sommelier du son

sommelier du son is a project by Birgit Hammer-Sommer and Dirk Sommer, in which all is about good music and its adequate recording and reproduction: Recording - Producing - Mastering or "rpm" for short.

At first Birgit's and Dirk's intention was to make good sounding records of renowned artists, whose music just appealed to the personal taste of both of them. The result were four LPs with such well known musicians as Charlie Mariano, Dieter Ilg, Michel Godard, Steve Swallow, Gavino Murgia and Hans Theessink.

The best analog studio equipment – as Studer, Acousta, Nagra, Neumann, EMT, AKG MicroTech Gefell and Beyerdynamic – was used in every production step exclusively. sds does not use any compressors or limiters as a matter of principle.

After the third record, the independent German media company Edel AG became aware of sds and started the label "Triple A" with Birgit and Dirk, for which they recorded and/or produced albums of Joo Kraus, Leon Russell, The New Mastersounds and Dephazz among others.

Later, the remastering of albums of the legendary German label MPS, whose catalogue was taken over by Edel AG, was added. Among others the 6-LP-Oscar-Peterson-Box "Exclusively For My Friends" and the 7-LP-George-Duke-Box "The Era Will Prevail" were released.

The DSD 256 files you find at NativeDSD from sds were transferred title by title directly from the analog master tape and not edited afterwards. Since the start and end of the songs were no longer trimmed, the playing times of the files may vary slightly from those on the LP. For the Analog to Digital Conversion of the four sds-albums a Playback Designs Pinot was used.

In his main job Dirk is the publisher and chief editor of the German high-end online magazine hifistatement.net.

Goodbye Pork Pie Hat is bassist Dieter Ilg's second album at NativeDSD following his earlier release Bass. It is a Stereo Analog Recording, transferred from the Analog Master Tape to Stereo DSD 256 by by Dirk Sommer of Sommelier du Son. It is a DSD Exclusive, Not Available on SACD release.

All of Europe loved this sound: The saxophone, the passion, the irascible pain, the tears of lava - the Mariano sound. This unmistakable sound has accompanied us for decades in jazz bands, rock bands, world music bands, Shelly Manne’s cool jazz quintet, and in the red hot music of Charles Mingus, Pork Pie, Embryo, The United Jazz & Rock Ensemble, Eberhard Weber’s Colors, Rabih Abou-Khalil, Konstantin Wecker, The Karnataka College and in countless other small, intimate, highly personal bands.

The smallest, most intimate was the duo with Dieter Ilg – just saxophone and bass. Almost too private to reach any outside ears. Too intensive to simply check it off and file it away as just an ordinary musical experience. Charlie Mariano and Dieter Ilg were brotherly partners for almost a decade, on and off the stage, until just very recently when Mariano passed away. “Later, this duo will be called legendary”, a music magazine wrote five years ago. “Later” is today.

It is easy to understand what is happening in this music, just impossible to put into words. Already with the first few notes of “Randy”, a door is opened into a room where the listener has rarely entered. Every note has its own meaning and its own life as does every breath, every silent note, and every reverberation. Seemingly without transition, the alto sax breaks from a meditative into an expressive, almost furious state, volcanically rising into “the high Himalayan region” as Dieter Ilg once expressed it. He always found the duo constellation with Charlie Mariano to be both hard and easy at the same time: It was easy to make musical sense with Charlie without any distractions, worrying who the band leader was. It was hard as a bassist “to be challenged every second being perceived as the harmony and rhythm accompanying instruments – like the piano and drums- while playing the four strings of the bass. To fill everything that there was to fill and not to say what was not to be said.” Here Dieter Ilg plays the necessary, the possible, the correct. The inspiration never lets up – gentle and burning.

It is beautiful that this legendary (now historical) duo has been finally captured – pure, vibrant and complete with the technical devotion of a sound enthusiast. A kind of epilogue – a finale and epitaph in every respect – “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” performed in the chapel of Solitude Palace near Stuttgart. The music comes from a different sounding hall – a farewell hall. Charles Mingus composed this half blues, half ballad piece as a musical obituary to Lester Young, the great saxophone hero of swing, bop and cool jazz. Many musicians of Charlie Mariano’s generation spent their life playing only bop and cool jazz. For Mariano, however, the music of his early years was more of a stepping-stone to other musical worlds - into Europe and India. Even more moving is that he returned here to the musical funeral oration of the bassist Mingus, in the essential reduction to sax and bass. When Charlie tells us the story of Lester on the sax, he tells the story of all great saxophonists. Also his own.

