Soon after the beginning of the 20th century Scriabin began to fall under the spell of the occult and mystical ideas that were so much in the air at the time, particularly in Russia. Starting from a fascination with Nietzsche, he eventually arrived at a philosophy that exalted the individual ego and the senses, totally ignoring morality, politics, history, society and, frequently, common sense. His copious writings on the subject are hard to take seriously, but these obsessions were indissolubly linked to his extraordinary musical development, stimulated as it was by his complete self-absorption.
