The relationship of the drums and strings developed from Sean’s experience of hearing\/playing music from the drum position – conceptually and even literally, the strings are positioned as extensions of the drummer’s limbs: “There are many unique sonic amalgams a drummer experiences sitting behind the drum set that are not heard by the listener. I wanted to capture and exploit these qualities and emulate them in my string arrangements and in the process of mixing the album. So I positioned the two violins far left and right, the viola mid-left, and the cello mid-right. The drum set faces directly towards the quartet. I thought it would be quite interesting to intertwine or overlap the strings and percussion and treat it all as one organism.” The string players Sean chose all have experience in improvisation, and it shows: “I want to praise these great musicians….I knew it wouldn’t be easy to find players with the right background and the level of concentration to execute and interpret my written compositions and on the turn of a dime be able to improvise in a free-form manner.”\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eA Gambler’s Hand\u003c\/em\u003e is the music for an original story of Sean’s, a dreamlike tale about an obsessive gambler who eventually finds himself immured inside a wall and lives out his lonely existence there. The music parallels the moods and liminal psychic states of the story’s first person narrator, but the recording is wordless: the narrative elements are left to the listener’s imagination to find in the music. In the meantime the ensemble took a new name. Traditionally, gamelans are named after the poetic honorific title bestowed on the large gong: Madu Sari translates as “the essence of honey”. But times change, and Alligator Joy was named after the rumoured-to-be-gun-running freighter that brought this newly created, chamber-sized gamelan gadhon to Vancouver in 1990. The pieces on Penumbra were workshopped and premiered on Alligator Joy between 2014 and 2018. By then a complete set of bonangs (small racked pots covering 2 ½ octaves) had been added, but there were still no hanging gongs – its large gong is a pair of closely-tuned, beating plates. A beautiful-sounding and versatile orchestra of high-quality bronze, it lacks only Gamelan Madu Sari’s majestic power.\r\n\r\nAs for the music, three of the five composers here (Michael O’Neill, Mark Parlett and Sutrisno Hartana) were featured on Hive, and the other two have also been associated with the group for three or more decades. So these works represent the seasoned thoughts of composers with a long history of intercultural music-making. And they all have something fresh to offer. Sutrisno Hartana’s “Bahureksa” incorporates musical ideas, instruments and traditional songs from the island of Sulawesi into a Javanese context; it embodies and expresses Indonesian concepts of ritual balance and healing. Mark Parlett’s “Dice Over Easy” transforms Javanese modes into a unique harmonic language while challenging performers to invent new small variations in accordance with the composer’s instructions; in these sections a “controlled chaos” is in play. Sam Salmon’s “96 Tiers” (yes, referencing ? and the Mysterians’ “96 Tears”) is a dynamic process piece, an homage to the early minimalism of Steve Reich and Philip Glass, structured in sections of repeating phrases totalling 96 beats.\r\n\r\nAndreas Kahre’s “Let N = N” dispenses with mallets and beaters – all sounds are produced by ‘finger-drumming’ on metal or wood, and the result is a novel sonic sensuousness hiding a deadpan sense of humour. Michael O’Neill’s “Mode of Attunement” prominently features retuned piano; although not a concerto for piano and gamelan, it artfully explores subtleties around integrating the two, while evoking a nocturnal journey in 11 episodes filtered through hypnogogic consciousness. Parlett’s “Peregrinations in Palindromnia” is overtly a moving meditation; its spare poetic narration combines with spare musical gestures to immerse the listener in a deep evocation of the natural world – of place, transience, death, and return. Finally, O’Neill’s “Grotto: Ventriloquial Investigations” is a condensed version of his music-driven puppet play, with O’Neill voicing both himself and his quick-witted puppet Seamus. Set in an underground grotto evoking Plato’s cave fused with Jung’s unconscious (represented in performance by constantly evolving live computer projections), O’Neill’s ‘spoken-word opera’ adapts a wide range of original and borrowed texts, amidst philosophical sparring, musical interludes, songs, jokes and melancholy observations, circling around the ultimate unanswerable questions (with a tip of the hat to Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy).\r\n\r\nPenumbra being the third and perhaps final release by this group of composer-performers, it stands as a shared statement of their long-term commitment to creating new music beyond the usual borders of genre, style and approach, not limited by aesthetic assumptions or preconditions – apart from their performer’s understanding of the gamelan tradition and their appreciation for the great variety of sounds a gamelan can produce. Mark Parlett: “The pieces on this record allow for a multiplicity of emotions and thoughtscapes. Art and the ability to comprehend it are made in the same workshop. People often enough don’t allow themselves to let go into the sound palette and just receive the beautiful imagery that gamelan-based music can induce…. François uses loopers to similar effect: \u003cem\u003e“I’m interested in opening up the vertical range of the clarinet and treating it as a chordal instrument rather than a monophonic one. I consider my work with loops a sort of extension of my playing with two clarinets simultaneously.”\u003c\/em\u003e Benoît doesn’t employ his looping software here, but his bass station has its own sensuous sine waves and filters: \u003cem\u003e“It’s just a basic (two oscillators) analog synth made by Novation in the early 90s. I mostly use it in the lower register and I love the feel of it. I’ve always liked the mixture of electronics and ‘bio’ sounds such as prepared piano or regular piano…What I like in how the guys play is that we all sound like we’re processed even when we might not be using electronics, because our concern for sound production is very advanced.”\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eWaraba\u003c\/em\u003e is dedicated to the late bassist (and kora and sanza player) Jean-Jacques Avenel, whose 2004 west African jazz release on Songlines, Waraba, Benoît produced. \u003cem\u003e“Anyone who played with Jean-Jacques and shared his love for African music has been deeply imprinted by JJ’s joy, expertise, and world-class musicianship…I still feel his presence when I play, and when I vamp layers on the prepared piano I could keep going forever, like Manding musicians who have another idea of time and duration in music…All of us in this band are strongly related with traditional music from all continents, and the momentum of the music we played found itself naturally.”\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eWaraba\u003c\/em\u003e ends the record on a hopeful and almost joyous note, but the music has moved though many other spaces to get there. The word hof is Old Norse, and has three meanings: possibility, discretion\/ meaning\/understanding and farm\/ court\/temple. The timpani are often called the \"second conductor\" in an orchestra. During the first performance of hof, Rune Halvorsen was both soloist\/ timpanist\/\"the second conductor\", and conductor of the orchestra. A setup with five timpani is voluminous and very visible as a soloist in front of an orchestra. I decided that the only way to make sure the recordings and pressings were of the quality I wanted was to form my own company, and “go it alone”. I had compromised enough, and I decided that I would strive for perfection at every stage of producing an album. I chose the best studio in the north of England, the best cutting studio in Britain and the best pressing plant. When I contacted Nimbus about pressing my album, they said that they would only press records of Classical Music, to which I replied, I would pay whatever their price was. Consequently, my album was the first non-classical record to be pressed by Nimbus. We recorded and mixed the album from 7th to 13th of September 1984.
