About Native's Founding

Real DSD 64, DSD 128, DSD 256 & DXD Master Recordings

It started with a simple idea: make Direct Stream Digital available to listeners anywhere in the world. Original DSD Edit Masters, plus analog master tapes transferred to DSD, bringing you as close to the original performance as possible.

NativeDSD.com was founded in 2013 and launched in early 2014 by Jared Sacks and his son Jonas. Jared is a recording engineer and the founder of Channel Classics Records, which he started in 1990 after moving to the Netherlands, where he had trained and worked as a horn player. He was among the first engineers anywhere to record directly in DSD rather than convert to it, and has spent more than two decades refining that approach across hundreds of releases. Jonas, a cinematographer by training, brought the digital and commercial side of the operation.

They began with the Channel Classics catalogue and two smaller labels, around 170 albums in total. The idea was to create a single place where listeners could find the best recordings in the world at the highest resolution available, in Stereo and Multichannel, sourced directly from the labels recording in DSD and DXD.

Jared Sacks in his mastering studio

As a professional musician, when I became a classical music label owner, it was my passion to not only bring great music to our listeners, but also to transfer the emotion of that music's creation. I found that recording in DSD best met that need, and it is why we started this platform.

The listeners at home now hear what the recording engineers, musicians, and mastering engineers heard in the recording: the sound, levels, balance, interpretation, ambiance, overtones, and the emotions, exactly the way they are intended to be heard.

Jonas Sacks filming on location

Artists and engineers are my favorite type of people. When I started photographing and filming artists for Jared's label Channel Classics, I knew I wanted to be involved in a bigger part of the production process.

Starting this platform was an answer to that longing: delivering the beautiful engineering done by my father and all our other labels to a worldwide audience.

— Jonas Sacks

Milestones

2013 Jared and Jonas start brainstorming Native DSD Music

Jared and son Jonas start brainstorming an idea for the company and settle on Native DSD Music, later compacted to NativeDSD Music, today a recognized name in the audiophile industry. The website is developed over mid-2013 and launches in beta form in December 2013. The team is supplemented by audiophile enthousiasts and professionals in the US.

2014 CES Las Vegas debut, and the store opens to the public

At CES 2014 in Las Vegas, the founding team meets in person for the first time and launches the store, talking to industry leaders and brands about DSD, still a quiet and unfamiliar corner of the show floor back then. On January 7, 2014, the site goes live to the public with the Channel Classics Records catalogue and two other labels, around 170 albums in total.

NativeDSD Music created the first-ever DSD 512 Sampler album in May 2019, timed to Munich High End, as content for hardware partners presenting new DACs and players capable of DSD 512 playback. Later that year, NativeDSD again receives the Positive Feedback Brutus Award. Read more in this help article.

2020 Ground-up new website, improved Downloader, fifth Brutus Award

In 2020, NativeDSD launches a redesigned website: more traffic capacity, bundled products, a faster catalog browse page, and comprehensive filtering. In December, an improved NativeDSD Downloader app arrives for Mac and Windows, offering controlled track-by-track downloads that meaningfully improve success rates for large files, especially in more remote areas.

At the start of 2021, NativeDSD is honored to receive the Brutus Award from Positive Feedback's David Robinson for the fifth time.

2021 Two Downloader updates, new labels join

Two updates land for the Downloader app, and several new labels join the store this year.

2022 Monthly NativeDSD Plus, more Downloader updates

Alongside the yearly NativeDSD Plus subscription, a monthly option arrives. FLAC 96 and FLAC 192 rates are now included in the lower-rate access for Plus members, plus further Downloader updates.

2023 Browser downloads for Linux, bigger main menu

A new feature lets Linux users download purchases straight from the browser, since the NativeDSD Downloader app is Mac- and Windows-only. The site also gets a bigger, more extensive main menu for quicker access to key parts of the store.

2024 Ten years, and the biggest catalogue growth yet

NativeDSD turns ten. It is also the biggest year for new music in the store's history, with close to 500 albums added, including three orchestral labels arriving through the LSO Live family: Colin Currie Records, The Cleveland Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. We also launch the Doofinder search feature, making it faster and easier to find and discover new music.

2025 A new home for the music, and Audiophile Society joins

We move the entire music library off Amazon's cloud and onto our own servers, paired with a new global delivery network. Every album you buy now travels a more direct route to your machine, which matters when the files are as large as ours.

David Chesky's Audiophile Society label joins the store with close to 40 albums, adding a deep catalogue of jazz and audiophile recordings.

2026 A new store and a new Downloader, rebuilt from the ground up

After more than a decade on the same platform, we begin rebuilding the entire store from scratch: faster pages, a browsing and buying experience that finally works properly on a phone, and a foundation we can keep improving without fighting the software underneath.

A new NativeDSD Downloader is being built alongside it. Where the old app was essentially a download queue, this one opens on My Catalog: every album you have ever bought, laid out by cover art, searchable across albums, tracks, artists and SKU. Downloads run in the background with speed and progress visible in the sidebar, so a large multichannel set can keep fetching while you carry on browsing your library.
