Parsing nested tuplets and tuning microtonal harmonies is an intense bit of business, and often, it is a salty one-liner or vocal impersonation of Aaron Neville that comes to the rescue when the pressure reaches Defcon 2. Humor is also so much more than a setup and tag, though. I think an All Riley album makes sense, because the five piano-four-hand pieces from The Heaven Ladder, Book 5 commissioned by Sarah Cahill are all very different from each other, and so are the other four pieces on the CD.\u003cbr\u003eWhen did you first play a Terry Riley piece, either as a soloist, with other ensembles, or together as ZOFO? Can you talk about the emotions you felt the first time you played Riley?\u003cbr\u003eKeisuke: “In C” with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players was my first Riley piece. I was really astonished how different his piano-four-hand music was from it. Eva: For me it was “Cinco de Mayo.” We had a lot of fun with it right away. How did your collaboration with Terry Riley begin? Who approached whom? Eva: We’re very grateful to our friend Katrina Krimsky for connecting us with Terry. She’s very close to the Rileys and has been playing the “pulse” for “In C” over many years. She gave us the score for “Cinco de Mayo” after one of our first ZOFO concerts and told Terry about us. We sent him a concert recording of “Cinco” and he then emailed us, saying how happy he was with it. He also sent us the four remaining pieces from The Heaven Ladder, Book 5. The Japanese colored woodblock prints were the most avidly collected of all prints, and Debussy enthusiastically embraced the French fascination regarding the Orient and Japan in particular, ‘Le japonisme.’ (It was at this time that the famous French pickup line appeared: “Would you like to come up and see my Japanese prints?”) Debussy incorporates the pentatonic scale as well as bells, gongs, and gamelans, all suffused with a luminous atmosphere, stylized delicacy, elegant dance movement, and rhythmic counterpoint.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eII. La soirée dans Grenade (Evening in Granada) is one of Debussy’s three Spanish piano pieces. His uncanny insight into the Spanish soul is particularly remarkable considering that he never even visited his neighboring country. It employs his novel compositional technique of alternating and juxtaposing various musical ideas rather than developing them, thereby creating a very modern and almost cinematic sense of splicing, fragments presented without transition. In the age before recorded media, the infrequency of live performance also made accessibility to the music-loving public an issue; composers and publishers increasingly responded with the preparation of piano duet and other “reductions” that could be read by amateurs for entertainment and educational purposes. Solos in the String Quartet repertoire are traditionally short and travel between the voices quite frequently. Here I try to expand the idea of the individual solo and the result is Opacity, four columns representing each instruments of the String Quartet.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe first movement More belongs to the second violin. The next movement Opacity is a cello solo, the third Elegia a viola lament. The piece is dreamy and nostalgic and in form resembles a chaconne, where the same chord progression repeats itself throughout. The recollections appear abruptly and vanish quickly, some of them distant but others more focused and clear. Daníel Bjarnason’s music has been described as “coming eerily close to defining classical music’s undefinable brave new world” (Time Out New York).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“Nebraska Quartet was commissioned by The Chiara String Quartet and premiered at Lincoln Center’s Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, January 2011. The piece also marked the first formal occasion where I was being asked to write a piece of concert music. Chiara was in residency at the University of Nebraska at the time, so I immediately had the idea to base the new piece on my imagined impressions of these faraway landscapes. Two pieces that I had written just prior as a part of my score for the film ‘Draumalandið’ (Dreamland), ‘Past Tundra’ and ‘Nowhere Land’ were arranged for the Chiara Quartet for the same concert. Songs- Specific songs are included for performance in the text of Shakespeare’s plays. Shakespeare authored the lyrics to some of these songs but also incorporated popular songs known to his contemporary audiences. The plays did not include notation of the tunes of these songs. Whether the sturm und drang of the G Minor and its Haydn-esque representation of drama, the early Beethovenian poise, manner, and delight in the D Major, or the unabashed dramatic and unapologetic severity in the A Minor, (Lord Byrons Manfred was written the same year!), these works show us young Schubert's boundless expressive spirit.\r\n\r\nThe violin is a rare find, built by Franz Kinberg after the Second World War and set up for late Classical and early Romantic historical instrument performance. The gut-strung violin is paired with an extraordinary bow made by John Dodd, London, circa 1800. This pre-modern, transitional bow is a perfect example of the bows still in favor in Vienna at the time the Sonatinas were composed.\r\n\r\nThe piano is an Érard concert grand, built in Paris circa 1835. It is in immaculate condition, superbly conditioned by Frits Janmaat at Maison Érard in Amsterdam. One of them is to have been born in Iceland, growing up in a protected environment that leaves one with the feeling (or illusion) that one is free to do anything he wants. Then again moving to Estonia to study composition made me re-evaluate my perceptions on life and art so far. The brisk salty breeze of the ocean got replaced by scent of burning wood rising from the chimneys of old houses near the forest and the playful indie scene of Reykjavík by sophisticated academic concert life in ancient churches and guildhalls of Tallinn. It was the environment where I found my musical language, plunged into East-European art and history, travelled and made friends, connected deeply with the spiritual approach Estonians have to music and their somewhat ancient character. One of those old souls I got to know is my wife Tui who sings on this album.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOur singer-composer collaboration started right away and has tied together our professional and personal lives in an especially fulfilling way. The compositions on this album illustrate the shift of us moving back to Iceland and continuing life there with a new perspective. The oldest piece on the album was composed in 2011 when we lived the slow-paced life of young parents in the countryside-like outskirts of Tallinn whereas the latest piece was composed in Iceland and premiered in Berlin 2018. The texts chosen for the compositions demonstrate my influences during the time quite appropriately. Stalker, Tarkovsky‘s famous screenplay from where I borrowed the monologue, was shot in Tallinn and cleverly displays references to Estonia‘s troubled history. Wheel Crosses under Moss contains excerpts of folk hymns from Vormsi, an island off the West coast of Estonia once inhabited by Swedes, until the whole community was evacuated in fear of the Soviet Army. Other texts are by Icelandic artist and poetess Ásdís Sif Gunnarsdóttir, whom I have collaborated with on numerous occasions. In the album‘s title-piece poem, Atonement, Ásdís Sif sensitively describes a feeling of re-connecting with herself and finding inner peace. It was created and recorded during the Covid-19 pandemic. Surrick is well-known for her many recordings with the group she founded in 1998, Ensemble Galilei. McFarlane is the founder of Ayreheart and a founding member of the Baltimore Consort. Their album includes recordings of new music for lute and viola da gamba as well as arrangements of some of their favorite tunes.\r\n\u003cp id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1607026570769_993\" class=\"\"\u003eMcFarlane told us: \u003cem\u003e\"We had all the time in the world. We had three months. Our Saturday rehearsals turned into Saturdays and Sundays. If the gamba is going to sing a traditional Irish tune, why not a recitative and aria by Telemann? If she’s going to sing something by Telemann, why not an Ave Maria, written by Gounod and based on thematic material belonging to Bach?\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eIf we loved it, the answer was, “Yes.”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eAs the pandemic increased in its fierce destruction, I sat alone, practicing. Some of us play from memory, some with the music in front of us. One night I began Amazing Grace. I had always played it in G major – there are lots of double stops easily available (playing more than one string at a time) and the instrument is super resonant in that key, but this time I tried \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eC major. There was a kind of openness and freedom that had been hidden from me. I’ve played that piece for decades, but I had never heard it like that before. I sent a recording to Lindsey. I called Ronn.
