This six-movement suite is dedicated both to Franois Couperin and to Ravel s friends who had been killed in World War I.\r\n\r\nIn this work, old dance forms are restored to life, and the music is characterized by grace, charm, order, and moderation. The unusual movement is the Fugue, a form which is seldom found in earlier suites. The two framing movements - Prlude and Toccata - evoke the harpsichord technique of the 18th century. Ten horns, eight trumpets, two harps, organ, five percussionists, two vocal soloists (soprano and alto), as well as a large mixed chorus, fill the podium. And behind all this, invisible, is a 'Fernorchester' (distant orchestra) as a symbol of 'the resurrection'.\r\n\r\nThe work lasts for some 80 to 85 minutes, twice as long as Brahms's Fourth or the Franck and D' Indy symphonies of the same period. And relative to a Haydn or Mozart symphony, there is a tripling in size. Only Bruckner approaches it in the length department with his Fifth and Eighth, each lasting about 75 minutes.\r\n\r\nBut then Mahler, in this symphony, is dealing with the themes of life, death, and resurrection, and he took whatever space he felt that he needed. There is a strangely sharp contrast between the untroubled key of C major and the dark and turbulent contents of the work. It has been suggested that the theme of life, death, and resurrection was borne in on Mahler on the occasion of the funeral of the great conductor Hans von Bülow in 1894.\r\n\r\nIn any case, the words of Klopstock that were read on that occasion are the same ones that Mahler used that year for the apotheosis (last movement) of his Second Symphony: “Aufersteh'n, ja aufersteh'n wirst du, mein Staub, nach kurzer Ruh unsterblich Leben wird der dich rief gegeben.” (Thou shalt arise, yes, arise, my dust, after a brief slumber, thou shalt be called to immortal life). And Mahler expanded the text further with his own words: “O glaube, mein Herz. Es geht dir nichts verloren. Dein ist was du gesehnt. Dein, was du geliebt, was du gestritten. O glaube: Du wardst nicht umsonst geboren. Hast nicht umsonst gelebt, gelitten.” (O have faith, my heart. Nothing shall be lost to thee. What thou hast longed for is thine. My ancestors (like Mahler’s) were merchants in a small shtetl in the Habsburg Empire. They were observant Jews. My grandfather, three years older than Gustav Mahler, decided to leave this religious lifestyle behind him when he went to study in Vienna. My father and his brothers were brought up without any religious education. They adored Goethe, Mozart, Beethoven and Richard Wagner. One of the four brothers converted to Catholicism when he married a daughter of a converted family.\r\n\r\nLater, under Nazi occupation, when it seemed for a while that converting might help them avoid deportation, two of my uncles and an aunt became Catholics. The other members of the family did not. Whether or not these decisions were opportunistic was never discussed in my family. Nobody cared - these were considered unimportant, personal decisions, partly dictated by circumstances. Converts or no converts, nobody practiced any religion and everybody adored culture. With a creative range that won him successes both on Broadway and in Carnegie Hall, it could scarcely be otherwise for this pioneer “crossover” artist. But why try to pigeonhole such brilliance? Better simply to enjoy it’ His parents, Moshe Gershovitz and Rose Bruskin, emigrated separately from Russia to America in the 1890s.They married in 1895 and settled in New York’s tough Lower East Side neighborhood. They had four children: sons Ira, George and Arthur, and a daughter, Frances. Father ran a Turkish bath. Ira dabbled in writing song lyrics while helping out with the customers, sowing the seeds of his long, marvellous partnership with his kid-brother composer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGeorge was a vigorous, active child, playing street hockey and roller-skating through the area. He had little interest in schooling. There was hardly any music in the household until a piano arrived in 1910. Intended primarily for Ira, it was George who was drawn to it most strongly. If it hadn’t appealed to him, he might have followed many of his friends’ paths and become a gangster.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of his piano teachers gave him Chopin, Liszt and Debussy to play, inspiring an early ambition to become a concert pianist. But the family’s need for money led him to drop out of high school at 15. He got a job as a song ‘plugger’ in the retail department of Jerome H. Remick \u0026amp; Co., one of several major popular music publishers located in Tin Pan Alley. His job was to sell their songs by playing and singing them for performers. That was how he met and befriended Fred Astaire, destined to be one of his greatest interpreters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe gradually broke into the pop song market he had come to know so well from the inside. The first of his songs to see print appeared in 1916. It bore the memorable title When You Want ’Em, You Can’t Get ’Em, When You’ve Got ’Em, You Don’t Want ’Em. He had to start somewhere! By the early ’20s, he was earning a healthy income from his own material. For several years he had also been taking private instruction in classical techniques. Sooner or later these two streams were bound to merge. