Dolby Atmos

Dolby Atmos is an encoded 24 bit, 48 kHz PCM audio format, which adds 4 channels of height information to 5 Channel and 7 Channel Surround Sound. It is often referred to as 5.1.4 Channel Immersive Audio or 7.1.4 Channel Immersive Audio (a reference to adding 4 height channels to 5 Channel, 5.1 Channel , 7 Channel or 7.1 Channel Surround Sound recordings).

Dolby Atmos introduces a Height dimension to movies and music, which transforms and augments their emotional impact. The Dolby Atmos format brings immersive 3D audio to music.

To hear the 4 height channels and the 5.1 or 7.1 Surround Sound audio in the Dolby Atmos encoded files, the listener will need a Dolby Atmos decoder in their music system. Without the Dolby Atmos decoder, the Dolby Atmos FLAC files will play as standard 5 Channel, 5.1 Channel, 7 Channel or 7.1 Channel FLAC Surround Sound. (The decoder is what provides 4 Dolby Atmos height channels).

To play Dolby Atmos music downloads from 2L (7.1.4 Channel Immersive Audio) and the Aliud, Anderson Audio NY and TRPTK Dolby Atmos music downloads (5.1.4 Channel Immersive Audio) that are available at NativeDSD, you will need an Audio Video Receiver (AVR) or a preamp/processor that supports Dolby Atmos.

These AVRs and preamp/processors will include a Dolby Atmos decoder and will handle all of the necessary signal processing and rendering. You’ll find a growing selection from leading AVR and component manufacturers.
