completely different tradition. Antonio Melchiori’s (1827-1897) captivating transcription for string quartet from Rigoletto, that we hear on this CD, indirectly but concretely confirms the value of Verdi’s training where, as revealed in the Quartet in E minor, he also uses counterpoint.
The arrangement for a solo instrument, particularly the piano, or for a chamber ensemble, from the most famous operatic scores, was routine procedure in the 19th century. This contributed to the popularity and therefore its extended use. Liszt’s paraphrases for the piano by Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi (including Rigoletto), Wagner etc and Muzio Clementi’s transcriptions for piano, flute, violin and cello of Mozart’s last six symphonies are further evidence. Melchiori was also active in transcribing many of Verdi’s works – Aroldo, Masked Ball, Traviata, Trovatore and especially Rigoletto – for solo flute or violin as well as string quartet, sometimes substituting the second violin with flute. Guided by a fine musical taste and a well developed instrumental technique, Melchiori selected more significant moments from Rigoletto, conferring on these a chamber quality that Verdi would call the most suited, when the scene on stage is aided by the dramatic and psychological quality of the moment. The distribution of the orchestral and vocal parts is always done well, especially where the timbre is concerned. In the Prelude, expertly interpreted by La Scala Quartet, the arrangement of the quartet harmony accentuates the original darkness of the motive of the curse. Another success is the instrumental rendition of “Questa o quella per me pari sono” (I\\2), where the Duke’s melody is given, not to the violin as one might have expected, but to the cello. As it unfolds, the ‘lightness’ of the sound seems to accentuate his fatuous character. Melchiori’s choice of the viola to represent Gilda’s heartbreaking expression of the deceitful meeting with that “giovine ..bello e fatale” (handsome and dangerous young man) is a refined one, while the accompaniment of the other three strings accentuates the expression of her suffering (II\\10).

In presenting our 7th SACD sampler, Channel Classics can look back at an exciting twelve years since the introduction of DSD technology. At the time, he readily wrote for the oboe, which was, by his own admission, his favorite instrument. Consequently, these sonatas were long considered to be works for two oboes. Yet, the use of double strings in the first movement of the third sonata leads us to believe that the handwritten composition was for oboe and violin, two richly contrasting voices with complementary tones.

For the past four years and thanks to the Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels’ mediation with his family, Handel had been a pupil of the Halle organist Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow. This enlightened mind had already given him a very European musical culture, teaching him to compose and play the organ according to the different musical styles of the time.

The trio sonatas HWV 380-385 are all composed following the model of the sonata da chiesa which had remained hugely fashionable since Corelli's works: in four movements, slow-fast-slow-fast; they demonstrate a very strong and rigorous knowledge of counterpoint.

Ensemble Amalthée
Welcome to the world of bass trombone chamber music. Out of Bounds contains interesting and little known 20th and 21st Century music for bass trombone in a chamber music setting.

The instrument is rarely heard as the soloist with chamber ensembles and most of the pieces on this album are rarely performed or have not previously been recorded. I am grateful to the omnipotent God for my fame, for it is only to Him that I owe everything. My sole wish is to offend neither my neighbour, nor my gracious Prince, and still less would I want to disappoint my all-merciful Lord, wrote Joseph Haydn in the year 1776. These words are often quoted, commenting that Haydn used them in an authobiographical essay, destined for the almanach “Das Gelehrte Österreich” (Learned Austria). However in this case it could lead to a conclusion that they are directed at the “whole world”, and one could be tempted to see in them something of a declarative statement, creating an image flattering to the composer. That is unlikely to be a correct interpretation. Haydn submitted his autobiography to the publishing house through a certain Mademoiselle Leonore; his letter commences with an agitated apology addressed to this lady: the composer begs her forgiveness for his awkward language and lack of eloquence, since he had very little time to write that note; further followed by a brief text about his life’s events and his main works; as for the adduced quote, it is an ardent closure, again addressed to ‘mademoiselle’ and destined rather for the eyes of the editor than for the whole wide world. It is devoid of affectation, the trait absolutely alien to Haydn: it is a completely sincere confession. Moreover, Haydn generally produces the impression that one is actually left with after reading these humble phrases. He is usually seen as a modest and good man, who at the very same time was “one of the greatest geniuses of the 18th century, that golden age of music” (Stendhal); as a man with a wonderfully clear, harmonious and intergral inner world; a man whose wisdom and sensibility are only enhanced, softened by his good-natured humour.

