Beethoven, who referred to his ten sonatas as “piano-violin sonatas,” was a truly creative genius who was never willing to accept any limitations. His music, in every respect, hovers on the borderline between the “barely feasible” and the “impossible,” as it moves in such spiritual heights where the air is already quite thin for a “mere mortal.” At the same time, it is always crystal clear – like Bartók or Bach, Beethoven, too, draws exclusively from a “pure source.” In light of all this, it is no coincidence, then, that the performance of these works demands an extreme degree of preparation from the performer. For years, we have returned to these works time and again, as new layers and meanings reveal themselves to us each time. We feel that the full spectrum of human emotion resonates in these pieces: from the most delicate, fragile sighs and existential doubts all the way to monumental, almost heroic outbursts. The piano-violin sonatas are therefore worthy companions to the symphonies, thanks to Beethoven’s universal and unquestionable greatness. For us, this musical “journey” is always personal and unique. And although the technical characteristics of the violin and piano differ greatly, in these works the two instruments sound as equal partners – which presents the most exciting challenge for us.
