Two of them are by 19th-century composers who were fascinated by the music of North Africa and the Middle East – \u003cstrong\u003eSaint-Saëns\u003c\/strong\u003e’ work for military band\u003cem\u003e, L’Orient et occident\u003c\/em\u003e (1869), and \u003cstrong\u003eAndré Caplet\u003c\/strong\u003e’s three-movement \u003cem\u003eSuite Persane\u003c\/em\u003e (1900).\r\nThe disc also contains two works commissioned by Oslo Kammerakademi: the story of \u003cem\u003eThe Last Days of Sultan Selim III\u003c\/em\u003e (2011) retold in music by Turkish composer \u003cstrong\u003eMert Karabey\u003c\/strong\u003e, and the album’s title work, \u003cstrong\u003eGisle Kverndokk\u003c\/strong\u003e’s suite \u003cem\u003eThe Silk Road\u003c\/em\u003e (2017), inspired by music that might have been encountered along a trade route between Venice and China.\r\n\r\nOslo Kammerakademiwas founded in 2009 by oboist and artistic director David Friedemann Strunck, and performs chamber music for winds with the historical Harmoniemusik instrumentation as a foundation – from its origin in Vienna in the 1780s to the music of our own time.
