The big challenge here was: how do you give each of us the opportunity to be him or herself, while at the same time bringing the group together as one?\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eOn the album, all three singers have their own song, but in later tracks they come together more and more. Lyrics were written by them, in Hindi, Oshiwambo and Arabic, and the collaboration inspired me to write music that I would never have written without their influence. The DSD 64, DSD 128, and DSD 512 editions of the album were created by NativeDSD Mastering Engineer Tom Caulfield using Signalyst’s HQ Player Pro 4 Mastering Software.\r\n\r\nForkel, the author of the first significant Bach monograph, tells the story of the origin of the composition. According to him, the great Johann Sebastian was commissioned by a certain Count Keyserlinck to compose the Goldberg Variations. The Count suffered from insomnia, therefore he asked the composer whom he had known from earlier to compose some music which his court harpsichordist, Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, could play for him from time to time in the tormenting hours of the night. Bach believed that a series of variations would best suit the purpose so that Goldberg could play different movements each night. Keyserlinck received the score and paid an appreciable sum for the work, handing over a golden plate with a hundred double Louis d’or.\r\n\r\nThe 27th variation continues the method only partially: it is a canon on the ninth but there are only two parts. Variation 30 is a Quodlibet of well-known folksongs instead of the expected canon on the tenth. Variations 4, 7, 10, and some others are character pieces (No. 7 is a gigue, No.10 is a fugato, but No. 16, the French overture, also belongs to this group), others (from Variation 5) are virtuoso pieces utilizing the technical possibilities of the two-manual harpsichord and are difficult to play on the piano, since the two hands always cross owing to the lack of the other manual. It remains an unanswered question of how Goldberg could cope with the task. For this prestigious recording I used the legendary original Neumann U47, U48 tube microphones from the years 1947 and 1949 with a very natural tone using field effect bi-microphone techniques. These microphones have an important history: they are in fact the original microphones used to record, among others, the Beatles performances in the Abbey Road Studio and by RCA for the “Living Stereo” recordings.\r\nThe sound I can capture with these legendary microphones is perfectly in line with my sonic taste. No other microphone has such a true timbre and the ability to engrave all the nuances of sound and all the richness of the harmonics. The uniqueness of these microphones is linked to their ability to make a perfect \"sound photograph\" and to put the music perfectly placed in the sound space chosen for the recording\r\n\r\nA state-of-the-art system with no sound manipulation, no equalization, no reverb, no compression and expansion ... but natural sound with true timbre to best enhance the acoustics of the Sala dell'Ermellino. Fonè has been offering for 40 years recordings made in the name of technological refinement and aimed at recovering the original musical atmospheres. The result of this recording is fantastic. With this recording I wanted to give the listener a unique experience. It is as if the listener were sitting on an armchair positioned in the ideal point in the Sala dell'Ermellino. In this position the sound has a field effect and its depth, width and height are very noticeable. The Nagra T, with its four direct drive motors, two pinch rollers and a tape tension head, has one of the best transports ever made. The record company accidentally fell upon this treasure while looking for the masters of Volume II of the original album.  The 40 year-old tapes were in excellent condition, and over a week was spent editing and mastering them in high resolution.\r\n\r\nThe album keeps the musical tag which bands played to indicate the end of a set. A slow fade-out and fade-in was made to identify the break before the last one. A beautifully large room with great acoustics. There was a fantastic Steinway Concert Wing piano that had just been overhauled. The keys have a light touch with a tight control over the hammer. The feeling of the contact between your fingertip and the sound you make with it is unbelievable.\r\n\u003ch3\u003ePiano and Quintone\u003c\/h3\u003e\r\nI knew immediately that this would be a special recording. We played without amplification and without headphones. Oene was positioned to the left of me, behind the open wing flap. After a few takes we gradually turned to the positioning and the sound between Piano and Quintone.\r\n\r\nWith Jared Sacks, we made a plan to play much more than to listen, and that we were not going to make  choices on the day in terms of takes. For me this was a surprise because I am used to making certain  choices in the studio based on listening to the recorded takes in the moment. I trusted Jared and we took the rest of the day and the day that followed, without really listening back.\r\n\r\nA few weeks later Jared forwarded the DSD recordings and I was positively surprised! This is a very special sound. I hear every little detail of what I played. The combination with Oene comes across beautifully. Bassist Niko Langenhuijsen’s ‘Gemeentereinigingsorkest’ Vaalbleek and the Willem Breuker Kollektief were among his favourite orchestras. We find the influence of their music in many of his projects. With his adaptation of Bach’s ‘St. Matthew Passion’ and his own ‘Judas Passion’ and ‘Stabat Mater Stabat Pater’ he caused quite a stir in the Dutch classical music scene. He is an inventor, a composer looking for new and different forms.\r\n\u003ch3\u003eDances\u003c\/h3\u003e\r\nThe music he wrote for the New World Quartet is the musical result of all of the above: ‘Dances’, a musical novel with a prologue and two suites. The opener, ‘Evolutionary Tango’, is a musical translation of the evolution, latched on to the pulse of the Argentinian tango: an inescapable rhythm, which feels like the heartbeat of someone in love. The flugelhorn sounds as free as a bird, and the baritone saxophone gives him a musical answer. Meanwhile, the accordion depicts the pain of daily life and the struggle for survival.\r\n\u003ch3\u003eCivilization Suite\u003c\/h3\u003e\r\nThe ‘Civilization Suite’ starts off with the light-footed sketch ‘Transitioned’. Giovanni Felice Sances’s baroque dance music enters with ‘Accenti Queruli’. Then the staccato ‘Civilization #2’ takes over and we are surprised by the introduction of John Dowland’s ‘Can She Excuse My Wrongs’, a moment in which the minstrel directly enters the modern age. It’s an ancient song, made world-famous by Sting’s performance. ‘Civilization #4’ brings us yet another ominous staccato. The grumpy baritone sax lashes out and gives expression to the idea that our civilization is really taking a wrong turn.\r\n\u003ch3\u003eGalanthus Nivalis\u003c\/h3\u003e\r\nThe first suite felt mainly ominous, but in ‘Galanthus Nivalis’, Kracht seems to have taken another direction. The first part opens with positive vistas. This trend is continued in the course of the suite.
