Musical Ode to Sublime Nature Vladimir Jurowski and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester continue their journey through the heights of German late-Romantic repertoire with a recording of Richard Strauss’s Eine Alpensinfonie. The Alpine Symphony was inspired by the composer’s experiences during a mountain trail, and is an audience favorite thanks to its picturesque, idyllic charm and powerfully evocative score. To Jurowski, the attraction of this piece lies not so much in the picturesque, but rather in Strauss’s Nietzschean embrace of living in the now and the transformative power of being in complete harmony with sublime nature. In that respect, this album shares a kinship with Jurowski’s previous recording of Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra also available at NativeDSD.

(...) The tension and release, the opulence of the long lines, bear testament to Jurowski’s truly great conducting (...) Having the label Pentatone in charge inspired confidence in advance to this present listener, and this indeed turns out to be the new benchmark for this work in sound; you have a seat at an ideal position from the orchestra in Berlin’s beautiful Konzerthaus, where two performance were given in February 2019.

(...) this live recording is one of the best recordings in the extensive discography of the “Alpensinfonie” (...) Critics and self-proclaimed classical music connoisseurs like to turn up their noses when they talk about Richard Strauss’s “Alpine Symphony”: too naive, too pompous, too kitschy. No way – Vladimir Jurowski and his Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin show in their live recording from 2019. With such precise workmanship, organically kept flowing and dynamically differentiated, the “Alpine Symphony” has nothing to do with the cliché of the widescreen film score. Rather, Jurwoski traces the philosophical thoughts about the unchangeable life cycle on which the monstrous score is based.
