The solo responsory \u003cem\u003eIn pace\u003c\/em\u003e reverses the usual roles, with polyphony opening and plainchant closing each section. The shorter motets include \u003cem\u003eO nata lux\u003c\/em\u003e, two settings of \u003cem\u003eSalvator mundi\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eIn jejunio et fletu\u003c\/em\u003e, and the late masterpiece \u003cem\u003eSuscipe quaeso Domine\u003c\/em\u003e carries a devotional intensity that Quinney calls an “enigmatic monument.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eAs Quinney explains in his liner notes, he has also thought carefully about vocal scoring and performing pitch. Boy choristers and altos share the top lines of the Mass, and in other pieces they take different voices. Tenors and basses take the lower parts at a comfortable pitch, so that no one sings outside their range, challenging the assumption that modern SATB must always apply. The result is music of precise, singable craft, sung with the choir’s characteristic clarity.
