Born in Florence in 1632, he had moved to France as a teenager to teach Italian to Louis XIV’s cousin Anne-Marie-Louise d’Orléans, the Duchess of Montpensier. Having already joined the service of Louis XIV as a violinist and dancer, in 1653, aged 20, he became compositeur de la musique instrumentale.
