The instrument has, however, suffered an unkind fate over the course of time as a result of moves within the cathedral, a reduction of the number of stops, and exposure to dampness and draft. Maintenance of the organ eventually became so demanding that those in charge of its repair could only pray and hope for the best. Many years of tireless effort to have the organ restored, led by former Director of Music Per Fridtjov Bonsaksen, finally produced results, and in the spring of 2012 the municipality of Trondheim agreed to act as guarantor for the cost of the restoration project. In late summer of the same year, Kuhn Organ Builders began the laborious task of dismantling the organ and sending a significant portion of the instrument to its factory in Switzerland for restoration. The following year, in September 2013, work began on installing the organ in its new façade, and in May 2014 it was ready for use. After having stood “with clipped wings” for over fifty years, the organ again has its full range of timbre. He was born in Crema, Italy, and he studied with a certain Luigi Rossi at the music conservatory in Milan. When he applied to the conservatory, there were only openings for bassoon and double bass — plague or cholera — so he chose double bass.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eBottesini was a man of the opera. He wrote twelve operas, and he conducted many works by his contemporaries, among them, Donizetti, Bellini, and Verdi. And it is said that as entertainment during intermission he played variations on the themes of the evening on his bass. He also conducted the premiere of Verdi’s Aida in Cairo in 1871.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eGrande Duo Concertante is one of Bottesini’s most popular pieces. With its blinding virtuosity and blend of riveting drama and more straightforward melodies, it is an audience favorite. Gran Allegro ”Alla Mendelssohn” draws its inspiration from the first movement of Mendelssohn’s violin concerto. This can also be said of his orchestral, choral, and chamber music, which he composed in abundance. The selections on this album reflect his intense development from a neoclassical enthusiasm for Baroque to radical modernism, and then to what Hovland himself called an about-turn. He told university students in 1974: “Towards the 1970s I reverted to a Romantic or neo-friendly style.”\u003cbr\u003eCHORALE PARTITA NO. 1. SIX VARIATIONS ON GJØR DØREN HØY, GJØR PORTEN VID \u003cbr\u003eOPUS 7 (1947) \u003cbr\u003eWhen Egil Hovland completed his organ studies in 1948, he had already composed his first partita, a piece clearly influenced by his teacher, Per Steenberg (1870-1947).\u003cbr\u003eIn his composition course, \u003cem\u003evocal polyphony, \u003c\/em\u003eSteenberg had ascetic ideals represented most importantly by Palestrina and Renaissance polyphony. This purified, refined style became an ideal for many young composers such as Hovland, Conrad Baden, and Knut Nystedt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003eSteenberg left behind the manuscript of an alternative hymnal in which he had omitted close to one hundred hymns because they were \u003cem\u003esuperfluous, less effective, and even inadequate in a religious or musical context. \u003c\/em\u003eIt was published by his students in 1949.\u003cbr\u003eThe variations on \u003cem\u003eGjør døren høy \u003c\/em\u003ebear the influence of Steenberg’s conservative style, whereby the composition of a chorale must follow all the rules of Renaissance and Baroque polyphony. Typical for the Matre sound laboratory is that all the instruments, not only the winds, are expected to produce breathing sounds. Now it may well be inappropriate to present an interpretation for listeners who themselves are qualified to point out the connections between the title and the work. Nonetheless: We note that all choices are made in the light of the simple sound description of the title: “Breath”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe solo strings playing as a quintet on this recording have a more precise breathing sound than a tutti section, which one might expect of a work commissioned by a symphony orchestra. Another point from Matre’s laboratory is his deep insight into the playing techniques of the various instruments. Every single deviation from the standard playing technique is described in detail in the score, strengthening the musicians’ confidence in the composer. I do not wish to bore the listener with examples, apart from one, where the strings play harmonics that do not resonate naturally. The sonata opus 5 was the last work for solo piano in the genre that Brahms would write.\r\n\r\nThe two Rhapsodies op. 79 were composed in 1879 when Brahms was in his mid-forties and at the peak of his career.
