But perhaps the word gained most currency in the world of music. As we know, the suite is a favoured cyclical form of baroque instrumental music, representing a series of dance-based pieces that are complementary in the type of movement and unified by a single key (and initially, by the common melodic source).\u003cbr\u003eAt the turn of the 18th century it was customary to publish collections made up of a ‘set number’ of pieces, such as 12 trio sonatas, 12 sonatas for violin and continuo, 12 concerti grossi by Arcangelo Corelli, two 6 piece collections Musicalische Ergötzung (1695) and Hexachordum Apollinis (1699) by Johann Pachelbel. Continuing this tradition, Bach wrote 6 English suites and 6 French suites, 6 Partitas for Keyboard, 6 Suites for Cello, 6 Sonatas and Partitas for Violin, and 6 Brandenburg Concertos. A list of Bach collections shows that the principle of the suite – a single musical composition consisting of several separate pieces (from 4 to 7) grouped together – was used in various genres, both for solo instruments and ensembles. Scrutiny of the composer’s surviving manuscripts not only provides us with a better understanding of his well-known classical masterpieces, but also gives us the opportunity to restore those compositions whose artistic conception was never realised by Bach himself… Only nine incomplete bars remain of the last composition in the large Leipzig manuscript from the late 1730s, the autograph of Bach’s solo keyboard concertos (BWV 1052–1059). This material coincides with the music in the introductory passage (the “Sinfonia”) for the first movement of the sacred cantata BWV 35 (“Spirit and Soul Become Confused”, 1726). However, the English music historian Charles Burney, who undertook extensive travels in Europe, ranked him among the most outstanding musicians of his time and as the equal of Haydn and Mozart. The public loved Rosetti – and there is plenty of documentary evidence to show that his works were often played throughout Europe. By the end of the 1790s, at least half of those of Rosetti’s compositions that have come down to us had been published, some of them, more- over, by very well-established music publishers.\u003cbr\u003eThroughout his comparatively short life, Rosetti wrote quite a lot of music. Today we know of the existence of over 400 works: more than 40 symphonies, about 60 concertos for different instruments (piano, violin, viola, flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon), upwards of 20 works for brass band, a lot of chamber music, pieces for piano, songs and sacred choral music. It is known that J. S. Bach kept copies of Fischer’s com- positions and that this music was a source of inspiration for him. Modern research regards Fischer as a great composer of key- board music, on a par with Froberger and Bach. He died a venerable old man, having known in full the sweetness of recognition and the love of his contemporaries. Haydn submitted his autobiography to the publishing house through a certain Mademoiselle Leonore; his letter commences with an agitated apology addressed to this lady: the composer begs her forgiveness for his awkward language and lack of eloquence, since he had very little time to write that note; further followed by a brief text about his life’s events and his main works; as for the adduced quote, it is an ardent closure, again addressed to ‘mademoiselle’ and destined rather for the eyes of the editor than for the whole wide world.
