He was a Russian genius; the breadth of melodic flow in his scores is remarkable. It is also worth noting that prior to Tchaikovsky nothing comparable to the First Piano Concerto had existed in the Russian musical tradition, nor was there anything like it in the rest of the world’s concert music (post-Beethoven): it was unlike Schumann’s refined chamber-like Concerto, and even less akin to the concerti of Liszt, with their theatrical pathos. By this date, the 36-year-old composer had written the most important two thirds of what would be his entire output: three operas and two symphonies, outstanding in their artistry and creativity. The Third Piano Concerto was conceived at this ‘golden mean’ in his creative life. This is not just a mathematical notion. The score is the most perfect reflection of Rachmaninov as artist and man. It is the embodiment of his contribution to the history of the new music. Rachmaninov was of course a genius, both as composer and pianist, but it was the piano concerto that was to be the synthesis and symbol of his musical gift, and the Third Piano Concerto indisputably represents the peak of his genius.

Chronologically the Third Piano Concerto belongs to the period described in Russia as the Silver Age. However, as a counterbalance to the centrifugal tendencies of this artistic period, the main creative thrust in Rachmaninov’s work is centripetal and the center is in fact the Russian person, with all the spiritual and emotional attributes and intrinsic elements of that symbolic person. In the Third Piano Concerto, national traits are enveloped in a European virtuoso style, but this style is interpreted in a more Russian way which is particularly effective. When we combine this with the deep personal nature of his musical expression, we can see that this work reflects not simply the power of the Russian style but also the lyricism of personal emotion.

Denis Matsuev - Piano
Mariinsky Orchestra
Valery Gergiev, Conductor

The expectations and the reality. We wanted to showcase important Russian composers from diff erent eras: Rachmaninov, Stravinsky and Shchedrin. Rachmaninov’s first concerto is one of my favourites; it is full of youthfulness, even though this is the later revision, edited by the composer. This composition was written while he was still at the Conservatory, and is one of the most moving and melancholy concertos. Despite his youth, Rachmaninov is revealed here as a profound artist. All his themes are quite astonishing. His genius shines through in this moving work, with all of its youthful naivet.. I haven’t played this work as oft en as the rest of his concertos, but, all the same, Gergiev and I have played it a number of times in Europe and it has been very well received. Ironically the successful reception of the Seventh proved to be a double-edged sword for the composer. On the plus side it demonstrated the potential for symphonic music to be utilised as a potent weapon in the war effort, even encouraging one Soviet propagandist in 1942 to suggest ‘its significance extends beyond the bounds of merely a musical event’.
Whilst remarks of this nature certainly enhanced Shostakovich’s status as a war hero, the work’s popularity risked placing any subsequent symphony he was to write under much greater critical scrutiny. This was certainly the case with the Eighth. By the time he began work on the score in July 1943 a series of victories by the Red Army had turned the fortunes of the war much more in the favour of the Allies. The hecatomb of the Great Patriotic War was the largest public sacrifice in the nation’s history. It is thus all the more surprising to encounter some of the sanguine sentiments expressed in the wartime poetry of Olga Berggolts, whose greatest work was inspired by the experience of living through the Leningrad Blockade. ‘We were so happy’, she writes, for example, in “Leningrad Diary”, a poem written during the cold months of January and February 1942 and dedicated to all those defending her city during the siege; ‘We radiated such stormy freedom, /That our grandchildren would envy us’. The fact is that during the war years, everything was simplified. Russians lived in a black and white world of ‘us’ and ‘them’ (that is, the enemy threatening the nation’s destruction). To quote the remarkable Blockade Diary written by the literary critic Lidia Ginzburg, another outstanding female survivor of the Siege of Leningrad, ‘life was cleansed of substitutes and hoaxes’. After decades of paralyzing fear, the trials of war set the people of Soviet Russia on a journey of self-discovery. When the Mariinsky Theatre decided, at the start of the twentieth century, to stage Russia’s first production of Richard Wagner’s tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen, the theatre’s principal conductor Eduard N.pravn.k suggested they start with what he considered the most interesting of the operas, Die Walküre. This was an obvious choice for a man raised on Russian realist art and the Russian writers of the natural school. Die Walküre’s mythological story revolves around mortal characters, and, if we count the fate of the god Wotan, the three fates represented in the opera possess recognisably lifelike forms. Siegmund and Sieglinde enter into a conjugal union in defiance of custom and tradition, Wotan rejects his children, and Bruünnhilde rebels against her father’s will. Several age-old themes are embodied in these fates: the clash between man and woman, between father and child – and in both cases, Wagner presents these as dramas of love – while the rift between gods and heroes takes the form of a metaphysical confrontation. The eminent German musicologist Carl Dahlhaus thought of Die Walku?re as the story of Wotan: the god who does not want to remain a god, preferring liberty to the law, but the price he must pay is to become ‘free of soul’, as Wagner expressed it, and in his final scene he bids the earthly world farewell. Yet Die Walküre remains a lyrical story, a drama about humans; it comes as no surprise that the opera is named after the god’s self-sacrificing daughter, who is stripped of immortality. Not only the mortal characters but also the very spirit of the opera are summed up by Boris Pasternak: “It is man’s first settlement in those worlds discovered by Wagner for fantasies and mastodons”1. The whimsical music focuses on the deceitful Joker who thinks himself unbeatable, thanks to a chameleon-like ability to become any card.
