All compositions on Homage To Count Basie are arranged by Mintzer. All of the solos were performed live with the band and in most cases using the first take, no \"overdubs\", \"punch-ins\" or \"fixes\". This is real music in real-time.\r\n\r\nFamiliar tunes on Homage to Count Basie include April in Paris, One O'clock Jump, Shinny Stockings, Lil' Darlin, and Cute. They sound much like the wonderful original arrangements, though definitely \"Minzter-ized\". There are also three new Bob Mintzer compositions, two of which are clearly in the Basie tradition, Havin' Some Fun and Lester Jumps Out. The third original, Home Basie has Basie sensibility juxtaposed with an R\u0026amp;B groove.\r\n\r\n\u003cstrong\u003eFrom the Artist\u003c\/strong\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eWhen one thinks of Count Basie, his orchestra, and the music his organization left us, several words come to mind. Positive, uplifting, swinging, fun, spontaneous, and joyous are but a few. His legacy has influenced not only big band music but also all of Jazz by way of the stellar musicians he kept and the great stable of arrangers who wrote for the band.\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003ePeople like Lester Young, Eddie \"Lockjaw\" Davis, Frank Foster, Thad Jones, Sammy Nestico, Ernie Wilkins, and Neal Hefti have had such a huge influence on my musicianship. I offer this homage to Count Basie, his music, and all the great artists who were spun off from his band.\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eThere are 5 tunes commonly associated with the Basie band on the disc. In arranging these 5 songs I went and listened to as many recorded versions as I could find, and then picked up my pencil. I stuck fairly close to what I had heard in writing the arrangements, trying only to make room for the wonderful players in the band, and to perhaps slightly \"Mintzerize\" the songs.\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eThe remaining 3 songs are original compositions. Two of them are clearly in the Basie tradition (Havin' Some Fun and Lester Jumps Out). The third song is an idea that resulted from superimposing the Basie sensibility on an R and B groove: what might have happened if Sly Stone and the Count teamed up. I think this is one of the most fun recording experiences I have ever encountered, in great part due to the material, but also because of the great musicians in the band and the comfortability factor from having worked with Tom Jung for the last 16 years. After working with Tom for 18 years I finally figured out what he was getting at.\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eI'm a bit of a slow learner at times. I think also I've reached a point in my life where I can appreciate the subtly factor in music and in life, where -I would just as soon be gently caressed rather than smacked with a large stick.\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eGently is exactly what the title suggests: a gentle approach to the big band instrumentation, using clarinets and flutes in place of saxophones, muted brass, the addition of french horns on two numbers, and writing for the band in a range and style which projects a soothing, warm sound.\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eThis is not to say that there isn't intensity in the music. What I've discovered is that when music is played softly it sounds more intense and projects with a greater clarity and energy. The band actually sounds louder when it plays softer.\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eCouple this softer approach with Tom Jung's cutting edge DSD recording prowess, and you have a recording that envelops the listener in such a way that it feels like you are sitting in the middle of the band, and wanting to do so. Nobody wore headphones and no one was in an isolation booth. So, if we couldn't hear each other, a dynamic adjustment had to be made.\r\n'\r\nThere aren't many musicians who would agree to play this softly and uncluttered on an album. The ability to play less is a true sign of a seasoned veteran musician. That is why the four musicians on this album joined Steve Davis to form the Steve Davis Project.\r\n\r\nAnd who else but Tom Jung could bring this project to sonic fruition? Every note on this recording had to be allowed to breathe. Each tune had a certain core and the artists had to get there in the most beautiful, open and spacious way possible. We hope that as listeners on repeated listening your appreciation for the Quality Of Silence will grow.\r\n\r\nJazz drummer Steve Davis was born in Santa Barbara, California in 1958. Following the advice of drum teacher Alan Dawson, Steve moved to New York City in the early 1980s to begin his career as a jazz drummer. Throughout the 1980s Steve built up a reputation in the New York scene, playing and recording with many big names.\r\n\r\nSteve Davis has a keen ear that appreciates the sounds of silence as well as the sounds of music. \u003cem\u003e“The power and beauty of a song is determined by the notes that you don’t play, as much as it is the notes you play,”\u003c\/em\u003e Davis muses in the liners. Though an oft-touted goal, it’s one not generally made by drummers. Here, however, Davis really does “play” the silences thus living up to the promise of the project’s title. Indeed, it’s the charged negative spaces surrounding the notes as much as the notes themselves that keep resonating after the music has faded.\r\n\r\nHere, Davis’ implosive minimalism is fleshed out by soprano saxist \u003cstrong\u003eTim Ries\u003c\/strong\u003e, guitarist \u003cstrong\u003eJohn Hart\u003c\/strong\u003e, bassist \u003cstrong\u003eDrew Gress\u003c\/strong\u003e and pianist \u003cstrong\u003eAndy LaVerne\u003c\/strong\u003e. “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” typifies the approach. Taken at a dizzyingly slow tempo, each pearl of Kern’s melodic strand stands alone, suspended against a black velvet void.\r\n\r\nEven when the tempo zooms, there’s still great clarity. Davis is a visionary, a master percussionist whose sticks and brushes paint rather than pound. Yes, Davis solos with elan (check out his pungent sketch at the end of “Blackbird”).
