Shostakovich- Symphonies Nos 2 & 11
To everything, there is a time
Shostakovich wrote his Eleventh Symphony in 1957. Politically, this was the time of the Thaw in the Soviet Union: the Stalinist regime had been officially condemned and there was now more freedom for Russian society to offer hopeful acceptance to each new movement of creative and artistic expression. Some were perceived as major events, even if they had no substance, some were enveloped in an atmosphere of civic re-awakening (for example, Pasternak’s Dr Zhivago). Subsequently, the 1950s could be regarded as the completion of the ‘charismatic cycle’ in Russian culture, which had been forcibly interrupted by Stalinist ideologues.
