During the performance, a piston failed to work properly in the soft section of "The Great Gate at Kiev." This piston was to bring on the Austin organ's sepulchral chime stop, which in fact did not happen. So, the audience heard only the soft chords from the regular organ pipes. Not bad, but not what Calvin intended! Immediately after the concert, and after the capacity audience had left the church, Calvin suggested that we re-record the soft passage with the organ chimes so that the recording would fully represent his intent. Nine of his eleven symphonies are mainstays of the late Romantic orchestral repertory, with the three mature masses and Te Deum representing the nal owering of the Austrian symphonic choral tradition as exemplied by the festive mass-oratorios of Haydn and Schubert. A less familiar side of Bruckner's work is found in his many smaller, occasional pieces for choir, some with instrumental accompaniment; all of which, in dramatic contrast to the symphonies, take only a few minutes in performance. The short choral works, both sacred and secular, date from all periods of Bruckner's creative life, which is to say from his rst known work (as a child of eleven!), a Pange Lingua of 1835, to the last completed opus, Helgoland of 1893. In most cases, the motets and choruses demonstrate a development of Bruckner's skill and imagination which parallels that seen in his better-known symphonies.
The most remarkable of these minor masterpieces, such as the Ecce sacerdos magnus or Das deutsche Lied, contain a microcosm of Bruckner's expansive yet potent symphonic technique, and in performance can overwhelm both performer and listener alike with a sense of trenchant power straining to burst the bounds of compact form. An important inuence peculiar to this area of Bruckner's creation is that of the golden age of Catholic church music as represented by Palestrina and other Renaissance masters, whose use of counterpoint is translated by Bruckner into the harmonic language of the late nineteenth century, producing a musical hybrid of austere beauty, archaic yet forward looking.

Blue Alterations is the second DSD Jazz release at NativeDSD Music featuring Al Stauffer on String Bass and Tom Lawton on Piano. The album was recorded to Analog Tape by Bob Sellman of Direct-to-Tape Recording (DTR). It has been transferred to Stereo DSD by Bob Witak at High Definition Tape Transfers (HDTT) with the cooperation and permission of DTR.

A small but distinguished coterie of Philadelphia Jazz artists were drawn into the orbit of the later French expatriate pianist and composer Bernard Peier in the 1960s and 1970s. They included the two musicians on this recording. Al Stauer performed with Peier on a regular basis throughout this period, and Tom Lawton studied with the great but underappreciated Jazz Master until his death in 1976.

Indeed, those who followed Peier’s incommensurately chronicled transit throughout the Jazz movement can hear glinting echoes of his playing in Lawton’s brilliant keyboard style: Lawton piles his pianologue with heady runs, craggy conjurations and bluesy intimations of melancholy that are strongly reminiscent of the man from Espinal.

Peier was a charming man who experienced some difficulty in communicating via the English language, albeit no problem at all when the keyboard was his conduit. The one composition by which he is represented on this recording, Tired Blues, bears that title because of a semantic misunderstanding: Peier told a commentator some years after he had written it that the meaning, he’d really had in mind was “relaxed”.

Stauer was one of the Philadelphia area’s most esteemed jazz bassists. Self-taught on the instrument, at the time of this recording he had been a professional musician for more than three decades. Over the years he accompanied such prime jazzmen as Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Gerry Mulligan, Bill Evans and Sam Most, and his association with Peier lasted a dozen years. He lived in Sewell, New Jersey, and taught privately in Philadelphia and at Glassboro (New Jersey) State College, now renamed Rowan University. His duets with himself— singing the notes while he plucks them on the bass—are a trademark of some singularity.

Al Stauffer/Tom Lawton Duo
Al Stauffer Songs on the album include Yesterdays, Night and Day, Blue Moon, The Lady Is A Tramp, September Song and Pennies From Heaven.

In July of 1955 when the music in this album was recorded, none of the principals concerned had any idea that the tapes would one day find themselves on the market. The purpose was merely to record material suitable for demonstrations. As a result the performers were under no strain whatever, and the playing clearly shows a spontaneity and vitality that one seldom hears outside of live and informal performances.

In keeping with the nature of the music, intimate microphone placement was employed with the result that certain extra-musical sounds are clearly audible at times. The usual practice of recording engineers is to edit out sounds of this sort, replacing them with portions of later "takes" of the same piece in which "errors" of this sort do not occur. While editing of this sort might result in a note perfect performance, it is in no sense a natural one. Since we believe that these sounds enhance rather than detract from the performance, and, since they are actually a part of what did take place, we wouldn't think of cutting them out.

To be specific, the drummer's suspension seat, as he bobs up and down on it, emits a sometimes audible squeak if one knows what to listen for. And perhaps the best of all occurs in the introduction of one of the numbers where one player, somewhat in doubt as to what the piece is, looks around quizzically and says, "What is this, Blue Moon?" (Whereupon one of his fellows nods affirmatively telling him that it is Blue Moon.)

The performers on the album are: Joe Holland, drums; Fred Rogers, clarinet; Bill Wallace, piano; Howard Ward, bass.
