Jay also covered a couple of standards including a brilliant and moving rendition of What A Wonderful World and a great instrumental version of Land Of Dreams.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe album was recorded live direct to Analog 2-Track Tape and was mastered to DSD 64 Stereo by Bernie Grundman in Hollywood to produce an album of true audiophile quality sound. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first three cuts are straight out of The Sunset Club; indeed right off of Pete Johnson’s ivories. After the opener, wistful homage to old Piney Brown himself, McShann picks things up both in tempo and jollity with Cherry Red which Cleanhead Vinson and The Cootie Williams Orchestra certainly squeezed for all it was worth in their 1944 cover of it. But McShann swings it pretty good here in 1999 right down to the original “Eagle-rock me, mama, till my face turns cherry red” finish. The lesser known Just For You concludes the Pete Johnson medley with instrumental flourish, Ahmad Alaadeen and Sonny Kenner chiming in tastefully on sax and guitar after McShann’s has his pianistic say. Those two keep ripping it up around McShann’s shouting on Lonely Boy Blues, one of the tunes he and Walter Brown put together with apparent ease after those band rehearsals at the Playmore Arena in ‘41. (Moreover, it was part of the monster playlist which blew down Lucky Millinder at The Savoy when the band went national a year later.)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe two tunes here which are attributed to Jimmy Witherspoon, Blue Monday and Rain is Such a Lonely Sound as well as Gee, Baby, Ain’t I Good to You all appeared on Goin’ To Kansas City, Spoon’s first album cut with McShann’s help for RCA in 1957. The reading here is far more intimate and, of course, far more McShann. And more instrumentals! Crazy Legs and Friday Strut was the title track to a 1976 Sackville LP McShann did with sax veteran Buddy Tate. Here he tries the infectious romp sans sax, braced only by Todd Strait’s light but right cymbals and drums. Coming in on track number nine is Hot Biscuits, a McShann original first recorded back in 1948 for Swing Time and just oozing 18th and Vine. I initially came across her work when my friend Paul Seydor, a senior writer for The Absolute Sound, gave me a copy of her first Groove Note album \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHere’s to Ben\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, a tribute to legendary tenor saxophonist Ben Webster. I don’t know which impressed me more: the lushness of her voice or the vividness of her interpretations.\r\n\r\nMy enthusiasm intensified with her second Groove Note album \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAutumn Leaves: The Songs of Johnny Mercer\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, which I reviewed. I likened my experience to being the last person in a small jazz club where she creates a direct link among her, the microphone, and the listener.\r\n\r\nThe immediacy is uncommon. The sound of her breathing, which would be intrusive in other singers, is so sensuous that it adds to the beauty of her voice. The perfection of her diction is so palpable that you don’t just hear the words — you feel their significance.\r\n\r\nNow, in her third Groove Note album Lush Life, she sounds even more sensuous while a new musical background “strings” has been added to what so far has been a compact jazz-group accompaniment. Although jazz and strings aren’t often paired, they can go together nicely. Clifford Brown worked with them. So have Charlie Parker, Ben Webster, Ella Fitzgerald, and Shirley Horn, to name a few great jazz interpreters of the American songbook.\r\n\r\nBut these are strings with a difference, thanks to Bill Cunliffe’s remarkable arrangements. I Concentrate On You, A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing, When A Woman Loves A Man, April In Paris, Milestones and Con Alma. The sound and feel of the album is very close to that of the great Moodsville and Prestige recordings of the 50s and 60s featuring artists like Gene Ammons. This album is a tribute to those great recordings hence the title Moodsville. There are stunning versions of April In Paris, A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing and When A Woman Loves A Man. The waiting room was converted into a studio. A nine foot Hamburg Steinway, signed by the magnificent Sergei Rachmaninoff interpreter Ruth Laredo among others, was brought in for Cunliffe to play. The recording engineer Michael C. Ross flew in from Los Angeles on Tuesday the 15th of February \u0026amp; we spent most of Wednesday afternoon and evening setting up the studio for the session.  This included tweaking amd aligning the Studer 24 track analog tape recording machine. Vintage tube mikes by well-known names like AKG, Telefunken \u0026amp; Neumann were used during the session. The vocal mike on Jacintha was a legendary U-49 (tube). The entire session was recorded all-analog through a classic Neve Analog Mixing Board.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe multitrack analog masters were flown from Singapore to Los Angeles in March 2005.  All of the mixing for the 8 vocal tracks was done by Michael Ross at LA-FX out in Burbank. The final tracking and mixing session for the instrumental track, I Have An Affair, was done at the world-famous Oceanway Recording Studios in Hollywood in May 2005.  It features Anthony Wilson (of the Diana Krall Quartet) on acoustic guitar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur faith in recording engineer Michael C.
