The band direct-to-disc recorded 4 sides of the double album at 45 RPM. The recording was done on the Direct Metal Mastering cutting machine, using High-End analogue equipments only.\r\n\r\nDjabe is known for the excellent sound of its recordings and vinyl records. They recorded several of their albums using analogue technology, and they always cut their records from analogue master tapes, but they have not yet recorded any of their albums directly to record.\r\n\r\nThe high-quality technique of the ARTONE studio and the professional knowledge of the studio’s staff make the result unique in the band’s history. The concerts, which were a great success among the audience, were recorded by the band with a 24-track analog tape recorder and made a 34-minute selection of the material, which was also cut to a disc at 45 RPM using DMM lathe. In this project Maestro Accardo masterfully interprets the Sonatas for Violin and Piano n.4 and n.8 by Ludwig Van Beethoven with the pianist \u003cstrong\u003eLaura Manzini\u003c\/strong\u003e.\r\n\r\nI recorded this album at Sala dell'Ermellino - Casa della Musica in Milan on 23th-24th November 2019. For this recording I brought all my equipment both analog (Ampex ATR 102 Electronic Tube Ampex Model 351-1965, 2 tracks, 1\/2 inch, 30ips modified by David Manley) and digital (Pyramix Recorder, dCS A \/ D and D \/ A converters). For this prestigious recording I used the legendary original Neumann U47, U48 tube microphones from the years 1947 and 1949 with a very natural tone using field effect bi-microphone techniques. These microphones have an important history: they are in fact the original microphones used to record, among others, the Beatles performances in the Abbey Road Studio and by RCA for the “Living Stereo” recordings.\r\nThe sound I can capture with these legendary microphones is perfectly in line with my sonic taste. No other microphone has such a true timbre and the ability to engrave all the nuances of sound and all the richness of the harmonics. The uniqueness of these microphones is linked to their ability to make a perfect \"sound photograph\" and to put the music perfectly placed in the sound space chosen for the recording\r\n\r\nA state-of-the-art system with no sound manipulation, no equalization, no reverb, no compression and expansion ... but natural sound with true timbre to best enhance the acoustics of the Sala dell'Ermellino. Fonè has been offering for 40 years recordings made in the name of technological refinement and aimed at recovering the original musical atmospheres. The result of this recording is fantastic. With this recording I wanted to give the listener a unique experience. It is as if the listener were sitting on an armchair positioned in the ideal point in the Sala dell'Ermellino. In this position the sound has a field effect and its depth, width and height are very noticeable. Steve writes that the work is “similar to my pieces from the 1960s and ‘70s in that there are repeating patterns played on both marimbas, one or more beats out of phase, creating a series of two part unison canons. However, these patterns are more melodically developed, change frequently and each is usually repeated no more than three times, similar to my more recent work. The piece is also considerably more difficult to play than my earlier ones and requires two virtuosic performers.” Our two virtuosi are Joe Beribak on the left and Katy La Favre on the right.\r\nNext follows Lou Harrison’s Canticle No. 3, written in 1940\/1941, and premiered in 1942. Essentially a concerto for ocarina and percussion ensemble, Canticle No. 3 uses the haunting primitive sound of the ocarina (a Mexican terra-cotta flute which looks a little like a knobby sweet potato or cuddly sea creature) and a steel string guitar, both a strong contrast with Harrison’s creative assortment of percussion instruments. Joe Beribak plays ocarina and Derek Tywoniuk plays guitar.\r\n\r\nWe experimented with our musicians in many different locations for this recording, since we used one stereo AKG C-24 microphone and no mixer for all of our takes on this album. As Joe reminisced, “some instruments (like tom toms and snare drums) were designed for use with a modern orchestra, while other instruments (like the ocarina and teponaztli) are ethnic instruments designed to be played in intimate settings. So we adjusted our setup to create the balance and tone quality we wanted. We brought the ocarina closer to center, and we actually rotated the toms 90 degrees counter-clockwise in order to balance these two voices properly on the recording. As a result we needed to modify the way we cued each other, since our relative positions were radically different from the way we stand when we perform this piece live.
