After our first album for Channel Classics: The Gentlemen of the Chapel Royal, with English Polyphony of the Renaissance, we now present ourselves in a completely different guise: on this Christmas album we give you a glimpse of our taste for the lighter styles. You will hear a wide selection of the personal favorites of our singers, such as Follow That Star, A Wonderful Christmastime, and Jingle Bell Rock. In addition to other popular Christmas Ballads from the American Songbook, such as Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and White Christmas, we have put a new spin on a couple of traditional carols, like Silent Night and Es ist ein Ros entsprungen. Most of the arrangements were written especially for The Gents, and the addition of instruments gives several of the pieces a completely different atmosphere, such as, for example, the opening number, Gaudete Christus est natus. At first it is as though you were listening to a track from our earlier album, with old English music, but gradually it changes with the addition of the marimbas, and finally it ends in a sparkling, swinging conclusion! a honey-rich tone, and overflowing with puppyish enthusiasm theyve certainly wagged my tail. What distinguishes this from so many similar efforts is the sheer variety and wit of the specially commissioned arrangements, which make use of some unexpected instrumental sonorities.

All the vocalists have extremely flexible voices, but the altos really soar to stratospheric heights. Masterful choir singing absolutely captivated and surrounded me in a multichannel wonder.

When you hear these 14 polished, stylistically savvy male singers, youll be taken in by the warm, vibrant sound, the fine blend, and by the nifty arrangements, most written specially for The Gents by Dutch arrangers. Channel Classics sound on this Hybrid Super Audio Cd is truly super, its full-featured dynamic range and clarity lending impressive realism to an unusual and well-produced program that easily stands out among the dozens of new Christmas recordings.
