The earliest works, small-scale rococo trifles in which the violin played a subsidiary part and the keyboard (virtually certain to be a harpsichord at that date) was the star performer, date from the time of his first major tour through Europe. Leopold Mozart had four of these early sonatas published in Paris in 1764, two as opus 1 and two as opus 2. In the following year, he had another series of six sonatas published in London as opus 3. Yet another series of six sonatas, opus 4, written in the Hague by Wolfgang (and possibly by Leopold?) in 1766, appeared that same year, both there and in Amsterdam. Then Mozart's production of violin and piano sonatas was interrupted by a twelve-year silence. Not until his stay in Mannheim in 1777 and 1778 would he complete four new sonatas, in which the violin's role had grown considerably, offering a genuine partnership to the piano. In the summer of 1778, Mozart added two more new sonatas to the series of six Paris sonatas, and published the set there as Opus 1, as if he intended his mature oeuvre to begin at this point. Then, after another interval of three years, came the six sonatas published in 1781 as Opus 2 by Artaria in Vienna, Mozart's new and ultimate place of residence. The powerful emotions connected with this event were a stimulus to Schumann's creative impulses, for he was a Romantic through and through. It was at this time that he composed the deeply personal Davidsbndlertnze -18 dances inspired by the imaginary league of David. This fellowship, invented by Schumann, consisted of Schumann's own alter egos, plus a number of well-respected musicians and friends including Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. The group was established as a way of fighting against the Philistines; it was Schumann's response to contemporary musical trends which he saw as cheap, excessively virtuosic, and superficial. Two of the Davidsbndler, Schumann's alter egos Florestan and Eusebius, occupy a central place in all of the composer's works. Florestan, is extroverted, lively, and wild; Eusebius is intimate, gentle, and shy. The tensions between these two extremes also provides a narrative thread for the Davidsbndlertnze. Schumann placed the signature of one character or the other at the end of each of the eighteen dances; some are even signed by both characters. At the end of the cycle, the second dance, one of Eusebius's melodies, returns, only to be cruelly interrupted by Florestan. But Eusebius, nevertheless, has the last word. Over the last dance, Schumann wrote Ganz zum berflu meinte Eusebius noch folgendes; dabei sprach aber viel Seligkeit au seinen Augen. [Eusebius expressed the following opinion, quite unnecessarily; but at the time, great happiness spoke from his eyes. In 1838, a year after the Davidsbndlertnze, Schumann composed the Arabeske. Peaceful, equable and timeless are words befitting this little composition, meant to be a delicate ornament. This sonata was written for the great cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. Sergei Prokofiev also wrote his sonata for this great cellist, but with quite a different result. In this sonata we find the real romantic Prokofiev: beautiful colours and enchanting fairy tale-like melodies. The third piece, Grave, by the Polish composer Lutoslawski was written ‘in memoriam’ for Stephan Jarocinski, musicologist and a close friend of Lutoslawski’s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJoris van den Berg and Martijn Willers were prize winners at the Amsterdam Cello Biënnale, the Johannes Brahms Chamber Music Competition in Austria and the Pierre Fournier Award in London.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs laureates of Dutch Classical Talent Tour \u0026amp; Award they will per- form in 11 of the most important concert halls of The Netherlands from October 2013. In summer 2014 Van den Berg and Willers will make a big concert tour in China. Looking back on his early efforts in the summer of 1824, just a few months after he had completed his Death and the Maiden Quartet D.810, he seems to have had scant regard for them. Responding to a letter from his elder brother Ferdinand, who described his pleasure at rediscovering those youthful pieces, Schubert told him, ‘it would be better for you to keep to quartets other than mine, for there is nothing to them, except perhaps that you like them, as you like everything of mine’.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSchubert had made a brief return to string quartet writing at the end of 1820, in a manner that showed his ambition to produce a work more intense and dramatic than anything he had attempted in the genre before. But just as his first serious efforts to master the piano sonata some three years earlier had resulted in several aborted projects, so, too, the string quartet of 1820 was destined to remain unfinished. Over the string quartet, as over the piano sonata, loomed the giant figure of Beethoven (‘Who can do anything after Beethoven?’,2 Schubert once complained to his friend Josef von Spaun); and perhaps it was unwise of Schubert to have chosen to make his return to the quartet arena with a piece in C minor – the key Beethoven had made so much his own. In terms of its actual material the one portion of the work Schubert did manage to complete – the so-called Quarttetsatz, or ‘Quartet Movement’, D.703 – is of the highest quality, though it is possible that he remained dissatisfied with its unorthodox form. At any rate, he abandoned the score after having composed no more than forty bars of its slow movement. On February 26, 1899, Gustav Mahler gave in Vienna the first performance of the Sixth, in his own version, in which he substantially reworked both the instrumentation and notes and showed no aversion to sweeping cuts. The first printed score of Bruckner’s Sixth appeared in the summer of 1899, however it deviated greatly from the original work. Largely responsible for this was Josef Schalk (1857-1900), a highly respected conductor in Vienna and an early Bruckner admirer (Bruckner often referred to him as “Herr Generalissimus”). Did Bruckner ever hear his “keckste” composition performed? That cannot be answered with any certainty.\u003cbr\u003eWe know that during a concert in Vienna on February 11, 1883, the Vienna Philharmonic performed only the Adagio and Scherzo, conducted by Properly speaking it continues for some time afterwards as well, although carol singing, indoors or outside, tends to stop rather abruptly once the presents have been unwrapped.\u003cbr\u003eI don’t know if my musical colleagues have similar experiences – I expect they do – but my musical encounter with Christmas tends to run well into the New Year, either with more seasonal concerts or a carols recording on the back of December’s music-making. And it picks up again quite early in the summer when I start to plan the final details of my carol concerts for the following winter. Actually there is nothing I enjoy more on a hot June afternoon than to cool off indoors by playing through some favourite carols and perhaps starting to work on a new arrangement of one tune or another. This may all seem a bit weird to more normal people, for whom the onset of Christmas is probably signaled by the appearance of decorations in shops, but it was ever thus in my experience.\u003cbr\u003eThis is the fourth in a series of carol recordings for harmonia mundi that have featured a number of my own carol arrangements. The Japanese colored woodblock prints were the most avidly collected of all prints, and Debussy enthusiastically embraced the French fascination regarding the Orient and Japan in particular, ‘Le japonisme.’ (It was at this time that the famous French pickup line appeared: “Would you like to come up and see my Japanese prints?”) Debussy incorporates the pentatonic scale as well as bells, gongs, and gamelans, all suffused with a luminous atmosphere, stylized delicacy, elegant dance movement, and rhythmic counterpoint.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eII. He plays double bass in jazz trios there on Saturday nights. We became friends and started talking about recording a few songs. A while later he brought in 5 guys and a bunch of instruments and recorded with us on ‘\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.nativedsd.com\/catalogue\/albums\/jl002-8-ensembles-in-1-bit\/\"\u003e8 Ensembles in 1 Bit\u003c\/a\u003e’ in March 2015.  Quickly after this project, some plans on a complete album came about, with music from composers that he grew up listening to, and some of his own compositions.\r\n\r\nIn November of 2015, two days were picked, and we rolled back into the stage at MCO in Hilversum, The Netherlands, with a Merging HAPI and analog mixing boards, carbon fiber cables and top-notch mics. The support microphone for the vocals was the Sonodore MPM-91.
