Bach: Partitas for Viola da Gamba

Can a piece remain itself when the instrument changes? Teodoro Baù takes that question, which he frames through the paradox of the Ship of Theseus, into one of the most demanding works in the string repertoire. He presents Bach’s Partitas BWV 1002, 1004 and 1006, written for solo violin, in his own adaptation for viola da gamba. The music is transposed down a tone and otherwise kept note for note, so the violin’s top E string becomes the gamba’s D string. The Partita No. 2 ends with the monumental Ciaccona, nearly fifteen minutes long. The lute-like polyphony and the viol’s roots in the French dance suite give these familiar pieces a voice that is both old and new.

Baù follows his acclaimed Bach sonatas with harpsichordist Andrea Buccarella, which drew praise from Gramophone, and here plays alone. His booklet essay argues that Baroque repertoire was always fluid and that transcription is a creative act, a “negotiation” with the composer. Recorded in Padua in September 2021, the album runs to 83 minutes. Baù plays a Sergio Gistri viol, made in 2006 after Michel Colichon (Paris, 1691).

Teodoro Baù, viola da gamba
