Traces by the Ardemus Saxophone Quartet is the ensemble’s debut album. The quartet includes 4 members from 4 different countries that met 4 years ago while studying at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Funding for their debut album was successfully crowd-funded in late 2018 and the 4-day recording session was completed a month later in December 2018.

Traces is a summary of the path we walked, the essence of who we are. In this program you will hear the music of Ligeti, Shostakovich, Glazounov, Debussy, Piazzolla, Biedenbender and Bach! These are some of our most beloved music and pieces of great significance to our story and development.

Trace: verb.to Find or Discover. noun. A path or track. This word sums up perfectly what this program is about: a journey of discovery.

In Traces, we set out to piece together what is in our identity, our music and our approach, delving deep into our stories of growth and accomplishments. We have chosen to record this program as a DSD Music Download (available at NativeDSD Music on April 5, 2019) as well as making it available on Stereo CD a month later (May 2019). It is a way to honor precious memories and to make our debut as an international chamber music ensemble a reality.

“Every relationship has its special moments: meeting for the first time, overcoming an obstacle together or losing track of time in each other’s company. These moments are points where individual’s stories become one. Milestones that define the path you follow together.

This album traces the path that we – the Ardemus Quartet – have pursued over the last few years. For us the works of Ligeti, Shostakovich, Glazunov, Debussy, Piazzolla, Biedenbender and Bach are those milestones. They remind us of wonderful concerts and inspiring coaching sessions but also of efforts and challenges. The music on this album made us into the ensemble we are today and gave us the opportunity to grow both as a group and as individuals. Even though we come from different countries, we found a common language through these works.”

Opus Klassiek

Four young musicians of international allure who started a saxophone quartet in 2014 quickly made a name for itself in the Netherlands as a finalist of the “Dutch Classical Talent Award 2017/18”, only one of the many prizes that the ensemble has won. The many concerts and performances at many music festivals also show that the Ardemus has developed into a top ensemble in a relatively short period of time. It often has to resort to arrangements – having regard to the limited repertoire for saxophone quartet – to which thanks to the impressive playing level, the ‘burning’ musicality and the also chameleon-like interpretations of this foursome in idiomatic terms one can have nothing against. Moreover, it can be refreshing to hear familiar pieces in a completely different way … In short, this debut clearly tastes like more!
