Beethoven: The Piano Trios, Vol. 3
The Busch Trio Continues Its Beethoven Journey.
Volume 3 of the Busch Trio’s complete Beethoven piano trios pairs the two Op. 70 trios with a lighter work. The “Ghost” Trio in D major takes its name from its eerie Largo, whose tremolos and sustained strings were sketched with Shakespeare’s witches (and the ghost in Hamlet) in mind, framed by concise and dramatic outer movements. The E flat Trio, Op. 70 No. 2, is among Beethoven’s most genial creations, with a warm Allegretto, a minuet-like third movement and an exuberant finale. The album closes with the ten variations on “Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu”, Op. 121a, a good-humoured set that moves from a long introduction to a sparkling Presto.
Mathieu van Bellen plays the Guadagnini “ex-Adolf Busch” violin (Turin, 1783), and the trio uses gut strings in homage to the great musicians of the early twentieth century that gave the group its name. Ori Epstein on cello and Omri Epstein on piano bring a close, conversational unity to the interplay. They record these works with joy and courage, which the booklet calls “an imperative to embody the revolutionary spirit” of Beethoven’s music. Recorded in April 2025 at Studio 4, Flagey, Brussels, this continues one of the most acclaimed chamber series on Alpha Classics.
