Bach: The Cello Suites · Guitar Transcriptions

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello, BWV 1007–1012, rank among the most celebrated and influential works in the history of Western music. Probably composed during Bach’s years in Köthen between 1717 and 1723, these extraordinary pieces represent a milestone in the evolution of instrumental writing. Through the apparent simplicity of a single melodic line, Bach creates an astonishing musical universe in which harmony, rhythm and counterpoint emerge with extraordinary clarity and expressive power. Structured around the traditional sequence of Baroque dance movements—Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, paired dances and Gigue—the six suites form a monumental cycle in which each work possesses its own character while contributing to a larger architectural design. Across the cycle, Bach explores an immense expressive range: from the luminous serenity of the First Suite and the introspective darkness of the Fifth to the radiant brilliance of the Sixth. Despite the technical limitations of a single melodic instrument, Bach’s writing suggests an entire polyphonic universe, revealing what many musicians have described as the “shorthand of God.” These works have inspired generations of performers across many instruments, and their adaptability has become part of their enduring legacy. In this recording, the legendary American guitarist Eliot Fisk presents his own transcriptions for modern classical guitar, the result of more than thirty years of deep engagement with this repertoire. His approach draws inspiration from Bach’s own tradition of transcription—most notably the composer’s remarkable lute adaptation of the Fifth Suite (BWV 995), which demonstrates Bach’s willingness to reshape his music for different instruments and sonic possibilities. Fisk’s transcriptions preserve the structural integrity and expressive depth of the original works while embracing the unique tonal palette of the guitar. Through carefully considered changes of register, expanded chordal textures and idiomatic guitar techniques, these performances illuminate new dimensions within Bach’s music. The guitar’s capacity for resonance, colour and intimacy offers a fresh perspective on the suites while maintaining a profound respect for their original spirit. Recorded at Gordon Hall in Watertown, Massachusetts, this album presents a deeply personal and thoughtful interpretation of one of the greatest cycles in the musical canon. In Eliot Fisk’s hands, Bach’s timeless masterpieces reveal new shades of beauty while reaffirming their enduring power to inspire performers and listeners alike.
