Officia Nidrosiense - Gregorian chant from Nidaros
This album brings back to life one of Norway’s greatest medieval treasures. The manuscript MS Add. 47 was written for Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim between 1250 and 1275, and it survived the Reformation as binding for account books. Schola Sanctae Sunnivae, Norway’s national pilgrimage choir, sings chants for four feasts from the Liturgy of the Hours: St Olav (the national saint), the Exaltation of the Cross, Saints Peter and Paul, and Mary Magdalene. Their vocal style comes from the earliest written performance indications, and it gives this Europe’s oldest art music the vitality of a living tradition. Henning Sommerro’s Praeludes and Interludes add bells, percussion and violin that grow out of the chants’ own themes, giving the liturgy a timeless atmosphere.
It is the third and largest result of Anne Kleivset’s long project, working with Professor Eugeen Liven d’Abelardo, to reconstruct this manuscript, and it follows the Schola’s earlier albums for the Nativity of Mary and the Feast of the Blood Relic. With 66 tracks, it was recorded in Nidaros Cathedral by 2L’s Morten Lindberg in DXD 24-bit/352.8kHz. The immersive release is available in 2.0, 5.0, 7.0.4 Auro-3D and 7.0.6 Dolby Atmos formats, so the cathedral’s acoustic comes through as three-dimensional space.
