Brahms: Symphony No. 1, Variations On A Theme By Haydn

Throughout this recording, Iván Fischer gives us a performance that is positively luminous. In the symphony, he brings clarity to Brahms' notoriously dense orchestration, while delivering a richness of colors that seems limitless. The detail provided by Fischer and his BFO players is immense but never fussy, the pacing and dynamics thrilling but never aggressive. The opening is powerful, but not monumental in the way of Klemperer. He maintains suppleness. And throughout the work he is able to hold the long beautiful lines without breaking, even while varying the tempo—a very impressive accomplishment. Overall, this is a performance full of personality, presented at the highest technical and interpretive level...

This performance may date from 2009, but the clear sonics achieved in Jared Sacks' pure DSD recording make the recording sound as fresh and alive as if it had been made this past year. Even more significant is the manner and clarity with which Jared captures the orchestra as a living, breathing whole, filled with inner detail and subtle dynamic shadings. Just an excellent recording.

Yet Fischer’s readings of the Tchaikovsky Symphonies are immense powerful and, strange to say of such familiar terrain, of the revelatory. Not surprisingly, all that is predictable about Fischer’s latest Brahms recording with The BFO is its combination of stunning excellence and originality. (…)
(…) Throughout this recording, Brahms’s orchestration, proverbially thick in the best circumstances and apt turn muddy in the worst, emerges with a patina that is positively luminous. (…)
(…) Lovers of orchestral music who grow pessimistic for the future of the art will find their faith restored by these wonderfully creative, vivid and refreshing interpretations. If further proof were required, they argue for Ivan Fischer’s place among the half-dozen most gifted and important conductor’ before the public today.

her's exceptional new Brahms First defies easy description (…)
(…) for anyone seeking an imaginative new performance, detailed yet never fussy, thrilling yet never aggressive, succulent but never slushy, this one is enthusiastically recommended.

Warmly played and interpreted without any distortion in the tempo (…)
(…) beautifully played hornsolo, as are the flutes that follows it and the trombones in their chorale.

one of Brahms’s Hungarian dances, arranged by Fischer for strings, a hesitating, melancholy delight; then the Brahms Variations on a Theme by Haydn, sparkling and strong.
(...) The fruits of this arrangement can be enjoyed only by playing the disc uninterrupted. Fischer’s rather schoolmasters plan is to reveal the influences and stepping stones that led to the master work: Hungarian folk music, plus classical poise allied to contrapuntal strength. But the CD never feels like homework. These Budapest players have Hungarian folk music in their blood, and their national inflections of phrasing, tempo and string fingering make the symphony quiver with new life. (...)
(...) All this plus the usual finesse of tone and colour expected from this orchestra and conductor. Nobody can top the natural sympathy and understanding shown in this outstanding performance.

Ever the radical, he effectively refashions each work from scratch. The Haydn variations have a grace and lightness of touch we don’t often hear in them. The first, meanwhile, is monumental in every sense of the word: a huge, noble assertion of the inherent dignity of human experience and creative endeavour that leaves you feeling enriched and exalted.
