Ivan Fischer surprend avec une inventivité unique qui offre du même coup une approche nouvelle de l’univers symphonique du maître de Bonn, même si son interprétation s’inscrit dans la continuité d’une certaine tradition. C’est véritablement passionnant de bout en bout et la prise de son aérée respecte parfaitement cette vision «ouverte» au souffle indéniable. Une réussite.

Chaque enregistrement d’Ivan Fischer et de son Budapest Festival Orchestra devient une cure de jouvence pour les œuvres enregistrées. C’est cette fois au Beethoven “léger” des 4e et 6e symphonies qu’est consacrée cette cure de rajeunissement. Très classique de ton mais implacable dans sa vigueur rythmique, la 4e va droit au but soutenue par de superbes interventions en clair obscur des bois. Quant à la Symphonie Pastorale, c’est tout l’orchestre qui y rugit avec une vitalité débordante, des sonorités coruscantes dans une sorte d’hédonisme de la nature qui fait chaud au coeur.

Het beste uit de grote filharmonische traditie met de (frisse impulsen van) de historische uitvoeringspraktijk verenigen: Ivan Fischer en zijn Budapest Festival Orchestra tonen op een overtuigende en hoogst aantrekkelijke manier aan dat het kan.

het meest opvallen de karakteristiek van Fischer’s Beethoven is de zorgvuldige afwerking van de klank, gekoppeld aan een soepele omgang met tempo.

één van de mooiste en interessantste orkesten van deze tijd. Dat komt in de eerst plaats door de Hongaars-Nederlandse dirigent die altijd weer blijft verrassen, welk repertoire hij ook onderhanden neemt en daarnaast de kwaliteit van de musici (...) Zelfs op moderne instrumenten geeft Fischer de noten een ongelooflijke frisheid. Kort en goed: aanbevolen.

in de Vierde een Adagio vol onopgesmukte poëzie geworden die rechtstreeks tot het hart spreekt, met die sublieme dialogen tussen strijkers en blazers die het hart doen smelten. In de hoekdelen staan alle neuzen perfect in dezelfde richting, alles staat echt 'recht onder elkaar', het is van het eerste tot het laatste akkoord spatgelijk, met een enorme ritmische drive die bijna dat gebaar van "wie doet mij wat." uitstraalt. Het is 'power play' van de goede soort, het soort jongensachtige stoerheid dat aanstekelijk werkt (…) De Zesde: het lijkt wel alsof Fischer er met zijn troepen eveneens middenin staat, zo overtuigend brengt hij dat unieke, in muziek gevatte landleven over het voetlicht. (…) Jared Sacks en Hein Dekker hebben er, in het kunstpaleis in Budapest weer erg veel werk van gemaakt en een mooie opname afgeleverd, de zoveelste op rij. Een aanrader, dit Beethoven-tweetal uit de stal van Fischer en zijn Budapest Festival Orchestra. Of dit een Beethoven-cyclus gaat worden? Welzeker!

een aantrekkelijk werk dat geen zwak moment kent. Iván Fischer en zijn Boedapest Festival Orkest weten wel raad met de compositie in een gedreven interpretatie die de eenvoudige melodie een grote klankschoonheid verleent. De grillige, burleske elementen in het Scherzo en de Finale zijn niet minder bevlogen gedoseerd. Fischer staat volkomen boven de stof. Daarna komt de Pastorale als een grote idylle tot leven, slechts onderbroken door het donderende geweld van het onweer, dat snel komt en even snel oplost in de verte. De dirigent zorgt voor uitgebalanceerde orkestgroepen en vooral in de doorwerking van het eerste deel voor verrassende contrapunten. De ontelbare opnamen van de symfonieën van Beethoven bewijzen dat geen enkele dirigent er een definitief laatste woord over kan zeggen. (…) deze nieuwe interpretatie van Iván Fischer behoort tot de beste van dit moment. Alle lof overigens voor de warme, mooie registratie.

