It stands both as a multi-dimensional cultural and historical fable and as an environmental statement — with a breadth that envelops hope, beauty and nature’s untamed forces, beginning with the Arctic wind’s warning whisper, and ending with humankind’s inevitable apocalypse. This work makes one hopeful, anxious, fascinated, frightened and humble, and grateful for the Earth — irrespective of where one might live or be. La Terra Meravigliosa... "The Sound of the Arctic is the title chosen by the Arktisk Filharmoni for this new work the orchestra commissioned from me. The intention was that this work should mirror Norway’s northernmost regions, and it was to consist of compositions for different ensembles – a sinfonietta, a string orchestra, and a full symphony orchestra – which could be played separately or be fused into a single entity. The orchestra sent me to Svalbard on several occasions, the idea being to feed me with impressions of the Arctic environment. In this the orchestra succeeded completely. The impact of the nature was overwhelming, and acted as a major wake-up call to my relationship to the natural world. I decided to give the whole work a subtitle: La terra meravigliosa (“The Land of Marvels”). This subtitle links the work to three previous concertos – all with Italian titles – which represent a spiritual journey, a journey that in fact reaches its conclusion in a work for choir and orchestra which I composed after completing The Sound of the Arctic."
