We are in Greenland.\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eGreenland in March.\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eAnd somewhere, perhaps close by, is my husband Andreas.\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eI took off my jacket and sat down on it.\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eI have started to freeze to death.\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cem\u003eThere are certain things I know.\u003c\/em\u003e\r\n\r\nA female voice speaks throughout Degrees of White. \u003cstrong\u003eJohan Harstad\u003c\/strong\u003e’s biting text peels away the various layers of her personality, while \u003cstrong\u003eNils Henrik Asheim\u003c\/strong\u003e constructs a soundscape of an infinite number of layers.\r\n\r\nWe take a journey into the frost, through an unpredictable web of intersecting motions, from the beautiful and fragile, to the raw and desperate. The protagonist tells her story across several layers of time -through flashbacks and through actual observations of her condition. She has gone on holiday to Greenland with her husband, but they have split up. As she speaks, we realize that she is going through the various stages of frostbite.\r\n\r\nThe work contains elements of a symphony, monodrama, radio theater, and sound art. The whole must be heard in order to be described. The composer himself says:\r\n\r\n\"Degrees of White is, without comparison, the most complex work I have ever created, and strangely enough, also the one that speaks most directly. It has been a somewhat shaky process to work through its creation, from the very beginning fifteen years ago until recently, where I have used this available “corona time” to complete the mix of the tracks of the orchestra, electronics, voice, and sounds created by materials such as gravel, shells, glass, and Styrofoam.\"\r\n\r\nDegrees of White was commissioned and premiered by the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra in 2007. \u003cstrong\u003eChristian Eggen\u003c\/strong\u003e leads \u003cstrong\u003eThe Norwegian Radio Orchestra\u003c\/strong\u003e on this recording. \u003cstrong\u003eLaila Goody\u003c\/strong\u003e reads the Norwegian version and the English is by \u003cstrong\u003ePetronella Barker\u003c\/strong\u003e.