A cathedral of tragic tones
‘The richest and most productive eighteen months in music history’ is how the English composer Benjamin Britten described Franz Schubert’s final period, when works including the magisterial String Quintet in C major saw the light of day. For besides the quintet, Die Winterreise (Winter Journey), the Symphony in C major (‘the Great’) and the last three piano sonatas flowed from Schubert’s pen. Since Beethoven’s death in 1827, Schubert was engrossed in the development of largescale musical forms, and certainly succeeded in this in the fifty minutes of the quintet. It is not the music of a man who knows he will die by the age of thirty-one, but music born of an almost volcanic ambition, comparable to that of Beethoven when he entrusted his string quartets opus 18 to paper. Notable is Schubert’s preference for a second cello, shared with Boccherini, rather than a second viola as in the quintets of Mozart and Beethoven. Although the four-movement plan of Schubert’s quintet is entirely in the classical tradition of his age, it is already quite clear from the first two movements that there is mention of a grand scheme, as they slowly unfold to reveal a large-scale structure not unlike the later symphonic cathedrals of Anton Bruckner (who was four years old at the time).
Composed in September and October 1828, the String Quintet in C major was Schubert’s instrumental swan song. Long, melodic lines as well as short, rhythmic motifs may be employed, producing an effect of both tranquil contemplation and pulsating explosiveness. Sunrise of the planetary dream collector was originally written for string quartet. But the Ragazze Quartet invited jazz trio Kapok to make a new arrangement together. The mix of string quartet and horn, electric guitar and percussion, all expanded with electronic effects, offers a rich pallet of timbres. He wrote them in his youth, during the summers he spent vacationing with his brothers and sisters on various islands in Houtskär, the Finnish archipelago off the southwest coast of Finland. Sibelius loved these islands, and the three trios we include in this recording were eventually named after two of his favorite islands, as well as the coastal town of Lovisa, where his Aunt Evelina had a house.1 Given their natural talents, the young Sibelius siblings formed a trio. Janne2 played the violin, his sister Linda played the piano, and his brother Christian played the cello. Given the family musicians at hand, it was natural for Sibelius to write piano trios for their mutual enjoyment.
The young Sibelius wrote his Havträsk Trio in A Minor (JS 207) during the summer of 1886, during his first vacation after beginning his studies in music composition. It feels like we hear everything Sibelius learned in class, experimenting as he was, but now not under his teacher’s watchful eye! Movement one begins bombastically, balanced by the three lighter movements which follow. The Andantino second movement gives voice to some of Sibelius’ most beautiful melodies, followed by the whimsical and virtuosic Scherzo third movement which reminds me a little of Mendelssohn. Sibelius finished the piece with a simple melody which culminates into a surprisingly passionate dance.

Violinist Petteri Iivonen, pianist Juho Pohjonen and cellist Samuli Peltonen founded Sibelius Piano Trio and catapulted to success on the European concert stage. When three international soloists of this caliber unite to form a chamber music ensemble, the results are predictably electric. These three friends love playing together, and this love is easy to hear in their concerts and in their recording.

As a proud Finn and as a representative of the Finnish government, I salute Sibelius Piano Trio for their talent and join them in celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Finland’s independence in 2017. Petteri, Juho and Samuli embody and exemplify the best of our country, and as someone who lives in Los Angeles, it gives me great pleasure that the Trio is so intimately connected with California and Yarlung Records.
