myrios classics

The idea of producing records by accepting hardly any compromise, and to work with artists that think alike, is what I always headed for. As a freelancing recording producer and engineer, I often witnessed situations where pressure by executive people resulted in a counterproductive working environment. But a recording situation is something very special for the artist. This is where to concentrate on his or her talent and to set a milestone, a benchmark that characterizes the artistry of his musical sense at a given point in his life and that will be respected – in the best case – for decades.
But the more the crisis foreshadowed the music business, expected sales figures of the better days, now totally unrealistic, stood on the foreground and weighted heavily on executives and artists, even before the first bar of music had been recorded. Some of these artists ‘survived’ somehow the years of the music crisis under the cover of a major company that became extremely cautious regarding repertoire and production costs. As a result, recording sessions were planned without an appropriate time for preparation, but a rather tight schedule. Recording demanding pieces in a timeslot of only two days in the middle of a world tour? No problem! Meanwhile, key persons the musicians trusted in and with whom they built a close relationship throughout the years, were fired. Literally with every phone call, another representative came into the game. Some artists fell below a given line in an Excel sheet and were simply kicked by their company, no matter what their part of our musical heritage represents today. Maybe because they didn't meet the sales expectations or because they just became "too old" to represent the image of a label that is always desperately seeking for new, fresh and innocent faces.
Thanks God times changed, and some of the bigger companies learned their lessons and re-established a great home for artists. Some maybe didn't up to date. However, this crisis gave smaller labels a big chance to grow and establish. I am proud that myrios classics is considered being one of these labels, both, by artists and listeners. And I feel very honored that so many serious musicians trust in our work.

Yours,
Stephan Cahen

In the Romantic era, thousands of songs and poems emerged from the wellspring of unre- quited love. In planning my first solo lied album, I found this extremely important. I immediately went out and also bought his “Letters to the Immortal Beloved”, where the Titan opens up his very soul. In my opinion, those letters are probably the key el- ement in helping us grasp what the “Distant Beloved” song cycle is about. Until then I had imagined Beethoven as a harsh, bitter man. Now, in his letters, I was flabbergasted to find him expressing himself in such impatient, en- thusiastic, love-besotted terms. The “Distant Beloved” cycle was published in early 1816. It is special for two reasons: it is the only song cycle Beethoven ever wrote, and it represents the first through-composed song cycle in music history. With this in mind, it almost made me nervous to discover a series of songs by Weber that hardly anyone knew, written practically in parallel with Beethoven’s song cycle. I thought it would be fascinating to place the two works side by side. Weber’s tongue-in-cheek title The Four Tempera- ments On the Loss of the Beloved is not the only element suggesting that the cycle should be included in a programme such as this one; I also find it great fun to slip again and again into the different roles these songs contain.

Julian Prégardien

For music-lovers, “Schubertiade” has become a winged word that evokes recitals featuring Romantic Lieder and chamber music. That was already the case on a December evening in 1826. The law student Franz Hartmann, originally from Wurzburg, wrote in his Vienna diary: „I went to Spaun’s, where a truly great Schubertiade took place! The list of guests was quite impressive: the Arnets, the Witteczeks, the Kurzrocks, the Pomps, the mother-in-law of state chancellery clerk Witteczek, then Frau Watteroth, Betty Wanderer, Kuppelwieser the painter and his wife, Grillparzer, Schober, Schwind, Mayrhofer along with his landlord Huber, then the tall Huber as well, Derffel, Bauernfeld, Gahy (who splendidly played piano four hands with Schubert), Vogl (who sang almost 30 wonderful songs), Baron Schlechta and a number of Imperial court clerks and secretaries were all present. Finding myself in a particularly agitated mood, I was almost moved to tears by the trio in the 5th March, which invariably reminds me of my dear, dear mother. After the music was over, we all enjoyed splendid conversation, then we danced.”Quite early on, a circle of art-loving friends had gathered around Franz Schubert, the former Vienna boarding pupil and trained schoolteacher who – unlike his father and his brother – had chosen to flee the daily pedagogical grind and its inevitable disenchantments under the Austrian Restauration to find his vocation as a freelance musician.

