Ravel Abroad
Pierre Bleuse And The Odense Symphony Orchestra Take On Ravel’s Boldest Scores.
Spanish warmth meets Swiss precision in Ravel Abroad, a programme of four Ravel orchestral showpieces that reflect the composer’s dual heritage. A Swiss engineer’s son with a Spanish mother, Ravel combined a passion for mechanical perfection with deep feeling for Spanish music, and all four works balance the two. The album opens with the “fantastic and fatal whirl” of La Valse, a wildly unhinged tribute to the Viennese waltz. It continues with the colourful Rapsodie espagnole, from the velvet night of its Prélude to the festive explosion of the Feria. The jester’s guitar-strumming Alborada del gracioso, with its poignant bassoon solo, and a Boléro that builds from a single snare-drum rhythm to an overwhelming crescendo complete the programme.
Pierre Bleuse, Music Director of both the Ensemble intercontemporain and the Odense Symphony Orchestra, brings clarity, rhythmic vitality and refined colour to the scores, and the Danish orchestra responds with the articulation and flexibility the music demands. Recorded by OUR Recordings in the Carl Nielsen Concert Hall in Odense, the album presents Ravel in DXD, with a Decca Tree and spot microphones. It is a vivid, detailed account of the “orchestral laboratory” of a master craftsman.
