Originally completed in 1926, Martin did not allow the work to be performed until 1963. After its premiere he explained: ‘I felt that a personal expression of religious belief should remain secret and hidden from public opinion.’ Thankfully Martin decided to share his secret; his Mass has become one of the 20th century’s most powerful works composed for a cappella choir. Beyond the similarity of their surnames there is little in common between the two men. For Swiss-born Martin, his musical breakthrough came early in life when he heard a performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. His musical language draws on a wide variety of influences, including Renaissance polyphony, Hindemithian extended tonality and traces of Schoenberg’s twelve-tone system, but above all, Bach. In contrast, the urbane, cosmopolitan Martinu was a stylistic butterfly, and a bit of a late bloomer. With his vast experience he uses the possibilities of the guitar to the utmost and follows the classical tradition of making instrumental versions of folk songs – like in Miguel Llobet’s arrangements of Catalan folksongs, in Benjamin Britten’s English and Chinese folksongs arrangements, and in Bela Bartok’s Hungarian folk songs. He wrote almost 100 works for guitar and received commissions from the greatest players of our time, including Andre Segovia, Alexandre Lagoya, Almeida Laurendo and Ida Presti.\r\n\r\nIn 1939 he escaped the rise of fascism in Europe and immigrated to the USA where he settled in Hollywood, scoring films for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He wrote more that 200 film scores, and taught filmscore giants Henry Mancini, André Previn, Scott Bradly and John Williams. He also wrote for almost every instrument, including concertos for violinist Jascha Heifetz and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky.\r\n\r\nIn 1960 Castelnuovo-Tedesco wrote a major collection for guitar solo and narrator based on poems by the Nobel Prize winning writer Juan Ramón Jiménez’s popular book  \"Platero y yo\", a text known by almost all Spanish people. \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePlatero\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAngelus\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e are the first and second of the 28 movements in this huge suite describing the conversation between the writer and the donkey Platero, who Jimenez describes very poetically as“ small donkey, a soft, hairy donkey: so soft to the touch that he might be said to be made of cotton, with no bones. And yet, many of the greatest additions to the repertoire are one-offs, with often no more than one or two within a composer’s oeuvre.\r\n\r\nAnd so it was with \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003ePoul Ruder: Piano Trio\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e, his first foray into the realm of the Piano Trio. Composed in 2020 for\u003cstrong\u003e Trio con Brio Copenhagen\u003c\/strong\u003e, Ruders described his Piano Trio with characteristic wit as “just \u003cem\u003eitself\u003c\/em\u003e, with no hidden agenda,” a musikalische Ding an sich, bursting with ideas and virility. The outer movements zip by in a flurry of heightened virtuosity that verges on the ecstatic (or hysterical, depending on your mood), with the central movement, “Slow Motion,” living up to the title’s promise.\r\n\r\nWere this writer to offer a musical frame of reference, Ruder’s new Piano Trio occupies the sonically exploratory-yet-familiar sound world of Ives’ oddball works for piano and strings, sans the American patriotic tunes. But Corelli’s actual compositional style, his way of organizing musical thoughts into phrases and motives, is fundamentally derived from the expressive capabilities of his chosen instrument, the violin.\r\n\r\nCertain melodic patterns used to modulate and to effect sequences (e.g., chains of sevenths and fifths) basically derive from specificities of violin technique that amplify an instrument with origins primarily in dance music into one that in Corelli’s hands, could imitate the rise and fall of the sung and spoken human voice. Distler, who was a deeply religious man, has been recognized as a forerunner of the New German Church Music, an important musical movement which developed in the 1930s. The Nazis stigmatized Distler’s compositions as “degenerate art”, and when he received his conscription papers, he took his life.