The first person to coin the term “Schubertiade” for musical soirées was his friend Franz von Schober. In 1817, Schober had introduced the timid, modest composer to an artistic nature entirely different from his own: the singer Johann Michael Vogl, 24 years his senior. Tall, with a resounding, projecting, self-assured voice, Vogl left the Vienna Court Opera in November 1822 to devote himself entirely to Schubertian artsong, accompanied by none other than the composer himself. “The way he sings and I accompany him, those moments when we seem to merge and become one, are something new and undreamt-of”, Schubert wrote from Salzburg on 12 September 1825 to his brother Ferdinand. Such magical moments of congenial musicmaking must have occurred quite often at the Vienna Schubertiades, those private soirées for their circle of friends. A convivial aesthetic experience was desired by all, but it wasn’t the only reason they congregated. A Schubertiade also offered these citizens the chance to withdraw, in private, from the zealous, restrictive surveillance of the Metternich regime. With artistic means they could express their unease vis-à-vis the State’s chilling, authori- tarian apparatus while taking less risks – resorting to parables from Antiquity and painting emotional landscapes that seemed to be merely personal at first glance.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv-W2c1PJt8

With this album I have fulfilled my long-held dream of recording a collection of beautiful Romantic miniatures: many of the pieces featured here are largely unknown, and they amply exploit the viola’s melancholy facets and moods. For a pianist, the Transcendental Etudes cycle is one of the most towering mountain peaks of the literature. I was inspired by one of Ferruccio Busoni’s aphorisms, that “Bach is the alpha and Liszt is the omega of piano playing”. And Liszt definitely is the omega: almost without exaggeration, everything in modern piano writing – starting with the 19th century piano technique, and beyond – was invented by Liszt in the decades that he was busy with the Transcendental Etudes . There’s something very touching about the fact that he came up with the musical material of these pieces when he was a 15 year-old boy. Those first, 1826 versions of the Etudes are very advanced for a 15 year-old, but in another way also rather naive. In 1837 comes the nearly unplayable, incredibly virtuosic second version, but even though they have been technically transformed, the pieces stick with the same musical material – the themes, the basic shapes – of the first version. And finally comes the 1852 version, the picture of these pieces in Liszt’s adulthood: whatever might have been overwrought in the second version is now streamlined and really perfected, and that is the version I’ve recorded. She pairs them with excerpts from György Kurtág’s cycle “Games, Signs & Messages”, selecting six numbers to form her own personal homage to Bach.

For what kind of instruments did Bach write his solo suites BWV 1007-1012? How did they sound, what did they look like? This subject still gives rise to much speculation. Johann Peter Kellner’s manuscript copy from the early 1700s is one of the two main sources for the six solo suites, and it indicates a viola basso. The violoncello had not yet become standardized in terms of size, construction, and playing technique; Bach probably had instruments in mind such as the violoncello piccolo or the viola da spalla. The latter was a viola attached in front of the body by a strap: Bach performed the viola da spalla in public himself – possibly these suites. Tabea Zimmermann has not switched her musical hardware for this recording: here she plays her 1980 Vatelot viola with a classical bow.

In 2009, the album “Solo” (MYR003, also available at NativeDSD) launched Tabea Zimmermann’s collaboration with the myrios classics label. The release was crowned with a multitude of international awards: Gramophone Editor’s Choice, “Stern des Monats” in Fono Forum, 4f in Télérama and 5 Stars in the Italian magazine Musica; moreover, in response to that groundbreaking recording, the jury of the coveted German ECHO Klassik Prize selected Tabea Zimmermann as “2010 Instrumentalist of the Year”.

"The original Solo I album from 2009 was the start of our collaboration and turned out being one of the most successful viola albums. 10 years after this album, Tabea and I met in the studio again (this time in the Jesus Christus Kirche Berlin) to record two more Bach cello suites (on viola of course), interwoven this time by a „suite“ of 6 pieces from the cycle „Signs, Games & Messages“ by György Kurtág, including the piece Kurtág dedicated to Tabea (…eine Blume für Tabea…/ a flower for Tabea)."

-- Stephan Cahen, Producer & Recording Engineer
