Sonically this album is a true wonder. Pure analogue sound and top-notch quality.

2L recording quality is always a given. Excellent. With this recording, I can hear a passion and professionalism in the girls singing to a level I've never hear prior. Everyone in the production took this seriously and this is reflected in a beautiful sounding album.
Quirine Viersen’s recording of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Complete Suites for Unaccompanied Cello (BarcaNova Records, 2018) is the purest expression of this music I have ever heard. She uses her dynamic touch to take the listener on a sensual ride, while always staying true to the journey of the music. In soft parts, she draws the listener in, begging for more. With her next surge, she delivers intensity to the limits.
Listening to it on speakers fills the room with waves that resonate with one’s body. Immersing oneself in it through headphones makes it seem like one can feel every fiber of the bow caressing the strings.
She makes it a personal experience without coming between the music and the listener. She is not so much playing the instrument as much as she is unleashing the beauty from it.
Thank you, Quirine Viersen, for sharing the life energy of this music!
All of the one microphone recordings are fantastic but this recording .... WOW. The extra microphones increase the degree of separation and clarity of each instrument and vocals. Such realism here. This album will exceed any expectations you can imagine in quality.
Album seems short, but the sound is intimate, the music inviting and engrossing, each ending leaves me wishing for more and so onto the next track. It’s the most rewarding 23 minutes I can find on an album. Glad it’s so strongly recommended by NativeDSD music reviewers.
Sonically the album sound is okay. Scholten's guitar tone is really good and the piano has rich tone, but the bass is muted and bloated at times. It sounds great when bowed, and that's rare on this album. The microphone is the best part of this whole experience. Musically the album feels like an improve ambient student project. The timing and dynamics are off, hollowness or lack of emotional connection IMO. Best track is Bocanegro, the piano does some real cool effects, Scholten plays with nice dynamics and his tone is so good(you can hear him snore a couple of times as he plays, very relaxed) and the bass is actually playing with the group. I would have liked to have more of this on the album. I see this is marketed as "silence music" well it sounds more like Jazz players attempting to do ambient music with countermelodies and muted serendipitous bass lines (last track should have been developed way more, sounded lazy) . Will be hard to listen to over and over. would not recommend this album. *DXD-Senn HDV820 amp - Senn HD800s cans - 5am/no coffee Mon.
This is a very enjoyable album to listen to. Missing is the fatiguing, narrow tunnel sounding audio emblematic of the limitations of 80's technology. Added is layering of the synthesizers in a wide soundstage and realism of vocals. Cleo's (believe that's her name) voice is beautiful and mainstream sounding. I'm glad she chose to record in high definition and join the revolution to leave CD/MP3 quality technology where it belongs- in the PAST!
This is the second album I have by this artist, the first being Use Me. I'd seen rave reviews about the artist and recording, and the reason I got this one was because I didn't 'get it' from that album. I couldn't gel with it because I found it mechanical and uninspired. So, I took a gamble at spending £20 on a high res version of this.
Unfortunately, it's not for me. I find it sounds like a recording of technically excellent musicians playing all the right notes without any flair or passion. Moreover, Fernandez, to me sounds like a very competent session singer. There is nothing in her voice or style, however, that touches my soul; and yet, to read the reviews one would expect something special. And the high-res format brings nothing to the table either.
I have thousands of excellent recordings of countless artists in many formats, played on a decent kit, which nearly all reach me in ways that excite or move me. And I have countless recordings that simply sound better than this. Including ones recorded by solo artists in their bedrooms. What am I missing with Vanessa Fernandez?
Three very talented musicians. Terrific arrangements on this album. The recording engineer, Dexter did an absolutely amazing job.
I've read that pianos (being such large instruments) can be difficult to accurately record. Well Dexter knows his stuff. This is the most lifelike recording of a piano I've ever heard. But that's just the piano. He also did a fantastic job with the drums and bass.
Listening to the 2 Channel. Used JRiver to covert it to FLAC 24 bit, 192 kHz to play through my Marantz SA-14SE. Wonderful dynamics and layered Sound Stage. Thinking how it could sound when played in DXD (352.8kHz).
I am not familiar with DXD, this is my first download of this format.
Waiting to check the Surround version, hopefully another level.
It’s the first time I come across the genre of ‘chansons’. Captivating sounds, masterful performance. Keeps me listening track after track. Thank you for making the album available in high rez.
One of the best interpretations I have ever heard.
In order to capture the great recording quality (DSD 256) in its entirety, high-quality equipment is required.
I listened to the CD edition of this album and was impressed.
I find it to be intimate music with a high degree of unpredictability. That makes it exciting!
I think Nina's text treatment is special. Also a lot of praise for the two other musicians.
I did not expect to enjoy this album as much as I do. The sound quality is exceptional as is with all albums from this label. If you need a French flavored album in your collection then this is ABSOLUTELY the one. This is especially so if your significant other gets in a romantic mood with French music.
I am amazed at the sound stage and realism present in this album. The album was recorded only in DSD64 and usually I can pick up on that from a slight step back on those two attributes as resolution decreases but this not the case here at all. It sounds incredibly like you are at a large live performance. I'm very happy with this purchase.
I noticed this album as a best seller at NativeDSD for a long time and finally purchased it. Now I realize why.
There is so much going on in these performances and they are all brought out in realistic detail onto a huge sound stage enabled by the high resolution DSD 256 used in this recording. This is an excellent "You are there at the performance" sounding album.
Unfortunately, she wants more then she can deliver. Instead of singing in her natural lower tone voice and getting a decent recording, she wants to mess with the highs and that is where everything falls apart. Between the uninspired texts and she trying to do more then actually can, you will need mid to high end audio gear to find enough enjoyment in the tracks. Even then it is just an OK experience.
I took a chance on this recording after reading that I could hear Gershwin play Gershwin. I mean, how could you not want to find out what this is all about? After listening to this album several times (I almost cannot stop playing it) I can attest that even without the Gershwin, I recommend buying this album. All of the music is wonderful. Melilo’s “A Sending” is a great new piece for me that had an immediate emotional impact when I listened to for the first time.
It is hard to appreciate the sound of a live horn section, and percussion section, as experienced in the concert hall. As a regular patron of live Seattle Symphony Orchestra performances for many years, sitting relatively close to the stage, I am are continually astounded by the sound quality of a live orchestra. The sound pressure emanating from the stage is amazing, particularly from the horns and the bigger drums. The clarity of the many other percussion instruments in this setting is hard to capture in a recording. So, I wondered if a recording of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy could capture that magic? I can now say that It most certainly does.
Being stuck at home most of the year, I have purchased, and listened to a fair amount music this year. There is still a little over two months to go, but this is currently album of the year for me.
