It was to study with the world's most famous comoser and to absorb some of the atmosphere of what was arguably the musical capital of the world. - 'to receive the spirit of Mozart from the hands of Haydn' as one friend back in Bonn put it. But it was as a virtuoso pianist that he first made his name.