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe premiere of Rhapsody in Blue took place as planned on February 12, 1924, in New York’s Aeolian Hall. Gershwin himself played the solo part. It came at the end of a long, varied program, but it was still received with overwhelming enthusiasm. This irresistible blend of ’20s jazz and daredevil classical virtuosity remains one of the most beloved and frequently performed of all American compositions. Walter Damrosch, conductor of the New York Symphony Orchestra, was in the audience when Gershwin’s rhapsody made its debut. Impressed by its unprecedented amalgamation of popular and classical styles, he commissioned Gershwin to compose a full-scale piano concerto. “Many persons had thought that my rhapsody was only a happy accident,” Gershwin wrote. “Well I went out, for one thing, to show them that there was plenty more where that came from. The following year, he used the theme and its bass line as the subject of Fifteen Variations and a Fugue for fortepiano, Op.35, now known as the ‘Eroica Variations’, before immortalizing them in the finale of his Third Symphony, arguably the greatest and most important symphony ever written. This progress neatly reflects the development of Beethoven’s career. In the late 1790s, the Viennese public danced to his music without caring or probably even knowing who the composer was. With Prometheus Beethoven stood in the half-light of the theatre’s wings, his name overshadowed by the star billing of the ballet’s choreographer and principal dancer, Salvatore Viganò. In the audience at the Burgtheater was Beethoven’s former mentor, Haydn, who two years previously had enjoyed a triumph with his Creation at the same venue. Their conversation afterwards went something\u003cbr\u003elike this:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eH.: It’s good.\u003cbr\u003eB.: But it’s no Creation. What does the following brief interjection of the flutes mean? The answer came to me while thinking about my own dark, shimmering farmhouse parlor where I lived as a child. There, we had only a sofa and a clock on the wall that interrupted the silence. The flutes remind me of the ticking clock hand. This is why it has to sound sober, unemotional, mechanistic and almost metallic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother such example is the end of Don Juan  where the strings seem to tremble. It is here that one can hear the last convulsions of the hero’s dying body. This must sound nervous, dreadful and dramatic. For this reason, I took the liberty to alter the usual sound. I ask the strings to gradually transform the tone into an uncomfortable, convulsing, and shuddering ponticello  until the final pizzicato  marks the hero’s last heartbeat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother detail I would like to emphasize can be found in the trial scene of Till Eulenspiegel.  Before Till is sentenced to death, the D-clarinet has a note that, according to Strauss, must sound entstellt  (“distorted”). The problem with this note is that it is impossible to hear, because the whole orchestra enters with a fortissimo . That is why I have this “distorted” note played one octave higher than written. This way, it does not only sound higher, but tremendously entstellt . The great composer had, after all, himself created a hymn to his homeland with Finlandia in 1899 and another new composition by him would provide another powerful political statement. Sibelius was nonetheless particularly irritated by comments made by Robert Kajanus, Finland’s most well-known conductor, who interpreted the Second Symphony as a musical depiction of the resistance and the triumph of the Finnish people in an article for the Hufvudstadsbladet newspaper a week after the work’s premiere; this opinion was consequently adopted by many. So, what was the ‘concerto’ to Vivaldi? What about it did he love so much to have composed so many? In the decade before Vivaldi composed Le Quattro Stagioni.\r\n\r\nDespite what this recorded collection suggests, few of Vivaldi’s instrumental works have programmatic titles. On the whole, titles gesture towards a general mood. Il Riposo and L’amoroso are examples of this indication of Affekt – indeed, both are united in their key of gleaming E major. The case of Il Grosso Mogul is stranger. There seems to be no known link between Vivaldi and the Indian court of the Grand Mughal, Akbar. The extreme virtuosity required by the soloist in the outer movements, as well as the long, fully written-out cadenzas, suggest a theatrical function. Perhaps Vivaldi performed it as a ‘theatre concerto’ as part of an opera plot set in India. It is a source of constant fascination to me that the composer of this quintessential American sound was born in Brooklyn to a family with Russian origins. Inspired by American folk songs, African American spirituals, and Native American songs, Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World”, was composed during the composer’s years in New York and weaves these American sounds into his rich and lush orchestral language.\r\n\r\nThe cultural bridges built between Africa, Europe, and America allowed artists from these continents to nurture each other and develop different perspectives and rich artistic languages.