Dirigent Iván Fischer behoort al jaren tot de wereldtop. (…) Fischer stoft deze overbekende muziek niet zomaar wat af, nee, zijn aanpak lijkt meer op een grondige restauratie.(…) Wat betreft de opnamekwaliteit zit Fischer bij Channel Classics op rozen. Al die fraaie details komen door de gebruikte superaudiotechniek uitstekend tot hun recht. Een juweel van een cd dus.

For the performance of the Sixth Symphony, Ivan Fischer changed the orchestra’s seating arrangement, moving the woodwind players among the strings, so that the individual soloists were always surrounded by the flow of Beethoven’s music. The results are spectacular, and the same seating arrangements were employed at the concert series in advance of this recording to much acclaim. (…) (…) this very well might be the best sounding disc of Beethoven (…) I give this disc five stars – it hits on all cylinders, and the performances are every bit the equal of the superb sound. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more emotionally involving, yet technically perfect performance. Very highly recommended sound.

Every new recording project from Ivan Fisher and his marvellous Budapest Festival Orchestra is the product of a combination of the conductor’s profound musicianship and his sense of adventure.(…) Fischer sees Symphony No.4 as a work about human feelings and moods, and he unfailingly communicates the joy and humour in Beethoven’s writing as well as the wonderful lyricism found in the slow movement. (…) In the ‘Pastoral’ Symphony Fischer’s tempi for each of the five movements are particularly well chosen to match the conductor’s carefully considered viewpoint of the work. The outer movements are genial and relaxed, the merrymaking (III) brilliantly bucolic and the storm (IV) suitably thunderous. (…) the wonderful orchestral playing is matched in artistry by the superb 5.0 high-resolution recording made by Jared Sacks and Hein Dekker.

If you haven't discovered the BFO, then may I strongly urge you to bolt to your nearest supplier, be that a record store or Amazon or ArkivMusic or iTunes or Passionato or anybody else who carries Channel Classics, a Rolls-Royce marque amongst record labels. In an era filled with uncertainty, the success of this young orchestra—and its stratospherically-high musical standards—is a delightful thing to behold. (…)

These are beautiful performances (…) This ‘Pastoral’ is magnificent, particularly in the first two movements. Fischer pays particular attention to details of string articulation, from the elegantly sculpted bass lines up. The result is amazingly transparent (the winds are positioned within the string section), fresh, and vital, but also rich-toned.(…) Fischer continues to sustain his reputation as one of the finest conductors around in any repertoire.

the bubbling energy are among the winning attributes of Fischer’s performances, with his Budapest Festival Orchestra. Plus a little presumption: ignoring the score, Fischer launches the sixth’s finale with a solo violin (…)

The strings are plumper than we've come to expect from recent Beethoven cycles but the Budapest Festival Orchestra can still deliver at the composer's original metronome markings. Conductor Iván Fischer only invokes fevered revolution at certain moments and elsewhere concentrates on well-argued phrases and a general sense of wonderment. Woodwind and brass detailing is excellent throughout, while the sublime close leaves you itching to hear Fischer's Seventh.

it gets better and better: there's a beautiful singing quality to the Adagio, and the neat, pointed performance of the last movement is all you could wish for.

These are among the finest recorded and perfpormed works I've ever heard (...) not to be missed and to be placed with your reference performances.

Comfy, well-upholstered, smpoothly played accounts of Beethoven’s sunniest, happiest symphonies. (...) Fischer’s accounts feel positively expansive. (...) clean, warm performances in probably the best high-resolution digital audio.(...)

In the performance of the Fourth Symphony, Fischer captures all of the variety of mood - mystery, melancholy, swagger, and humor - that this fascinating score can project. There is real joy in this music, and Fischer and his orchestra revel in it; (...) It is unusual, to say the least, to find a disc that sounds this fresh in repertoire this familiar, but Fischer and his Budapest band have a knack for doing just that.

This version has everything I ever wanted in a 'Pastorale', with some of the finest sound I have ever heard.(...)
