For these 4-channel recordings,\r\nthe microphones were suspended on four arms, separated by\r\nIsoMike baffles.  For stereo, only the front microphones are used – no mixing\r\n\r\nMost baffles absorb sound from mid- to high-range frequencies;\r\nlower frequencies are more difficult to absorb. Here, the unique\r\nshapes of the IsoMike baffles are advantageous. As lower frequencies\r\nflow around the heart- or egg-shaped baffles, they are\r\nscattered, effectively dissipating their energy.\r\n\r\nEliminating line-of-sight between the microphones seems to\r\nlower some fidelity robbing cancellations, this reveals a layer of\r\nextreme detail and a sense of increased sensitivity. It is stunning in DSD and even better in DSD 4.0 Surround Sound.\"\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\r\n\r\nClarinetist Russell Harlow is one of the nation’s premiere solo and chamber clarinetists. Having grown up in Los Angeles during the golden age of Heifetz, Piatigorsky, and Primrose teaching at USC, he studied as a young artist first with clarinetist Gary Foster, then with Mitchell Lurie. He attended a Gregor Piatigorsky master class and performed and was coached on the Brahms Trio with him at Piatigorsky’s home.\r\n\r\nAt the age of twenty-one, Russell won the audition to join the Utah Symphony and, while serving as Associate Principal Clarinetist, he continued his studies, traveling to spend a summer working with Harold (Buddy) Wright, the late principal clarinetist of the Boston Symphony, and with virtuoso violinist Charles Libove.\r\n\r\nRussell Harlow’s love of chamber music led him first to found Salt Lake City’s Nova Chamber Music Series, then to join as Co-Director and Artist in Residence of the\r\nBeethoven Festival Park City, the chamber festival founded in 1983 that continues as Utah’s oldest classical music festival. Russell Harlow invited his mentor Charles Libove, with pianist Nina Lugovoy, to perform at the Beethoven Festival and they performed together at the festival for many years, as well as presenting Beethoven Festival concert together at Carnegie’s Weill Hall in New York City.\r\n\r\nAfter 41 years, Russell Harlow retired from the Utah Symphony to pursue his solo, chamber music and recording career, and currently performs over forty concerts a year. Composers from Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 -1750) to Igor Stravinsky (1882 -1976) have arranged their own music and the music of their peers to suit their specific needs. Bach not only arranged his own music but whole violin concertos of Antonio Vivaldi for organ solo. Perhaps he did this for his own study purposes or to present the pieces to an audience without the expense of having to pay an orchestra and soloists.\r\n\r\nIn the 20th Century, Igor Stravinsky made his own arrangements of the Canonic Variations on “Vom Himmel hoch da komm' ich her” by Bach for orchestra and chorus, as well as his own “Concertino for String Quartet” for various other instruments and his stage piece “L’histoire du Soldat” for piano, violin and clarinet. His main interest in doing so was to collect royalties on the new arrangements. Later, in 1981, composer Ramiro Cortes arranged Stravinsky’s forementioned “Concertino” for a small ensemble that included harpsichord. Cortes was in the process of arranging his own Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano (1981) as a clarinet sonata. Because of his untimely death in 1984, he was unable to complete the sonata.\r\n\r\nThis is a \u003cstrong\u003ePure DSD\u003c\/strong\u003e release – recorded in Stereo and 4 Channel DSD 256 by Producer Ray Kimber and Recording Engineer Aaron Hubbard using the Hapi Analog to Digital Converter from Merging Technologies.