Dieter Ilg - Bass
Charlie Mariano - Saxophone
Bass is a two microphone recording featuring Dieter Ilg on Double Bass. For this new edition of the album at Native DSD, the Original Analog Master Tape was transferred to Stereo DSD 256 using the Playback Designs Pinot Analog to DSD 256 Converter.

The album was recorded at Schloss Elmau in April 2008 with two microphones - a Neumann SM 69 FET (X-Y) for the Double Bass and a AKG 422 (Blumlein) for Ambience. It was originally released on Vinyl LP and is now available as a Stereo DSD Download at NativeDSD.

Producer Dirk Sommer tells us "A solo double bass album is no small challenge - in more than one respect. First off, of course, is the musician, who has to rely on his own skills and inspiration all by himself. Dieter Ilg can draw on a huge repertoire of technical virtuosity, and the fact that he is his only dialogue partner on stage does not scare him: "The essential part of life consists of self-talk." If these are run with so much wit and circle around such interesting topics, it would simply be unforgivable to withhold them from the public. The disc is also a challenge for the producers. Because this is about great music and not about great deals with a mass-produced, all-purpose product.

The technical challenges were lots of fun. Since there are naturally few sounds in a solo bass that could mask any band or amplifier noise in the mid-high range, technical purism was the top priority: The signals of two stereo microphones were transferred to a quarter inch tape, a so-called session tape, through a mixer with the sound control switched off. The pieces were then cut out of their environment and glued together in the correct order. The copying of the songs from the session tapes would have only worsened the distance between them. And we have also renounced dynamics processing or filtering out hard-to-reproduce frequencies. Although the record would have sounded reasonably passable on mediocre systems as well, it considerably diminished the enjoyment of a high-quality reproduction chain. Therefore, the music was played without any mastering from the tape directly into the cutting system. After a direct cut, this is the shortest path from the instrument to the cutting stylus: cut directly from the session tapes.

Our search for purism didn't stop there however - after several conversations with Dieter Ilg we ultimately settled for nine cuts separated by only one single edit. It is a DSD Exclusive, Not Available on SACD release.

Originally recorded in 2011 as a special analogue edition, this album features impressive variations of Verdi's master opera "Otello" by Germany's leading bassist Dieter Ilg. In a trio with Rainer Böhm (piano) and Patrice Heral (drums). Otello performed Live at Schloss Elmau in Germany.

In the fourth act of Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Otello’ the story culminates with Othello, frantic with jealousy, planning to murder his wife Desdemona. At this point you hear Verdi’s stroke of genius – a powerful bass line that goes right through you, and for bass players this line has been one of the highlights of classical music ever since. Dieter Ilg discovered it early in his career and it has been the initial part of his daily practice ever since.

Nevertheless, the road to Ilg’s first album on ACT, ‘Otello Live at Schloss Elmau’, was a long one; an internationally famous bass player, he has had a remarkable 20-year career outside classical music... Searching for a recognizable project that would suit him, Ilg turned to his long-standing passion for Verdi and began to rediscover it. “Otello is an inspiration,” he says. “It is continuously in motion. Just take a look at Verdi’s harmonic turns that have often been used in jazz, but just in a different way. This is a perfect example of bridging the gap. Equally important is the dramatic component of the music that can be created through the individual interpretations and improvisations.” For this project he not only returned to the line-up he had favoured in the early stages of his career, but also found the two ideal musicians for his trio.

The pianist Rainer Böhm had first attracted Ilg’s attention in 2007, when he was judging the Jazzhaus piano competition which Böhm won. In the meantime, Böhm has been awarded with several other important accolades – most recently he followed in Ilg’s footsteps by winning the Jazzpreis Baden-Württemberg. The style of the French drummer and percussionist Patrice Heral is also one of a kind - it varies from subtle passages to powerful solos with loops and mouth percussion. Perfectly fitting alongside Ilg’s singing bass, these two accompanists are the ideal choice. The trio precision in the use of musical expressions is balanced through their recognition of the importance of pauses, as well as the power of calmness.
